A number of people have been injured after a car crashed into security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament, Scotland Yard say.

Armed police, ambulances and firefighters are responding to the incident in central London, which happened shortly after 07:30 BST.

Officers were seen surrounding the vehicle before a man was arrested.

Streets around Millbank, Parliament Square and Victoria Tower Gardens have been cordoned off.

Images posted to social media showed a man in handcuffs being led away from the car by officers.

Hope no one is badly injured.

Didn't they put up a whole bunch of measures after the last car attack on parliament? Hopefully those have been effective to protect the pedestrians. Hope everyone recovers quickly, the BBC news article mentions some cyclists were hit.

Ewalina Ochab, who also saw the crash, said: "I think it looked intentional - the car drove at speed and towards the barriers."

She said: "I was walking on the other side of the road. I heard some noise and someone screamed. I turned around and I saw a silver car driving very fast close to the railings, maybe even on the pavement."

The vehicle did not appear to have a front registration plate when it crashed, she added.

As its rush hour seems like a "failed" attempt to kill people. With the driver arrested shouldn't take long for authorities to question them.

My wife just got the train to London for work, she is already a bit nervy. Thankfully seems this is a lone wolf and not an effective one at that, assuming it's not just some guy off his meds.

Seems like minor injuries only thankfully (presumably the cyclists noted to have been struck). Looks deliberate but will wait for further detail now. With suspect in custody shouldn't take too long to find out more. Stay safe my fellow Londoners.

Most of the barriers, including the one that was hit today, were already in place before March 22nd. I think the additional ones are on the approach from the bridge.

The two police (?) who were stood at the barrier when he came at them should put the lottery on. Came awful close. Glad no one was killed but one of those cyclists really took a hit. I'll never understand it. No one will be talking about this next week but the driver fucked his life completely by attempting it.

He has dead eyes in the picture of him being arrested.

Not going to post those as I don't think he should get fame from it. But you can tell that's a bloke who has nothing going for him.

Utter fucking scumbag, lucky he only got arrested.

I usually like reading The Independent but this is fucking garbage to be putting out right now

The "debate" about antisemitism, about the burqa and niqab, the hateful tone of so much that goes on in social media, the talk of traitors and treason, enemies of the people. If you want to see what racial or religious hatred looks like, you need not infiltrate some terror cell; just take a look at the comments left below the line on popular news websites, or surf around Twitter.

Sooner or later there was going to be a reckoning, a tangible act in response to the goading and climate of fear we seem to have generated in our peaceful land.

Don't "normalize" terrorist attacks as being a reckoning or tangible act in response to other shit because it might not be great either.

We've been facing bouts of terror attacks in the UK for quite a few years now, The Independent, in case you forgot reporting on any of those instances in the past.

Talk about throwing a bone to ignite twitter and all the other loonies

That Independent article is dumb as fuck. They've taken the exact opposite position to the right wing mugs, without realising that it's just as stupid.

It's opportunistic journalism which is what bothers me most. It's almost as if The Independent either doesn't realize or does actually know, writing such a fluff piece during the time of lieu waiting for the police to investigate with paragraphs like

We may be horrified by the idea of another possible attack, and, to a degree, relived that the violence was not far worse – it's shocking, yes, but how many of us can claim to have been completely surprised? Is this the new normal?

Doesn't do anything at all to help their supposed cause. An article which the author tries to frame as being one against racism/xenophobia/etc.

The article contradicts itself as well with the author wishing to state "peaceful land" then finishing with "is this violence the new normal?".

Very poor article all round at a time when fact reporting and objective journalism was required. Keeping in mind this article was pushed out before the police stated they were treating it as a terrorist attack. Precisely the time when we usually leave it to the Daily Mail for speculation/opinion pieces and expect better of the more reputable MSM outlets.

The footage on the BBC of him driving is funny in a sad way.

How shit at life do you have to be to fail to kill someone or hurt more people in central London in a car?

Can't even do that right. Says it all.

This idiot is going to spend the rest of his life in prison for carrying out the least successful terrorist attack ever.

Wasn't worth the drive down from Birmingham was it?

He didn't say these people and I don't like how you've stated that he's a wasteman for not being able to do more damage.
Let's be thankful he didn't do more damage.

Nah, this guy caused some damage. The least successful ones are those that get a fake bomb from undercover police, and get arrested immediately after hitting the button. I always find that morbidly hilarious.
