Whannell said earlier that there wouldn't be sequel but that was because the film wasn't doing well box office-wise
Is there going to be a sequel?' All I'll say is this: In light of what I'm hearing trackingwise, no. There's not going to be a sequel," he says.
"If I've ever flirted with the idea in my mind I try to push it out, purely as a holistic exercise in self-preservation. I don't want to get excited about a sequel idea to then only have it ripped away from me by the damning force of reality. Upgrade is an independent film, it's being given a limited release in 1,500 theaters, we don't have a huge advertising budget and there's not the expectation of this being a giant hit.

In that mindset, I'm not even entertaining the thought of a sequel right now. I'm happy that the film has been received well by critics and by the people who have seen it but the champagne will stay on ice for the time being."

here
doesn't surprise me, Blumhouse has been expanding its scope is a big way ever since it started getting major hits

I'm alright if it doesn't get a sequel, I just hope it's enough for not-Tom Hardy to finally get that Prometheus stink off of him

I liked Quarry

This movie could go so many places it needs a sequel. You establish the villain winning and then to stop it is letting a great thing needlessly die.

Stopping there is far better than showing what happens next. Showing what STEM does next could never as brutal or as cool as the implications of what it will happen next.

Could do well as a tv series.
1) Could see The Purge show being a test-run for expanding movies like Get Out and Upgrade into series that delve deeper into their worlds

2) A show would be far better than another movie. The movie wraps up everything with its story and the major aspect that made Upgrade work was the chemistry between Grey and STEM. Doing a sequel with a villainous STEM misses what made Upgrade effective.

But a show expanding the scope away from STEM to cover the growing shift of the world as the numbers of upgraded humans rise, the hinted-at conflict between upgraded humans and self-aware AI, and STEM as a mysterious force in the background enacting its own plan like Samaritan from Person of Interest? That could be interesting

I'm in for a sequel if they do the reverse T2. STEM (as Grey) is the bad guy now and they have to stop him. Probably need a new protagonist who STEM 'kills' and then has to be upgraded to get revenge.

Disagree. There are a million places this could go. Why not get creative and explore the world? It makes zero sense to establish stem and then leave him behind.

Just finished watching it. I wouldn't be peeved if it doesn't get a sequel.
The good guys don't need to win all the time.

Im good either way. It was a great movie and I wouldn't mind an sequel basically, even if it did end perfectly.

Purge it up, Blumhouse. It's a great premise and I'd love to see more of its take on grimy cyberpunk and sick-ass fight scenes; I'm fine with a clean break from the actual characters, though.

The only reason I'd be down for a continuation of the universe is due to that one line from the dark web hacker. "We can't let them win". It was fascinating because now that I've finished the film, her allegiance could be interpreted either way.

And that brings up a whole bunch of interesting questions!

Upgrade was an obvious love letter to Death Note.

This would be a love letter to the second half of Death Note. Which I dont think anyone wants.

Personally I'd love a sequel, have them take it more toward the horror route with the ending, kind of like The Guest (a similar great movie that you should watch if you haven't).

Literally just finished the movie like 10 mins ago and it was AMAZING imo. Idc I'd love sequel even though the ending was great. I really didn't see it ending like that it totally caught me off guard but I loved it.

I thought it was a guy being "installed" with KITT but it turned out STEM was KARR all along.

The ending is perfect so I don't see the point of a sequel.
Same here
Maybe I could see a storyline where
STEM makes more of itself but one set is flawed and end up as actual partners to bring down STEM's upgraded humanity together.
Even then it just feels like really trying to force a sequel where unnecessary

I want a sequel, because I desperately want it to go full Cyber Punk. I want more corporate espionage, with a plethora of goons who have ridiculous cybernetic enhancements. Upgrade dipped it's toe in that type of universe, but I want it to go the whole way.

Still got to watch it, but I'd love for it to get a second chance at the box office; I've heard that it has an interesting universe that could be expanded upon.

I've said it before but I'll say it again, the ideal way to go about a sequel would be thinking of the first movie as an origin of a villain, so have the next movie be the origin of a hero. There's very clearly some other plot details going on in the world that we just dont see because it didn't concern Gray.
