Look at all the 1-star feedback mentioning PS4. Mine lasted 18 months. Last night it suddenly stopped working while I was using my PS4 Pro, without any prior warning. The screen just froze, and that was it.
Upon restarting the console, I got error CE-32335-8, which means that the system storage can't be accessed.
I put the drive in a USB enclosure to test it, and it won't even spin up again. I suppose its controller has died.
Thankfully I have some backups, but unfortunately not everything.

Seagate has 5 years of warranty, so I will be getting a free replacement, but my non-backed up data (such as videos created during the past 1 1/2 years) is gone.

The lessen here: If you are a PS Plus subscriber, use automatic cloud storage uploading for saving (I always did it manually because I was afraid of running out of space - originally Sony gave you only 1GB of cloud space but it has since been increased to 10GB; there is no reason not to do it automatically now). If you don't have PS Plus, use a USB stick and occasionally back up your saves.

The other lesson is, don't trust Seagate. I never use Seagate drives for really important data (Western Digital RAID is the way to go).

I was too impatient waiting for mine to show up after the release of the Pro as it was sold out everywhere in the UK that I just ordered another 2tb drive and cancelled the order. Pretty pleased now, that must really suck

I have a Seagate Barracuda Pro for my games and file storage on my computer, so I am not hoping for anything like that. I am sorry for your scenario, though.

Yup, it happened to me too, except that mine died just after a few months of use. Even though I've heard that Seagate HDDs are unreliable, I ended up buying it anyway during a sale after reading some positive reviews. Ah well... :/

I've had Seagates and WD drives fail on me in various systems over the years

Never a Toshiba, but I haven't had as many

Hmm, got the same drive in my ps4 pro. I did experience an issue with corrupted data a few months ago but I think it was my own fault related to cutting power at a bad moment. I had to wipe the drive and start over, and it's been fine ever since. Other than that I've been happy with this product

I bought the previous generation model with my OG PS4 and it is still running fine in my Pro all those years later.

here
hmm, aren't Seagates in general not very reliable?

I think I remember hearing that but that was a while ago so I dunno if that's still the case

Honestly a game console is kind of the ideal use for a cheap, semi-reliable drive. Saves to the cloud and games can be reinstalled = who gives a fuck? I love recording game clips as well, but ultimately that's another who gives a fuck piece of data. Though with the auto-upload on Xbox and a powershell script I can easily back up all my Xbox clips. Not sure if there's anything quite as quick on PS4, maybe a dedicated YouTube account?

I got Seagate 4TB portable hardware. So far so good considering the amount of times my Pro has been switched off from the mains (Thanks mum).

I think you'll find most storage manufacturers held in equally low regard if you spend time searching for which is the most reliable, because they all inevitably have failures.

I've used Seagate drives since the dawn of time and never had any problems, but then you'll find someone who has had several fail during that time.

PS4 has a nice feature that allows you to back up ALL saves at once to USB. There is no reason not to use it occasionally ;)

Is your console turned off when you don't use it? Completely turned off, not power savings mode. Because otherwise the HDDs run 24/7 and are not built for that, you need server grade HDDs for that.

My friend has the same drive, No issues in the 8 months he has had it installed. I only have 3 or 4 big games installed at once so I went with a 525GB SSD.

The Firecuda has a 5 year factory warranty so Seagate is pretty confident in the drive

and the latest Backblaze stats show pretty good number for Seagate

Yes, and I didn't use background downloads, either. Be that as it may, PS4 does NOT use its hdd 24/7 while suspend is on (orange light); it is completely off.

Seagate has been great for me! Many years without issues. I don't think you can rely on what you hear from anyone. Luck of the draw.

Seagate was already trash around 2005, i worked in a computer store and we had many Barracudas that failed. Go with Western Digital if you have the option.

Maybe yours will be just fine, obviously Seagate Firecuda doesn't have a 100% failure rate, otherwise there'd be a class action suit against Seagate already, like for their 3TB drives (allegedly 30% failure rate): https://www.pcworld.com/article/302...on-lawsuit-over-hard-drive-failure-rates.html

Just back up your saves to USB every once in a while, or use automatic uploading to the cloud if you have PS Plus.

Why are people still buying Seagate products? Their hard drives have always had relatively high failure rates in comparison to other brands, so you're really shooting dice with their discs. HGST drive failures are nearly unheard of in comparison, and tend to perform better as well.

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-for-2017/

Don't buy Seagate drives, ever. If shopping for HDD's, go Western Digital or HGST, (which incidentally I believe is owned by Western Digital now), and for SSD's go Samsung or Sandisk.

There was no alternative to Segate's Firecuda 2TB SSHD for PS4 when I bought it last year; I never buy Seagate for data storage. Are there any similar drives by other makers?

If that were the case it could not download stuff in the background.

It spins the drive the drive up when it's downloading something etc then the drive stops spinning until another download starts/you power the console on. Same as the Xbox. Having it spin 24/7 would have no benefit and would be really silly.

Of course it is in energy savings mode and doesn't spin, but it's still on, just in a low power state.

Oof, my mistake, didn't see that you were specifically referring to a solid state hybrid drive. Unfortunately, the only 3.5 inch solid state hybrid I know of with two terabytes is the Firecuda. That being said, while I definitely empathize with your need for plenty of data, (I use three terabytes of storage currently and it's almost all full), I still recommend not going with Seagate drives in general. I opted for an HGST 7200 rpm 1tb for my internal and a supplementary 2tb WD external for the purposes of reliability, and honestly I'm very happy with my decision. I know SSHD's are going to be a good bit faster than traditional platters, particularly for games that you play often what with the additional flash cache, but reliability is always my primary concern. It does seem like there aren't many companies that are still interested in making SSHD's now though, as most have just gone full SSD in terms of production priorities. Maybe as SSD prices are dropping a bit as of late, you could just eventually get a 2tb SSD? That's what I'm eventually wanting to move up to for my PC, but I'm still waiting for prices to drop a bit more, and I've been waiting for some time lol.

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-for-2017/

The story behind the story:
As we've noted in the past, Backblaze's data may not represent the average consumer experience. The company puts its drives through rigorous use, which may in turn put greater wear on drives that are designed to spin down and save power when they're not needed. That's not to say Seagate isn't at fault, but the case isn't so cut-and-dry given the many variables that can factor into hard drive failure.

Drive failures suck, but I can't imagine taking the Backblaze server failure rate of 3.5", multi-disc drives as something to condemn a low-impact consumer product like a 2.5" SSHD. Given how a negative review is far more likely to be written than a positive one on a hard drive (it works or it doesn't) I probably wouldn't shop for confirmation bias on Newegg either. Honestly, all of the brands have their black eye. HGST is the child of the Deathstar (Deskstar) era, and you basically saw them in OEM for a long time because of the IBM damage. WD now owns them, which muddies the water more, and Samsung's HDD division is owned by Seagate.

I think it's absolutely possible they had a bad production run, and if that swears you off to a different manufacturer, it makes sense. But pretty much the only sure-fire brand killer I have ever seen - where the failure rate was enough to warn an entire consumer base - is the IBM Deskstar. Seagate is just another brand to me. Lots of drives and only anecdotal failure evidence.

It's not really 'running 24/7' if it's not spinning though. You don't need a server grade HDD to use power saving mode/standby downloads in consoles.

Sure, but by the time SSD becomes as affordable, we'll all be playing PS5 (hopefully).

It's not 24/7 but it does access it regularly and even more so when downloading updating during rest mode.

In general no electronic device should be on standby continously for long periods of time unoess it's built for it. It sucks electricity and not good for longevity.

Seagate isn't as bad as everyone thinks. They had a real stinker model for a year and now they get that rep. Check the backblaze stats if you don't believe me.

Drives die - it's a fact of life and why backups are important for anything you care about.

Glad to hear that ypuyou getting a replacement under warranty OP.

Mine's been running fine, but I don't run my games on it anymore, I've transferred everything to an external HDD.

18 months is a bit quick though. Three+ years, sure, but at 18 months in a device that probably hasn't been moved once that's quick. Especially since it has a 5 year warranty. Seagate didn't plunk that long of a warranty on it expecting to have to replace them so soon.
