Glad to see this thread up within 24 hours! Was gonna have to have a word with Morrigan otherwise ;)

Seeing Dying Fetus next week. Never really been into them but loved what I've heard from their recent album so figured I'd go see them live!

So, I started metal recently and Blind Guardian is still the legit no.1 power metal band. Anything similar? I've tried Helloween but, eeeehhhh.I liked Rhapsody (of Fire) - Dawn of Victory
Speaking of that I got into DIO. Dude has a fucking awesome voice.

Anyone who speaks well of Dio is a friend of mine.

Blind Guardian to me are still the absolute masters of the genre. If you want something that sounds like them I recommend 3 bands. Persuader are a kick ass, riffy power metal band with a singer that sounds a shitload like Hansi. Savage Circus is (was) members of Persuader that hooked up with former Blind Guardian drummer Thomen Stauch. Orden Ogan play power metal tinged with folk elements with a shitload of layered vocals not unlike BG. Sorry, can't imbed the Orden Ogan song, but give it a shot!

Somebody say power metal?!

Angra
Hibria
Iced Earth (Barlow or GTFO)
Manticora
Symphony X
Gamma Ray
Edguy
Rage
Avantasia
Outworld
Dark Moor
Lost Horizon
Nightwish
Epica
Wuthering Heights
Sabaton
At Vance
Theocracy
Iron Mask
Kamelot
Dragonland

Those are some of my faves other than the ones listed above me. If you like the big band orchestral elements of later BG, I definitely recommend Epica and Avantasia.

Oh sweet, a metal thread!

The wrestling thread had a prompt for top 5, so I figure I'd post my top 5 Metal bands currently:
1. Opeth
2. Between The Buried And Me
3. Mastodon
4. Witchcraft
5. Tool

So I really love prog and doom/sludge metal.

Anyone have recommendations for bands that would be similar to Witchcraft, Sabbath, or Truckfighters? I've been really digging doom/sludge/psychedelic stuff lately and trying to find more. I tried The Sword based on Spotify recs but I couldn't get into them.

Here are a tonne of recommendations:

Asteroid
Graveyard
Kadavar
Mars Red Sky
Slomatics
Sons of Otis
Stoned Jesus
Church of Misery
Colour Haze
Cathedral
Weedeater
Saint Vitus
Pentagram
Elephant Tree
Blood Farmers
Yawning Man
Electric Wizard
Bongzilla
Lowrider
Monolord
Ogre
Sleep
Elder
Orange Goblin
Windhand
Dopethrone
Fu Manchu
All Them Witches
Kyuss
Radio Moscow
Valley of the Sun

Hell yeah, thanks! I'm gonna take a look at all the suggestions you guys have given me this weekend.

Also, how fuckin rad is the notification for when you've been quoted? It's a tiny thing, but a huge convenience

I'm sitting here reviewing a movie for the Halloween marathon so I thought I'd kick on something in my new tunes playlist. Which ended up being this magnificent piece by Cormorant. I've listened to it a few times but late at night the mellow jams just feel good after a long day.

https://cormorant.bandcamp.com/album/diaspora

The cover art is amazing too.

I've never listened to them before, but this is really good. Just snagged their entire discography on Apple Music. Thanks for sharing!

Autopsy released the title track off their new mini-LP which comes out 12/15. The track is a bit more Motorhead-esqe than their usual death/doom work and looks like its at least in a bit part of an homage to the old US band named Bloodbath which inspired a lot of Autopsy's original work.

Marking 30 years of depravity, the highly influential US death metal pioneers return with the Puncturing the Grotesque mini-LP, containing 7 tracks of blistering sickness, and their first new material since the pulverising Skull Grinder, on 15th December 2017 exclusively through the Peaceville store.
With the returning line-up of Chris Reifert, Eric Cutler, Danny Coralles & Joe Trevisano, Autopsy once more deliver a rancid concoction of slow brooding doom and high-octane metal madness injected with twisted solos and an overdose of vocal insanity.
Puncturing The Grotesque features a high-octane version of the none-too-subtly titled 'Fuck You!!!', originally known from 80's West Oakland act Bloodbath (which once featured current guitarist Danny Coralles). Bloodbath US was a large inspiration for Autopsy in their formative years.
Recorded at Earhammer Studios (Violation Wound), in Oakland CA with engineering & co-production duties carried out by Greg Wilkinson. With the delightfully distasteful artwork comes courtesy of Dennis Dread (Darkthrone/Abscess).

With Morrigan now being a mod will I get banned for saying that Modern Metal is better than the classics? :P
<3

In other news, I think I need to listen to the new Ne Obliviscaris album a couple more times, not sure how good it actually is yet. It has been uploaded to youtube, btw.

Gotta say Eluveitie's replacement for Anna Murphy is pretty good now that you can also hear her on a metal track with their new single Rebirth

She has a different style compared to Anna. A Rose For Epona for example just sounds better with Anna's vocals. But on a technical level, with songs written to her voice, I'd say she is better than Anna ever was.

By latest you mean Evocation 2 i assume? Their second acoustic album. Wasn't the biggest fan either. Rebirth just got released today have not seen any reviews but i like it.

I didn't even know it existed until just now, but having just had a listen I really like it too, and I do think the new singers vocals work quite well for me on it.

Hey, thread back. I can lurk again!

I could never get into The Sword either, fwiw. Their latest album is more straight rock, anyway. Anyway, here are my favorites in the psych/doom kind of variety.

Elder is just awesome
Fuzz is very fuzzed out garage-style psych rock with a strong dose of metal
Colour Haze is very instrumental, very psych, and very awesome. Probably my favorite band right now. Early stuff is probably more up your alley.
Samsara Blues Experiment a louder and more metal version of Colour Haze, lol
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats emulates Black Sabbath. Doomy.

Of course, if you haven't listened to the heavy-hitters like Kyuss or Sleep, do so immediately.

And for not strictly metal...
All Them Witches is the best psych band in the game right now, imo.
King Buffalo is a decent, albeit straightforward psych act
The Heavy Eyes is good straight hard rock/heavy metal, but I prefer their earlier stuff
Kadavar is very much stoner, sounds kind of like early Sabbath
Yawning Man is more early desert rock kind of stuff, mellow Truckfighters, I'd describe them. Mostly instrumental

I don't mind being the resident psych/stoner guy lol. I love the genre so damn much.

Jon Rossi from Pilgrim apparently passed away last night. Hearing through the grapevine that it might have been an heroin/opioid OD. :(

RIP

The new Ne Obliviscaris is good. It's probably great, but right now it's just good. Doesn't flow as well as their last 2 pieces of absolute perfection, and just doesn't seem to have as many stand out moments. But then this is off the back of 2 bonefide masterpieces, so it was maybe always destined to fall behind.

Ok, I just gave the new Eluveitie song (youtube link) the first proper listen. I really really like it. Is it just me or does it feel more like a successor to Slania than to Origins? I don't know, it just gives me the vibes somehow...

Also I'm actually surprised the new singer does screams. For some reason I did not expect that at all. I know Anna did but she had years of experience. That makes Fabienne(?) even more amazing.

Yeah! I like it quite a bit but haven't gotten into as much as some of their other albums. But, "All" took some time too, and now it's probably my favorite of theirs.

What about you?
All is also my favourite! Well, either that or Los Sounds.

I like the new one a lot, especially compared to their last one, which I thought was a bit weak by their standards.

Ay, glad this is up. I thought I knew metal, but after reading the other places thread I was proven wrong.

Anyway... the new enslaved is legit. I should say that's the only enslaved I've ever heard, but I like it.

Whoracle turns 20 today.
Of which the band's probably spent the last 10 years pretending the album doesn't even exist. Atleast judging by their setlists. Talk about material going to waste.

Oh well, I've made my peace with the fact that band's never going to put out anything worth my while ever again :|

Some of my favourite albuns of the year so far:

The Ruins of Beverast - Exuvia - https://theruinsofbeverast.bandcamp.com/album/exuvia
Dødsengel - Interequinox - https://dmp666.bandcamp.com/album/interequinox
Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon - https://profoundlorerecords.bandcamp.com/album/infrared-horizon
Animo Aeger - Ab-Fakt - https://animoaeger.bandcamp.com/releases

Currently listening to Katla - Móðurástin - https://katlaiceland.bandcamp.com/album/m-ur-stin
Katla is an Icelandic band featuring ex-Sólstafir drummer and visual artist Guðmundur Óli Pálmason and singer/multi-instrumentalist Einar Thorberg Guðmundsson (Fortíð, Potentiam). Named in tribute to one of Iceland's greatest active volcanos, Katla creates powerful, panoramic music where shimmering guitars, crushing melodies and atmospheric density meet dark, entrancing power.

Still have lots of catching up to do, new Blut Aus Nord is out, and new EP from Arkhon Infaustus too...

God damn, it makes me sad to think of the state IF have been in for like 15 years...

I'm one of the weirdos I guess that loves all eras of ain't Flames. From first to last they're all great... well except maybe A Sense of Purpose. I was hopelessly addicted to their newest one last year, too. But I can see why others might not like the change.

I'm not a fan but metal elitism is the worst so feel free to talk about it as much as you want here and Don't care what others say. Metal is metal, even if it's bad (jk)

Well I think part of the issue is that hardcore and metalcore arguably aren't "metal" in the sense that they sprung from punk. It's technically different.

Personally I think they're close enough to talk about here, though.

I know but it's gotten to a point where it doesn't really matter. A lot of hardcore stopped sounding punk ages ago. Crust, dbeat, power-violence, grindcore, are probably my favorite metal genres and , even though they all come from hardcore punk, they're more metal than all these symphonic metal bands, for example.

I'm ok with Metalcore/Hardcore if you're all ok with the occasional mention of heavy rock/psychedelia/proto metal.
