Saddened to hear about Jonathan's passing. I must admit he didn't look too well in the past few years. He probably had a suspicion but probably failed to do anything about it.

I began reading his articles in the LA Weekly way back in the late 90's and early aughts and thought it was the highlight of the paper. He made the food sound so unique and amazing. He did it with a certain panache and a little bit of gonzo thrown in here and there. I wasn't surprised when he won the Pulitzer because his writing was very unique. No other food critic wrote like him. RIP J Gold.

How about the shoot out at the Silver Lake Trader Joe's? Don't live in the hood anymore but used to go there regularly. Just a bit frightening thinking about how close to home that is. That TJ's is such a nightmare too. Hyperion right around there is crazy congested nowadays. It was nothing like that when i was living in the hood, granted that was over 10 years ago.

I'm sorry. lol No, really. Welcome. Try not to stay within territorial boundaries. There is so much here that people never experience.
yeah. I'm here for grad school so I'm gonna try to explore. I never know if i'll stay or return to New York (I want to be one of those fancy bicoastal people)

Just had some pretty darn good vegan ramen at Ramen Hood in Grand Central Market. The broth is made from sunflower seeds... impressive.

Was reminded this weekend is Nisei Week down in Little Tokyo, anyone going?

Lots of stuff going on at the JACCC plaza including a gyoza eating contest (I think matt stonie is usually there), tea ceremony, bonzai exhibit, street dancing, a car show somewhere, beer garden, taiko, etc.

I will say I miss new york. But LA so far, and (I haven't even explored that much!) has been great.

Going to the USC game this saturday and a LA native's birthday saturday (maybe beach sunday? whats the most accessible beach from DTLA?)

can't wait to go to any LA GAF meet ups or if any of you all want to check out a dodgers, LAFC or Galaxy game (figure lakers tickets are gonna be to expensive lmao)

Does anyone know of any apartment locator services for cities south of LA? Like Anaheim/Santa Ana/Huntington Beach? I need to be there just before October 1st.

Been looking at rentals lately mostly using Zillow rentals. Filter out results more than 30 days old, usually gone but not removed by owner.

I've tried that. Sadly I can't find anything within my budget that allows for pets. I'm trying Apartment List but I'm not 100% sold on it. Plus I don't really know the area all that well, so I would like someone to talk to to help figure it out.

Check hotpads, padmapper, rentlinx, and craigslist.org (use the map option to view apartments) as all are decent. Where are you going to be working? The OC is pretty homogeneous with south OC being primarily newerish track housing.

I'll check out PadMapper and Rentlinx. I'm going to be driving to several dealerships throughout the area. From Hollywood to Huntington Beach. So I want something a bit more centrally located.

Hmm central would probably be along the OC/LA county line but Long Beach isn't too bad and it's technically on the border as well. You get a cool and up and coming scene and some neat looking neighborhoods. Just gotta watch out that you don't pick the wrong 'hood and it's easy to do in Long beach. Rent there is still kinda reasonable compared to LA proper.

I've seen a few places in Long Beach, but it feels like having my dog move with me is putting a major damper on where I can live.

I recently moved to long beach. Right on ocean blvd. love it. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. :)
Our building is pet friendly.

Unfortunately, I'll be moving by myself and only making $4k/mo. Which is a HUGE step up from what I'm currently making, but it's also pricing me out of a lot of apartments in that area.

If you got the time you can find a pretty decent apartment in LB for a decent amount. Hell you could even find a duplex or smallish house as well.

Curious on opinions of living situation. My wife and I recently both got new jobs. We currently live off Hollywood/Highland but are both commuting way too long now (Santa Monica and Palos Verdes). We need to move South but tough part too is we have a roommate we want to stay with who works in Beverly Hills. we own a condo in Hollywood and would prefer to buy but obviously everything is insane. What are people's opinions around Crenshaw to Western along Exposition? We would like to stay connected to rail but from my understanding those areas have been a bit unsafe in the past and certainly don't have as much going on. Any advice?
