Hey black women of ResetEra, I'm thinking about combing out my dreads next month or in September and I need to go back into watching and reading natural hair guides so I know how to properly care for and style my hair. In the past I watched

Chazzisawesome and read one book that I can't remember the name of. I would appreciate if you could pass some recommendations my way.

Cheers,

Oh damn are there really almost no black women on here? Do I have to summon some?

What is your hair type? Because when I was transitioning, it helped to find youtubers with similar hair as me. Products that worked for them didn't always work for me but it was a good starting point until I didn't need to watch videos at all anymore. Besides Naptural85, I don't really watch natural hair videos anymore but I remember watching channels like mahoganycurls and Mini Marley. Here's a vid that should help you too:

As far as products I really like, I use Shea Moisture's jamaican black castor oil leave in conditioner. I usethiswhen twisting my hair (i think you can buy her products at target). I don't cowash anymore and use this shampoo/conditioner (you can buy it in the store too). Also when deep conditioning my hair, I usually mix oils in the deep conditioner like this video:

'Slaps' (satin-lined hair caps) are also a new thing if you're interested in buying one. I was able to get two during a buy one, get one free sale and I have a friend that just bought some more. I hope this helps!

Sorry, K. I been running around a bit today. Wish I could be of more help but I've been rocking a TWA for the past year and a half out of sheer laziness and inability to find a stylist I like in Oakland. I can co-sign the shea moisture suggestion above as well as satin lined bonnets.

I don't mess with SheaMoisture anymore since they were bought out by Unileaver and Bain Capital. Black owned brands only for me.

I'm a 4C all around. I was thinking about trying The Mane Choice's Type 4 Leaf Clover set. I might try that Camille Rose set. Thanks for the info on the satin lined caps. I didn't know about this. A while back I went to Wal-Mart and had them cut fabric for me and I've been using that, but I made it a little too long so something like this would be better for me. I appreciate all the help.

I use Carol's Daughter hair butters and masks. I like this one. I heard the name forever ago, but never picked their products up until I saw it in a Target. Plus, it's black owned forever and a day. It changed my hair once I started doing it once a week to replace my usual deep conditioning routine. I coughed up some money for a stand dryer and I sit under it for a half hour or so with a shower cap on. I used to do a hair dryer diffuser to do similar but it's a lot of work on the shoulders. It's really the only time I put any type of heat. If I'm not wearing a wash and go, I wear twist outs for 2 days then the rest of the week wear it out. Those two days seem to lock in moisture so when I take it down it's super shiny.

Edit: 3c hair that is always thirsty.

I don't know what I have but it's super thick strands of hair, and like four of them grow out of each follicle and I got a crazy napped undercoat that's short and really tight curls
I use a satin lined cap too.
Mostly I just spray my hair with water, hemp seed oil and then rub in shea butter.
I don't comb my hair
I discovered if I just wet and fluff with my fingers, the strands of hair will tangle less
Or I just twist it.

Are you trying for length or just maintenance? What's your hair porosity? I'm a 4C low porosity type with a once a week wash day routine.

Ok. Check your porosity by taking a couple strands of clean, and I mean clean, hair and putting it in a glass of water. High porosity hair sinks, med porosity hair sticks in the middle, and low porosity hair floats. I can really only help you with low po hair because that's all I know. Avoid protein rich anything if you have low po hair. It makes our hair crusty and hard for some reason. So no avocado or super heavy Shea butter. Avoid heavy oils like olive oil too. Lighter oils like jojoba, sunflower, and grape seed are our friends here.

Every morning or every other morning you should do LCO(liquid, cream, oil). Get some water on your hair then rub a moisture rich conditioner into your hair after which you should rub in one of the oils I talked about earlier. Wash days are also important for hair maintenance. Every week or so you should apply a deep conditioner to your head after giving it a good wash. Whether or not you chose to pre-poo( cover your hair in conditioner/oil to protect the strands) is up to you. I do it because it leaves my hair much softer but for you it might lead to hydrgal fatigue(overwatered hair) which might make your hair mushy and prone to breakage.

For length I encourage protective styles and no combing. The less your hair is exposed to the elements the better. No combing because it can stress your hair out.

As for products, I can't help you there. I'm stuck on the Shea Moisture train until I can gin up enough courage to experiment again.

Just gonna go ahead and save this thread...

I wish I had anything to share but I've relied on perms and then hairdressers all my life. But I want to stop that eventually...

Here I am.

I follow mini marley and naptural 85 too.I guess I only look for hairstyles ideas instead of care. Also natural hair on YouTube is falling into the tea and challenges trope.

My hair is just like Jaden Smith. It was curly short than afro/curly as it grows.

I wash my hair with aloe and rhassoul clay .
Then it's natural hair gel like flaxseed or anything with a strong hold like Garnier Pure Clean.

Save your money on curling products .especially if you have 4c hair.

The maximum hydration method is the only thing that curled my mother's 4c hair. It's crazy.

Do you mix your clay w/ oil or just use it straight?

Sorry for getting back to you so late, I left the forum to focus on myself and my goals. I tried your method and it floated on top so I'm low porosity like you. I'll take all these tips into consideration once I comb these shits out. I appreciate the tips.

I was also on Twitter today and found this thread on non-black artists who want to draw black hair. It also can be used as a mini guide or introduction to natural hair and black hair in general. it's a good read.

I'm following because my wife and daughter both rock naturals. Wife and I both have super thick hair so it has been a challenge trying to find styles for my little one and I get mad every time she watches frozen and wants Elsa's hair. Mind blown about Shea Butter products! I'm def switching now. I use their shampoo and leave-in for my own hair!

Been trying to get my hair into a bit more natural state: been using luster oil sheen in the morning and kinky curly knot today at night.

Hey, so am not a woman but you guys seem to know what you're talking about, hoping you can help me. If I'm overstepping a boundary here, let me know and I'll back out.

I've mostly white but have a Nigerian grandfather and have very much inherited the hair from that side of the family.

Thing is I grew up in a totally white area and with no contact with that side of my family. So I honestly have no idea how to care for my hair nor did I really until recently understand it might need specific care.

My hair is always really dry and my fro is weird shaped when long. Are there any relatively cheap products I can get to get some moisture and natural style to it?

This may also be of use for my little one, who has inherited my curls, although I don't expect to be able to get her to sit still to do anything with them for a few years yet.
