how come these sales were never listed in Nintendo's sales reports? was this game counted for SEGA instead?

The man rocks. Loved his games for such a long time and the Yakuza series just keeps going from strength to strength. I cannot wait until TGS next month as I have a good feeling we'll be seeing more of Shin RGG and Ichiban.

This shit just makes me sad that F-Zero still doesn't have a new game for whatever reason.

GX is still the king of the genre.

I'd say maybe he's including AX sales figures... but the number of units of those made was prolly only ever in the 100's.

GX did get a Players Choice re-release in NA which is pretty odd. Anyone know what the requirements were to achieve the Players Choice label back then?
I thought the rule was specific games that were over million sellers.

1.5 million?? Wth someone should've made one for the Wii. I remember Miyamoto making some excuse for not making one during that era.

As much as I love the guy, sometimes things are just good as they are and don't need to be super innovative all the time. At this point I'd even just be happy with F-Zero GX remastered with online play, I'm worried what they might try and turn it into.

Agree 100%. I've seen the bolded countless times in fan requests over the years. It needs to happen. It'll sell if Nintendo bothers to market it as well as their other Switch games and offer free online multiplayer promos like they did with Splatoon 2 and ARMS.

I thought the rule was specific games that were over million sellers.

From the F-Zero GX article on Wikipedia:

"[F-Zero GX] became qualified for the Player's Choice line in both Europe[81] and North America[82]by selling at least 250,000 copies."

The minimum requirement for Players Choice was 250,000.

The guy is pals with Sion Sono. I'm jealous of him.

... He has also put out a lot of great videogames.

Honestly if they do GX again just with more cars, tracks, features, online, etc. I wouldn't complain one bit. Awesome game.

Interesting on the GX sales numbers.

Seriously though, I want a new Monkey Ball so badly.

So F-Zero GX was Nagoshi's best selling game? Super Monkey Ball also did over 1m globally so that'd be his second best seller I assume. Interesting that he hit these sales heights on Gamecube and wasn't able to replicate them on far more successful platforms like PS2, DS, PSP, Wii, 360, PS3, 3DS or PS4.
Given the recent "roughly 1:1" quote on Yakuza sales row vs domestic plus the recent PC port Yakuza 0 is probably over a million by now.

Actually scratch that. How about F-Zero ga Gotoku instead? Play as Captain Falcon on the streets of Mute City. The actual F-Zero game will exist as well but it'll be supplemented by a fairly lengthy single player story involving Captain Falcon voiced by the VA of Kazuma Kiryu.

Sure would be nice if him and his team could make some non-Yakuza games/reskins. Feels like its been far to long since they stretched their arcade legs. AV was also behind the real good Shining Force remake on GBA. I know they did Binary Domain but thats over 6 years ago~ c'mon Segac fund 'em for something fresh!

The minimum requirement for Players Choice was 250,000.
Ohh well it safely hit that at rock bottom prices or otherwise thats for sure so I guess its not so odd it got such a re-release.

Iirc, they're working on a new IP, so you'll get your wish.

Sato has said they're not really interested in the switch as a platform as of this time. Not really surprising considering I'm pretty sure they're done with the 5 engine and have fully moved over to the Dragon Engine.

They're really too damned busy ATM anyways to really do anything like that I would think. They have all the PS4 ports coming out, the new IP, Yakuza Online, and Shin all on the horizon. In the last year they've already put out three games (Fist, K2, and Y3 PS4) and may end up releasing even more once TGS shakes out.

So what's Nintendo's excuse for no new F-Zero then?!?

It never appeared on Nintendo numbers and with 1 million, it should appear. Beyond that, the games that came later had bad results and no new idea came to the series internally until they tried to make it externally by offering it to Criterion.

I don't know if someone tried to do that again after that since we don't have the information but who knows.

Can't help but think that there might be a typo or mistranslation there.

Circumstantial evidence never hinted that GX was a million seller, let alone a million and half.

Okay, somewhat off topic, but in relation to Sammy buying out Sega that was mentioned above...

Around 2004 or so, Sega opted to buy majority in shares of TMS Entertainment, and essentially made them a subsidiary of their company. Then we later find out reports that Sega was in financial straits, and the Sammy buy out happened. Did Sega perhaps overspend on the TMS purchase that that partially contributed to their financial situation? The way things played out around this point was always an odd thing for me.

I hope someone will be able to put up the full interview sometime as there's no way I can get the Edge Magazine where I live.

I was considering single platform, Monkey Ball 1 and F-Zero _X are on more than just Gamecube too, but yes multiplatform it's possible Y0 has passed a million. Y1-2 probably have too if you count the HD Remaster (not Kiwami).

Looking at those NPD figures though the first Wii Monkey Ball is definitely past a million too globally, and the DS one could potentially be also, so I was wrong on single platform. Monkey Ball 2 probably also.

Was any place where the game was not published by Nintendo?
Arcades.

Did F-Zero GX really sell that much? Fucking hell.

It was completely absent from Celine's million seller list:

I love this guy. Every single game I played from him has been great. Even the "bad" ones.

Can't wait for Shin Yakuza.

in that case there must be an error somewhere. either Nagoshi had incorrect figures or Nintendo screwed up somewhere.
that would mean they'd have to have screwed up ever since the GCN then, because their charts are updated regularly. the former is much more plausible than 17 years of incorrect reporting on just one specific game

There's no chance F-Zero GX sold that many copies. That would have required the game to have a massive boost in sales after the release of the Wii.

I love Yakuza. But F-Zero GX is the best racing game ever...

I have a plan. Just once, allow syn sophia to make a full console Yakuza. I mean, they made Def Jam and the N64 wrestling games, so they know their fighting. But they also made Style Savvy/Style Boutique, so they'll also make the best darn hostess game ever lol. I promise the game will be amazing.

Then with the dev team's hands free... F-Zero NX! Everyone wins!

But really, Nagoshi is very talented and has made a lot of great games. I didn't ever consider Super Monkey Ball to be a very cheap, very quickly developed game by a tiny team, because it's just a really great game overall.

Is he sort of saying with the New Yakuza game he wants it on more platforms this time. I can see PS4/PC easily and possible XB1 if they want to release it there.

Have you ever looked into playing the two PSP Yakuza games? Sounds like they are exactly what you want. The combat is actually done by Aki/syn sophia and the combat is different to previous Yakuza games - mainly focusing on one on one fights and tons of different fighting styles while still providing you with the full Yakuza experience on a handheld. Great stuff!

F-Zero GX is so good. I would kill for that team to make another F-Zero.

Game blew my eyelids off so to speak.

Polyphony Digital recruited 3 programmers from the F-Zero GX team at AV (including the lead programmer) and put them to work on Gran Turismo games. A few other programmers left as well. The rest went on to pretty much form the Yakuza team.

Criterion likely would have never gotten past the prototype stage. "Thank you but no". Just like 99% of the Western projects the past 10 years.

His Yakuza comments were interesting, I guess I never imagined him living a Kiryu lifestyle. But as they say, write what you know.

A lot of developers back in the '90s seemed to have been partying it up. Kazuma Kaneko at Atlus is another one that comes to mind.

Really curious what sort of changes he's talking about lol

Probably F-Zero hostess clubs.

Gamecube Super Monkey Ball only taking 10 people at the time is very interesting. I wonder how that staff compares to the last Super Monkey Ball made.

Have you ever seen the guy:

I mean yeah, I just figured his style was more aspirational and for show instead of Yakuza being a semi-autobiography, like some kind of videogame dev version of Hunter S. Thompson. I didn't actually think Japanese devs would have that much free time to get into trouble.
