I finished Ys VIII about two weeks ago. I think this is the best Ys game by a long shot and probably my favorite Falcom game now.

Falcom finally hit the sweet spot between action, story, exploration and action/platforming (the Dana sections are so good). The systems had pretty good psynergy between them (loot, in-game economy, weapon upgrades, castaways, sidequests, raids, minigames) and they keept adding new mechanics throughout the game to keep it interesting all the way through. It reminded me of Dark Cloud 2 but more refined and without the randomized dungeons.

I haven't had any luck in the Buy/Sell/Trade thread, so I hope it's okay if I ask here: if anyone's done playing the PS4 version of Ys VIII and wants to sell it to a good home for cheap, I would be super appreciative. The game is near impossible to find for anything less than full price, which I just can't afford.

Haven't played viii yet but I love this series. Finished oath in felghana maybe a month or so ago.

Didn't know we had a community thread. Glad to be here.

I was just at Gamestop and almost bought this game. But..... I still have XC2 to finish, not including Octopath. Maybe it will be on sale this black friday or something and I'll pick it up. I like the action/combat of this game.

I'm about 20 hours into Ys VIII on the PS4 and I feel pretty confident in saying that this is the best JRPG I've played in years beside Persona 5. Blows the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Ni no Kuni 2 and Octopath Traveler out of the water.

Yeah, I'm almost 30h in on the switch ( in one week, which is a lot for me), and it's really great. Dark Fact induced PTSD prevented me from trying another game in the series, but so far VIII is really great.
Thank FiveSide for the recommendation in the rpg thread!

You should give the Trails series made by the same developer a try too if you haven't already. It's more traditional turn based RPG compared to the action RPG Ys series, but it's just as great.

What's the weird pushing women in to corners and measuring them all about? Product of it's time or just some weird creepy shit?

It's some random weirdness. The second game lets you "measure" a little kid the same way and the achievement you get is even called something like "the police is on its way".

I love the Ys games. They are probably the best action RPGs to come out of japan. I've only played through four of them though. Ark of Nephistim on PS4, Celceta on Vita, Origins on PS4 and my favourite Ys VIII on PS4.

They have the perfect blend of story, action fantastic combat, bosses and amazing soundtracks.

I just wish they'd release the others on PS4 as well. I'd buy them day 1.

I have access to them on PC but I just want trophies to go with them. I absolutely loved platinuming Ys VIII it was so fun. What are the best versions of the others anyway? On the chance I do play them. Are the SNES/PC Engine CD ones worth playing? Or are there better versions out these days? I guess the best ones I haven't played are Oath in Felgana and Ys VII?

Also I have Tokyo Xanadu but haven't gone past the second chapter it's on my backlog on PS4. I know it's not Ys but the combat reminds me a lot of it. Is it any good?

Ys Seven's PC port is a very no-frills port with few of the bells and whistles we usually get with XSeed's releases, but it features a slightly updated localization script and it runs at a steady 60 fps, so it's still a step up over the PSP version.

The PSP version of Felghana has voice acting which is absent in the PC version, but it also has the Double Boost mechanic, which allows you to do something many Ys veterans consider a heresy of the highest order: heal during boss fights.

Both PC versions have achievements, though getting all of them on Felghana isn't going to be a walk in the park.

What a coincidence, I just decided to pick up the games for the Saturn. I owned the PSP version back in the day and got pretty far into II, but ended up dropping it. Someday I'll beat the games, and move on to III and IV. I own the PC Engine release!

I wonder if it's possible to jump straight into II in the PC Engine release.

I beat Ys I&II this year and enjoyed them II much more. Really need to get back to it because I really wanna play VIII but I wanna play at least all the other localized titles in order first. Have Ys VI installed on my PC but it was acting weird with my PS4 controller so I need to get that sorted.
Have you enabled the setting in Steam where it forces controller support? When i did that Napishtim ran very well through my DS4, before that it would go spastic on the opening screen.

I'm still waiting for Lacrimosa to go on a sale that is worth anything more than 10% as NISA was sneaky enough to make a very limited print squandering the used market for the game.... However i'm also playing Mask of the Sun now as i was disappointed with some lore developments of Celceta hoping to find some more interesting version here. The gameplay is really bad though

Been on a bit of an Ys run this year. I played and loved Origin a few years ago and the original on Turbografx when I was a kid, but this year I've beaten:

Chronicles I & II
Felghana
Napishtim
Celceta

Just finished Celceta yesterday and it's the first of the "party system" games I've played. Wasn't crazy about it at first since the combat didn't feel great and I spent a lot of time running around trying to figure out how to get to the next map marker. It got much better as more party members joined and the map opened up.

Had a good time with it and looking forward to Seven and VIII.

I went into Ys VIII (roughly 30 hours into it right now) after completing Tokyo Xanadu Ex so here are my ramblings. Note that I picked Hard mode in both cases.

Overall, I like the gameplay in Tokyo Xanadu better. It is a bit slower but feels more deliberate (and closer to golden age Ys than the modern Ys games), while Ys 8 can feel chaotic at times. This is in part due to not having as many mobs ganging up on you, but also thanks to the control scheme which has less overlapping commands:
-In TX, while your 'element' (equivalent to slash/pierce/blunt) somewhat matters, it's more important that you master your attack types (normal/flying/projectiles) which are roughly all assigned to one specific button.
-In Ys VIII, you just switch characters and spam your attack buttons.
Also in Ys VIII, I often find myself switching characters, targeting enemies on/off, or using the super by accident. I guess the downside is that you don't get to customize your characters with skills in TX, but it's not really that much of a problem as the cast feel sufficiently diverse mechanically. Plus, the orbment system makes up for it.
Ys VIII also feels less lenient when it comes to perfect dodging attacks, but I guess that could be a point for it if you're into more difficult games.

On the characters, I feel indifferent about the main Ys VIII cast so far. They feel really troppy, and there isn't much I can say about them. There were some surprises with some NPCs, but overall, I don't feel like it's a strong point of the game. TX's main cast, while still full of tropes, was more likeable to me, but I suppose your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for high school kids. Also they rely wayyy too much on the power of friendship and I know that by the end of it, I was begging the game to stop with this nonsense. A lot of the NPCs felt like recycled Cold Steel characters, but there were some good ones here as well.

I guess where Ys VIII excels is the exploration part (and you won't get much of that in TX outside of the dungeons, which are straightforward in most cases, but at least come with interesting puzzles). Haven't gotten bored with it so far, which is more than I can say of Celceta / Seven. However, I'll note that I dislike the portions where you need to run away from overpowered enemies. Feels a bit pointless in an action game.

tl;dr I personally liked Tokyo Xanadu better.

This spotlight reminded me that I put down viii to wait for the translation patch and I completely forgot to pick it back up. Awesome, I know what I'm doing tonight.

I am a new Ys player , nice to see a community thread!
I have begun playing 2 games , Ys VIII for the Switch and Memories of Celceta for the Vita.
Don't smack me but I am enjoying the Vita game more than VIII. It has faster pace, more combat, it feels more arcade-y, while VIII has a super slow beginning ( about 5-6 hours in) and the port is not good for TV play.

That's the issue I'm having so this is probably it! I'm put of town at the moment so I will try when I get back, thanks!!

How is the Ys VIII port on the Switch? I play my games exclusively in handheld mode.

If the initial 30FPS isn't an issue for you, it plays fine - dynamic resolution can be a bit noticeable at times, but largely there's no problems with performance - I also only played it in handheld.

The areas that do take a consistent noticeable framerate hit are just certain rooms in the last two parts of Dana's optional dungeon, but it's not a huge part of the game.

Try an Inferno run after you're done on Normal :)

But yeah, the pre-party Ys games are noticeable harder than Seven and beyond. It's the healing items, imho.
(I think Napishtim has healing items though, but you can limit them with Catastrophe mode (which can be used in addition to the normally chosen difficulty) iirc. My memories are a bit fuzzy.)

I almost breezed through Ys VIII on nightmare but TOiF is significantly harder. It feels like the perspective makes dodging and striking harder. Ys VIII is certainly better.

4 months after, and I can't stop thinking on how fucking great was YS VIII. It's been a long time since I felt something like this for a game

Always felt the series was way up my alley, but had some trouble getting into it. Most I've played is about three hours of Origin (seemed like a sensible place to start) and while it was definitely fun, it's gameplay wore thin fairly quickly. Though perhaps I just didn't stick with it long enough? Admittedly, Lacrimosa looks really fucking fun, and the switch version is very tempting.

Any tips from the Ys fans? Should I resume Origin or should I jump into another entry?

Origin is peak Action RPG greatness, definitely stick with it! Also, Ys games are at their best at higher difficulties, but for a first playthrough of Origin I definitely recommend Normal.
There's also a 2nd character to play as, maybe try and see if that one is more to your liking. Though you'll have to play through both campaigns anyway in order to unlock the 3rd character, who is awesome.
It's also a prequel to I & II, so you'd get more out of it (story-wise) by playing those before it, but it's fiiine to continue on. Origin was my first Ys game as well.

I just started playing Ys VIII on my Switch, any advice for getting started in the game?

It's my first Ys and I decided to start with shard for the challenge.

You need 200 Reputation points for the better ending, and sidequests (which you need to raise it), expire if not done in time. You'll have access to a notification board that states their general range for expiry, and there are more than 300 points to get, so you don't have to 100% the game.

Also, for the Switch; be aware you can remap the controls rather than just choosing preset schemes, so mess around with them if you find it uncomfortable.

What is the sidequest expiration time in VIII tied to anyway; actual play time, story progression or what?
Story progression. Do them as they show up if possible, but there are really only a few cut off points in the game. If suddenly a lot of quests have a short expiration date, that's your cue to hurry up and finish them all.

Late reply, sorry! But yeah the print definitely was small, the only used copies i can find close to me go for €100+ even which is just ridiculous.

Thoughts on the next Ys in development confirmed to be a new adventure that follows after VIII rather than the remake of V they've been teasing for years?
Also is Romn really a safe bet for Adol to visit next?

Considering Romn was still active in Seven, I think it will be somewhere else.

It's kinda hard to get a read on the routes Adol takes. One route would be to get off in Greek and then journey north into Garman if sea fare is getting more dangerous.

I'm betting on an adventure in or around Ispani. Prior to the very start of Ys VI, Adol and Dogi were in Ediz before escaping with Ladoc and Terra aboard their ship. As Ys VIII comes chronologically before VI, that seems as safe a bet as any.

I finished the Oath in Felghana and it was really good as well, albeit quite different from VIII. I think I'm gonna binge all Ys games in the near future. If those two games are anything to go by, this is franchise practically tailor made for me. VIII is legit one of the best JRPGs I've ever played.

I recommend the PC version for its updated controller/graphics options and much superior stability, but the DotEmu port works just fine. XSEED updates their version more often, too, FWIW.

Well be funny if YS IX is a direct sequel of YS VIII, like, somehow the ship stranded again and you have the same party
