Is there a way to get Amazon to refund the difference if an item drops in price as it's shipping? Because mine literally just shipped and that $50 difference is substantial.
If not, get your credit card company to give you the difference with their price guarantee policy.

This reminds me of when the HP TouchPad went on fire sale. Don't expect much, or any, future support on this thing.
I don't know why you guys keep saying this.

The phone was released with Android 7. It was updated to Android 8 shortly after that. Then it was updated to Android 9 a couple of weeks ago (they even released the update before Google on their very own Pixel phones). It is the only phone (besides the Pixel) with Android 9.

Goddamn.

I added it to my cart a few minutes ago and was ready to buy it, and as soon as I went to the cart I saw the price rised up to $365.

That will teach me not to lazy around after work.

Aaaand it's gone. Went to shop for a case for it before purchasing and missed out. Kinda pissed at myself.

That's exactly what I was doing myself. Shipping it internationally so wanted to make sure I had a case/screen protector ordered all at once.

wow I was just able to sneak this order in apparently.

I've never used an android phone before so this will be interesting.

For people who need a headphone jack, what are your use cases where simply leaving the dongle onto the headphones would make that much of a difference?

I went from a Nexus 6p (with jack) to iPhone 7 (without) and thought I would be annoyed. I got a DAP and don't actually use my phone as my main music listening device, but I sometimes do and it doesn't seem that annoying. If I didn't switch between the dap and phone I could just leave my adapter connected to the end of my headphones at all times and the functionality would basically be the same except for an added few cm.

The only issue which for me is a rare one at the moment is wanting to charge the phone while listening to music at the same time. Other than that I don't think I would care much.
watching video content or playing games in bed while charging my phone which is a regular occurrence for me

also, walking around with an adapter at all times would lead to increased unnecessary bulk in my pocket which i'd rather not have to deal with. no thank you
No headphone jack...
not getting this garbage then

Got this last night, along with a 25 dollar pair of bluetooth headphones recommended over on reddit. I opted for the payment plan, so I'm not sure if they'll be able to do anything regarding the price drop, but even if they can't, I'm pretty happy I pulled the trigger.

I do. So I guess that's needed then huh. Order says it should be here on Thursday so I'll report back.
That's it.

The first time you turn on your phone, it will ask you to login with your Google account to sync everything (contacts, photos, notes, and more). Try to use Google apps (Google Photos, Google Keep, Google Drive, etcetera) so everything is synced. The first time you save a contact, it will ask you if you want to sync it to your Google account or to the internal memory on your phone; just save them to your Google account.

Remember that pictures and videos backup on the cloud is completely free and unlimited. You also get 15GB for Google Drive.

The apps from your phone can be accessed from your PC/Mac. Just go to google.com and you will see synced data.

I usually notice my phone dying faster with bluetooth on. I have a moto g5s plus. I don't really like bluetooth because there's a sound delay. Probably uses an old Bluetooth version?

Yes, there are certainly disadvantages to any wireless system. In addition to the phone battery drain incurred by running the Bluetooth radio, there's the fuss and bother of keeping the headphones charged up, and there are also serious security issues arising from potential security holes in the Bluetooth stack or the way it's integrated with your phone's operating system. Against this there's the convenience of wireless systems and the lack of wires to get tangled up and snagged. I've found that Bluetooth gear is much more robust and lasts longer than wired audio devices.

Back in 2014, I got a "flagship" phone (Galaxy S5) for $200 w/ 2-year contract. Is that kind of deal pretty much dead these days? Even an S8 (now 14 months old) is $450 on sale. And after having the S5, I kind of don't want to go back to a Motorola. This Essential deal seems to be a fire sale for a company that's not long for this world.

I want a reasonably powerful phone, but seems like such a waste to spend $700-$1000 on something that'll get replaced in 3-4 years.

This deal is ridiculous ...

Friend of mine had the Essential phone and eventually got rid of it after a few months. He went through 3 or 4 models that were super buggy and just not ready for prime time. He was one of the first people to get the phone, went in very early on the deposit, and went through the roller coaster of "Will it ship??" for 6months, or whatever, but was already in $1000 on the device so he stuck with it (he's generally like this with devices, getting in on weird phones/devices day 1). Eventually he sold it for whatever Nokia's newest handset is.

THey've probably figured out most of the issues with the original release now, so I'm sure it's fine, and for the price... if this is an unlocked price, that's insane. Even just as like a disconnected/wifi media player that's great (although, obviously, bluetooth/usb only, no headphones, but w/e)

It is, in fact, unlocked.

Huh. I was shopping for a case too at around 9AM. I must have just barely made it.

EDIT:

So, Bluetooth headsets. Cheap ones. Should we turn this thread around into discussing headphone/headset options?

I'm against the anti-consumer practice of removing the headphone jack too, but I think that it's a small price to pay when you have a high end phone that costs $230(or even $280). If I'm buying a phone that costs close to $1k or more, then I'm not touching anything that doesn't have a headphone jack.

As someone who doesn't have any bluetooth headsets/phones/earbuds I wouldn't be opposed to it, lol.

Before I went with the iPhone X and the AirPods (which I love), I was on Android with various phones and I've used a fair amount of cheaper Bluetooth headsets...most of which I was satisfied with for the price.

The last pair I bought and really enjoyed were some Anker sport buds for $25ish. They aren't for sale anymore however I found these and if user accounts are to be believed then they're worth a shot at $25:

Yeah, the Anker ones are definitely very good. They have some newer ones with Bluetooth 5.

Does listening to music really take up that much battery that not being able to charge simultaneously is a big issue? The battery on this phone lasts so long for me that I basically only have to bring it up to a full charge for the weekend. During the week plugging it into my car during my commute is enough to keep the battery up.

Not really. I use bluetooth headphones in the office several hours per day and I do not see any noticeable battery loss. This is on my OnePlus 5T, but I assume it would be the same for the Essential.

Got this back in November? Still rockin' no case, just a note that this is one slippery phone. If you are used to resting your phone on your leg or anything best get a case quick.

Wow, so....Google really likes to collect information, doesn't it.

I didn't realize how much google FORCES you to sign in to things and what not in order to use Android. It, quite frankly, is creepy. Does anyone have any good guides on how to avoid linking email address and etc with Android?

lmao how do people not own Bluetooth earbuds/headphones in 2018? You can get a bad pair for like $15 on amazon at this point, and if you care about audio quality there's endless great high end options. The headphone jack being gone is not an issue.

For those who ordered the phone... what do you think? Satisfied?

I should be setting it up today since it came in yesterday. This will be the first time I will be doing a change over myself. I'm one of those chumps who do their phone upgrade through retail.

So hopefully I don't lose anything in the process.

Also I'm going from an Iphone 6 to this so it's going to be a world of difference.

I don't like using Bluetooth headphones. The audio quality is not as good, they have to be recharged, there's signal interference at my workplace that causes constant choppiness when I use them, and the microphones included in Bluetooth headphones are usually integrated into one of the ear cups, resulting in voice quality so poor that I always switch the voice input if I need to call someone.

Bluetooth headphones may be a fine choice for you, but you are not other people, and shouldn't dismiss their concerns so easily.

I can see why people hate the notch. But the Essential Phone has the smallest one.
The problem is the depth in this case. Because the notch essentially becomes status bar space or gets cropped entirely it has the effect of shrinking the usable screen space.

I don't mind it as much in the LG G7 or the OnePlus 6. The best notch design is the new Oppo R17

Do you have a Google account? What do you want to back-up? I suggest you to start fresh. Do not use a transfer tool or anything. Just install Google Photos in your iPhone so every picture gets uploaded to your Google account (unlimited storage for photos and videos). That way every photo/video will be available in your Essential phone (or any other phone).

Every issue you listed aside from sound quality would be negated by AirPods or anything with the W1 chip.

Yes. Still one of the best values for your money right now, but $224 was a steal. Maybe it will drop in price again soon? Black Friday?

Good point, black friday will probably have some other good deals as well. Unfortunately there are some one star reviews that says there are some reception issues with t-mobile so maybe its a skip.
