Pretty sure the game will play and looks like a souls game without leveling weapons and giving yourself stats. So like an action game without the dex/str/magic builds.

I'm thinking that maybe there will be some sort of skill tree in this game, since Miyazaki mentioned that there would be progression of some sort, just not related to leveling up stats this time.

While Nioh does have the varying stances that give each weapon more moves, the amount of weapons is pitiful compared to the Souls games. Even base Bloodborne has about twice as many "move sets" for weapons than base Nioh does (and DLC Bloodborne has about 50 overall while Nioh has 21 or 22 IIRC). The Ninjitsu/item/magic system in Nioh is really great, but still not nearly as strong as the magic system in Dark Souls 2 or Dark Souls 3. The way items are treated like a "class" oriented item in Nioh, that can be scaled up to be useful even in tougher situations, is a really great touch though. The extremely limited enemy variety really hurts the potential of the combat in Nioh though, since aside from unique boss fights, you deal with almost any conceivable enemy encounter and arrangement within the first half. There's hardly any new enemies introduced in the second half, and there's far too few level design gimmicks or clever enemy placement to make the fights feel distinct from each other. For reference, I finished Nioh and about 70-80% of the tedious side quests in 35 hours, whereas Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne were constantly ferrying me to new areas with new enemies and more unique challenges, and those games each took me 40 hours to beat with every boss defeated (not counting Chalice Dungeons). The stamina system with the Chi Pulse mechanic is a cool touch, and I like the sense of rhythm and tactile feedback it gives to lengthier encounters (especially against human enemies). Also, the New Game+ modes are a joke of min-maxing stats and gear to avoid being one or two shot by bosses that have laughably ballooned HP pools.
This doesn't explain how my post was a hottake, unless you think someone having a different opinion than yours is a hottake.

I think it will be a mix between Bloodborne trick weapons and Niohs skill tree with abilities...unlock whirlwind attacks, spin kick, combo variations etc. But the essence of the game, such as difficulty, side stepping for positioning, back stabs, dodging will feel like a soulsborne game.

I know they're saying it will be playable at gamescom, but will footage of it be allowed to be recorded (since at E3 they gave journalists access but didn't allow footage of it to be shown)?

Guess we could have determined this from the award nominees, but I believe this is the first confirmation of this. Can't wait to hear impressions!

I can't wait for some footage. It feels like forever since we saw it, even though it's only been a couple of months.

It is playable on the show floor. No way they can stop people from filming that.

There is also a Microsoft press event on Tuesday the 21st of August (early in the morning) where the game will be playable for the press. That means you can probably expect some footage around that time as well.

The new death mechanic, grappling hook traversal, stealth as an option and combat system all seem pretty different from Souls, as is the removal of all the RPG elements.

I think the only things it shares are the interconnected world design and high difficulty.

At least that's the impression I got from the hands-on Edge preview last month.

Is there a confirmation people who aren't there will get to see the demo?

I wonder if I should buy a ticket for the media day just to play this.
I am scared of how long you'll have to wait on the public days

I mean, it not an RPG, it's a pure action game. It ditches many Souls' staples and introduces new elements, like stealth, grappling hook traversal and a new combat system. What it keeps from the Soulsborne series is a high difficulty and interconnected world. Edge went hands-on with it at E3 and called it the highlight of the show.

Starts next Tuesday.

Holy crap its already here.... snuck up on me but goddamn its time for DMC!!!!!

Agreed, it looks pretty bad, about all you can expect from the team behind DS2 & DS3 I guess. I'm assuming that the main team is working on Bloodborne 2 so there's a positive.

you really needed to click this?
Is this a sarcastic post or just purposeful misinformation? cause I'm pretty sure Miyazaki is the lead, the visionary, the creator etc on this just like DS1 and Bloodborne? In fact, it was only started when Bloodborne was finished, also lending credence to the fairly obvious fact that it is the "main team."

I'm pretty sure he was obviously being sarcastic and mocking certain posters of this very forum, since there were comments on the reveal trailer saying this looks like it was done by the "B Team" (which I think is a dumb term to throw around regardless of whether there is truth to that).

Looking forward to impressions. So glad to see FromSoftware doing something that is not part of the Soulsborne series.

SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE
Playable at the Activision B2C booth in Hall 7.1

FromSoftware, the creators of Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series, is the powerhouse developer behind Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In this upcoming game, you play as a "one-armed wolf" - a disgraced and disfigured warrior rescued from the brink of death. Which means it is up to you to take revenge, restore your honor, and kill ingeniously.

The audience at Gamescom is in for a very special treat as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will be playable for the first time on the show floor! Get a taste for some of the game's larger than life enemies and the reimagining of 16th century Sengoku Japan as you experience FromSoftware's new approach to combat and try out a variety of prosthetic arm tools.

Attendees can also check out the massive Corrupted Monk statue for a chilling photo opportunity and could possibly even snag a Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice t-shirt.

Omnipotent is talking about the t-shirt.

Some impressions from PSX South East. Apparently the trick arms all have there own unique movesets, so people who we're worried about variety should rest easy.
  • The scenery is beautiful with maple trees, those leaves on the floor float and move along your movement.
  • There's a fog door at the entrance when the boss appears.
  • After relentless parrying, the boss kneels and Sekiro executes riposte. The music changes when the boss begins phase 2, the surrounding is getting blurry, all color disappears you can see only in black and white.

Yes but this is a multiplatform game with PC as a target its most likelly that version that is being shown...

Though hopefully we can finally expect proper support for Pro / One X for this game (unlike BB and DS3), so maybe those platforms will get 1080p60?

personally i am expecting this game to be the hardest Fromsoft game to date

It could very well be, since they don't have to balance the game around every possible build players can concoct. It depends on how much weapon / gadget / skills variety we get.

The fact that the game world is rumored to be interconnected is music to my ears.

At least under Xbox's Enhanced List, Sekiro will have HDR which is cool and I think a first for a FromSoftware game. It doesn't say it's 4K though probably assuming it will run in 2K or so is my guess. But yeah I think it's safe to say that this time around the support for the upgraded consoles will be there.

If DS3 is any indication, they really didn't bother balancing the bosses too much. For the average player, fast hitting quality or dex builds probably yield the greatest success.

I also hope they don't keep perpetually escalating the difficulty. BB/DS3 difficulty has hit the sweet spot.
