Hey all. Just caught up with Grand Blue, which was really good. Saw the recommendation in the One Piece OT but thought to come here to ask for other comedy recs.

Thinking about it, I think I can count the number of mangas I've read with a college setting in one hand. Any other good comedy manga set in a college?

soma 274 - So I guess Soma is going to lose this, then the arc is him getting revenge or something? I dunno. I mean if he wins then what else could happen?

Re: Soma

I wonder if they'd do something unexpected like a draw or Erina being the judge and "rigging" the win for Soma (which leads to a split between the 2 and Soma prepping for a rematch anyway)

Nah, he'll straight up lose and the cycle repeats.

The Promised Neverland Vol. 5

I can't believe this series is still consistently blowing me away each new volume. Hell, every single chapter I finish has me wanting more. Definitely interested to see what sort of directions it goes from this point since the demons are a bigger presence than ever before now.

As an aside, I also ended up getting A Girl on the Shore with this small haul from Righstuf along with vol. 2 of Dead Dead Demon, I've been really enjoying what I've seen of Asano's more "recent" works (although found his earlier stuff to be a bit too mundane). A friend of mine mentioned he got it and while he thought it was good, he threw it away just because he didn't want to risk anyone ever actually seeing some of the content. I did a quick flip through myself and... hoo boy, yeah that's something alright.

Last MHA was good stuff. I always liked the inheritance part of Avatar and Reborn, so this is pretty neat. Plus I think it gives the manga a bit more bite to last longer.

Wonder if it would still run when OP is done.

Horikoshi said that he wanted to finish it in 30 volumes, but now it is impossible, so I guesse we still have 2 years at least, I guess we are near the half of the story so probably 4 or 5 years to go that would make it end at the same time I expect OP to end.

I'm pretty sure Jump will be very upset if both OP and MHA end within the same year.

I realize (based on reading the threads for a while) that this may be out of place, but here goes:

I've been watching Good Morning Call on Netflix. The inexplicable swearing in the subtitles means I won't show my daughter the show, but I think it's something that she would like, so I was looking for the manga and... it's not translated/licensed. She's been reading shonen stuff for some time mainly because that's what I like, but I thought I'd ask for recommendations on shoujo (non smut) that's actually licensed here. We have the Clamp stuff from DH (which is mainly crossover stuff) and I did pick up some of the Disney line from Tokyopop.

More than happy to get a list of recommendations done, just one question though. I know you obviously want to avoid swearing and smut, but is there anything else that you'd rather it not include?

Jul 2018 Recommendation: Futsutsuka Mono no Ani Desu ga (My Brother the Shut-in)

uBNE2LV.jpg

Slice of life dramedy | 6 volumes, Complete work, Licensed in English by Kodansha

Every family has its share of problems, be they big or small. Shino Tadokoro has the perfect high school life, full of romance and friendship. Her biggest problem is her shut-in brother Tamotsu. She stubbornly keeps his existence a secret, telling even her closest friends that she is an only child. Completely oblivious to Shino's concerns, Tamotsu suddenly declares that he is giving up the shut-in lifestyle. Is there still time? The curtain rises on a tale of family reconstruction! (source)

From iCham:
The premise is really just a pretense to launch the story, as you could think the whole "OMG my NEET brother is coming out he's going to ruin my life" shtick would be the main source of story/comedy of the manga. (source)

They both end on the same day, the one year anniversary of Soma finally ending. Also happening on that day, Promised Neverland goes on an indefinite hiatus. With only Black Clover to keep it afloat, the president of Jump just sets the Jump offices on fire and flees into the country. It's been a good run, folks.

With all the different writers and artists being allowed to add to the current Star Wars canon, you think a Mangaka will ever get to do anything with it?

The "112,049" moment was pretty good.

Still don't know what we are going for with this arc/Bon, but it is at least a bit more interesting now.

Orient 1-8
Did it take Magi a little while to pick up? Liked the art of the big monster fight that most of these chapters cover. Unfortunately there is nothing compelling about the characters, especially musashi, so far. Will stick with it for a little bit longer.

Basically how I feel as well.
It looks so rad though.

It's an awful rule, but usually, if the main character looks too much like some popular character in the previous manga, I just assume it'll be meh. It's not a hard rule, but I've found it more true than not. And boy does what's his face from Orient just look like a 50/50 mix of Aladdin and Sinbad.

New manga called Blue Rock. Japan gets knocked out from 2018 World Cup and then they start scouting high schoolers to represent Japan in 2022 World Cup.

Anyone got any good romance recommendations? I've been in the mood for something cutesy and vapid. I don't mind Shojo's and I already plan on reading through Aoi no Flag.

Please Don't Bully Me Nagatoro! chp 18 and 19 Them playing video games was cute. And also I had a really similar experience with girls asking if I touched boobs in HS. It also went poorly. I really dig this but god do I wish there was a legit love triangle so we could get more of her jealous face. but noooooo! No one ever wants more love traingles but me!

We Never Learn Speaking of cute faces I now remember why I read this. The cute faces. Speaking of which....

Kaguya

Bonnouji Ch1 - 5 I tried to give this a read but I thought their initial meeting was so dumb, inconsequential, unrealistic, and forced that I just could get past it despite my enjoyment about them both being adults and her just getting out of a relationship. Lots of little things I should like but it never comes together for me.

Mainly stuff that would be suitable for a young girl (my daughter), so maybe no boys love gender bending or stuff like that or at least not where that's the main focus. Thanks for responding btw.

Reading the manga for Good Morning Call, I swear they made Uehara a lot less likable in the tv adaptation, which seems like an odd thing to do. Like in the show he basically never smiles and even my wife wonders what's attractive about him. I'm not sure if that was intentional or if Kamen Rider Wizard is just a terrible actor or something.

Cool!

My, and my partners, personal favorites:
- The Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts [Niehime to Kemono no Ou] (If you don't mind a little bit of violence/fighting)
- Yona Of The Dawn [Akatsuki No Yona] (If you don't mind a fair bit of violence/fighting)
- The Worst Witch in the World [Sekai de Ichiban Warui Majo] (Sadly this one isn't licensed, but it's cute and fluffy, and nice.)
- Palace Meidi (Not sure if this one is licensed, but if it is it's probably perfect for what you're looking for)

The classics:
- Glass Mask [Glass no Kamen ] (Again, not licensed)
- Rose Of Versailles [Versailles No Bara] (Set in the French revolution, also includes a little bit of cross-dressing, as the main character has been forced to live as her father's heir)
- Boys Over Flowers [Hana yori Dango] (Very standard shoujo set-up: several rich boys bully the girl they like)
- Ouran High School Host Club [Ouran Koukou Host Bu]
(Another classic, the anime's pretty great too)
- Fruits Basket (I haven't personally read this one, but I hear it recommended a lot!)
- Cardcaptor Sakura (THE classic late-90's Shoujo manga, but I'm guessing you've possibly got this as you talked about having stuff by CLAMP)

Gintama 693
Uho

Kimetsu no Yaiba 120
I guess giving him a relatively sad backstory and making him a troll to the opponents was indeed enough to get me to like Tokito

Cells at Work Black 3

This is fucked up in some mental way. I mean, I know exactly where "those" are heading, though. But still...

Cells at Work Black 4

That "gonococcus" things are really something else.

It seems Jump is off this upcoming week. Do the other publishers are off too?
Should be or soon be.
As for jump it is possible it will leak early, it happen often after a double issue so there is a chance it will come out this week rather than next week. If that happen the break will be the week after.

A Cruel God Reigns 14

Jesus Christ Ian, you are clueless.

This has been... extremely uncomfortable to read. Though at times it sorta goes a bit overboard to the point it starts to feel a bit silly, but other than that Hagio Moto is doing a pretty good job at making my skin crawl. Hopefully it doesn't turn into suffering porn (I mean, it kinda is already, but it's also an 80 chapters long manga...)

Well with a little help from insomnia I read Shin Devilman and began Kitaro tonight.

Let's be honest, while the original Devilman can surely be considered historic, Shin is globally a wet fart.

As for Kitaro, I wasn't sold on it at first, idk, my suspension of disbelief was roughed up with some characterizations or odd choices from characters, even the cohesion of the world seems iffy. But then I gave up and let myself be gently charmed by this macabre story. It's completely bonkers.

The Promised Neverland

Holy shit, was not expecting a black ops gank squad to come after them this early. Thought it would be later before the human antagonists got involved directly.

Was litrally hot. Though I wonder if that is really how Ice Hockey is. I do hope Akira Amano (best) makes it to a full series, would be so fun.

Loved the mix of the typical raise son as the next successor to the temple/dojo of sorts...is actually to be the next king of the ice.

Sports are always a good genre, whether it focuses on girls or boys.

Aim for the Ace pretty much set it off for shoujo manga.

Thanks for the recommendations! I have the Fruits Baskets dvds somewhere in a pile (along with Kare Kano) so maybe I'll pick up one of those volumes. I do have the original volumes of CCS, but I think I remember the anime being more fleshed out than the manga (similar to Angelic Layer) though it's been a while... my daughter is working her way through the CCS Blu-rays though.

Another manga/anime I forgot to mention was Ancient Magus' Bride [Mahoutsukai No Yome] which is probably in my top three fantasy series of all time (the anime is pretty great too). It deals with loads of Witch and Magus stuff in rural England. And for the most part, is quite happy and jolly. Though it isn't without its own dramatic twists and turns (some of which may be (read: definitely are) a little dark for her now). But it could be a series you keep an eye on to get her in the future.

Though I wonder if that is really how Ice Hockey is.

I only took a quick skim of that ice hockey one shot, but unless someone starts throwing punches at the other in the middle of the game as the crowd, players, and referee cheer for blood, it's not a realistic depiction of ice hockey.

Looks like Seven Deadly Sins will end next summer.

I can see that with how things have been creeping to a climax. Neat. It was a fun ride. Don't get me wrong, lots of problematic elements but I think this is one of the better shonen action manga to come out. Hoping it sticks the landing, and for someone to burn the inevitable epilogue chapter filled that's sure to be filled with all those creepy problematic bits.

Still enjoying this backstory arc, only problem is again, for a monthly series feels like weve been in backstory all year, when its only been like 4 chapters :(

The highlight of each month is seeing YuuMika and getting Mika sucking Yuu in the back of the van then them back to back for some awesome action scenes, I see you asuramaru powering up Yuu in miraculous ways.

Also the comedy was great, best Mika face (and also him defending Yuu).
