A new interview with DMC5 director Itsuno and producers Matt Walker and Michiteru Okabe is up on Dengeki Online, that contains some new tidbits of info.

Summary

- Devil May Cry 5 started development one year before DMC4SE's release, for a total of 4 years of development so far.

- RE Engine has turned into a specialized engine for making action games.

- There is a reason why Dante has a beard now, besides him just being older.

- With Nico they aimed to make a character that everyone will end up loving.

- They are being ambiguous about the nature and identity of the third playable character (V).

- V seemingly doesn't use weapons going by the key art. There will be a moment in the story where you will understand why that is.

- There is a reason why Nero shouts "Kyrie" in the trailer. They tease that something serious might've happened to her.

- The enemies in DMC5 are demons. A third force (ie. Heaven) won't appear. Again this is confirming what Itsuno said previously that there are only human and demon worlds in the DMC universe.

- The story reason for Devil Breakers breaking in the game is because Nico opts for performance rather than stability.

- With DMC5 the team wanted to make a pure action game. Mission structure from the earlier games is back, tho they mention that they have made some changes to it.

- Upgrade system uses Red Orbs similar to previous games. However there is a new tweak to this as well.

- DMC5 will be first and foremost Nero's story. That said, Dante and V will play important roles as well. Itsuno hopes the story will make the player get emotional and cry during the game.

- Production costs of clothing materials used for scanning was about as much as a small car.

Translations (so far)

Question: "Anything to highlight about Nico"

Itsuno: "Nico... well, what do you think? Nico is a character that was brought in to create Nero's Devil Breaker arm. With her we aimed for a character that everyone would come to like. Despite that there are highly individual opinions about her. But I think when you play the game, you will definitely end up loving her."

---

Q: "Who's the third person in the key art?"

I: "What is he? Well, he's definitely an important character. After Nero and Dante, he's the third playable character. There's a point to him seemingly not having any weapons. Keep it in mind, because if you do, there will be a moment in the full game where you go "that's what I thought!"

---

Q: "What happened to Kyrie, who debuted in DMC4?"

I: "In the trailer there's a scene where Nero shouts "Kyrie". However, whether or not anything happens to her... I can't say. But the fact Nero shouted her name does mean something serious happened."

---

Q: "Are we fighting demons again this time? "

I: "Yes. Like the ones you fought before, you're fighting demons from the demon world. There won't be anything like an entirely different third force. There are hints in the trailer about this as well."

---

Q: "How is the mission progression system?"

I: "I want the players to have a pure action game experience, so it is close to the traditional mission system. There are parts that are slightly different from before... that's something that you can look forward to."

---

Q: "Is there a character upgrade system?"

I: "There is. Like before, it uses Red Orbs. This system also has new tweaks made for this game."

They are however wrong about Nero's Blue Rose having different bullet types. Itsuno was talking about how the Blue Rose fires two bullets. This was seen in DMC4. However in DMC5 the two individual bullets have different, unique models, which are seen in the trailer.

Not surprised at all that DMCV is Nero's story first and foremost. If the series continues past this new entry, I think it's likely he'll continue to be the main protagonist moving forward.

Please don't fridge Kyrie.

Seriously. I know most fans hate her, but for the love of God, you don't have to fridge Kyrie to prove a point.

DMC5 will be first and foremost Nero's story. That said, Dante and V will play a big deep role in the story as well. Itsuno's goal with DMC5's story is to tell a very emotional tale. He hopes that player get emotional and crying during the game.
So how important is playing the older games for the story? I tried them recently but they feel really dated.

Traditional mission structure? Huh. Interesting choice. I thought for sure they'd go with an open world/metroidvania route. I like what I'm hearing, though.

p.s. supposedly the third character summons demons to do the fighting for him

I hope the mission structure doesn't adhere that closely to previous games. That's definitely the one downer for the game so far for me, never liked that in these games.

They aren't gonna fridge Kyrie people, Nero would be a sad sack of shit for the rest of the game if they did that, and going by the trailer he clearly isn't.

KYYYYYYYRIIEEEEEEEEE!!!!

I think she is still fine, but something dangerous happened (or almost) to her, otherwise Nero would be wrecked and he doesn't look sad or angry on the trailers.

unless he snapped, but i doubt it.

1) Longest dev time for a DMC game yet. Check.

2) Kyrie about to get fridged. Normally I am against type of stuff but Kyrie really is an awful character and the less talked about her in DMC5 the better. I want to see unleashed Nero.

3) Mission based structure returns with some changes. Pure action is good, none of this "action RPG" stuff in my DMC5. Unadulterated, uninterrupted action hype in my veins. I do hope that the content in between the combat is decent too.

4) So they are promising a major story reveal as to why the new guy doesnt use weapons.... interesting.

5) No heaven in DMC universe confirmed after the upteenth time.

6) Deep and involved emotional story... in a DMC game? And it will make me shed manly tears.????

7) Nico seems like a character that grows on you over time. She is alright with me. Also lol at performance over stability.

Wtf, why y'all want Kyrie to stay? She's the least interesting character in the series and doesn't have a great design either. Didn't know she had fans.

Also, yeah, didn't we figure out V doesn't need a weapon because he summons demons?

Expecting some time fuckery regarding Dante's beard, starting to think there could be a timeskip in the story.

I feel ambivalent about the mission structure returning. I definitely think keeping the basic score-attack nature of the series intact matters, but I feel like the chapter-based structure of the series has aged poorly (not a huge fan of it in DmC or Bayonetta either).

Dante with beard has to mean two things.

Either he is caught in some vortex of depression that he has stopped caring about personal hygeine.

Or he is returning from hell ala DMC2.

I hope its the latter so we can finally move past DMC2 once and for all.

You should play 3 & 4. 1 is solid, but it aged the most of the good DMC games, so it's ultimately up to you. DMC2......just read a summary of that game's story. The story order is 3 -> 1 -> 4 -> 2. DMC5 is definitely after 4, but if it's after 2 in the timeline is still up for debate (although it is very likely that DMC5 is post-2).
