Totally random aside, has anyone played this game in Early Access and would you recommend it as it is coming out of Early Access soon? https://store.steampowered.com/app/368340/CrossCode/
Well, I enjoyed my time with the game. Although, I did not play very far and it has been quite a while. Had to take a break and then I just decided to wait for the 'full release'. I'd recommend it if you are craving for an SNES era action RPG with quite a few newer touches. Story reminded me quite a bit of the .hack anime.

Time to do this. I will be listing any upcoming 2018 role playing games for 2018 and onward. I will NOT be sorting by release date. Instead, I will sort the list by the type of game it is. It's more of a broad stroke, but I hope that people will like the format. When a game releases, I will post about it in this thread. Already released 2018 games will not be listed.

NOTE: this post will be continuously be updated. I'm beginning with PC games as I am copying the list from my RPGCodex thread.

FiveSide Could you put this in the OP? This list is only for upcoming rpgs. Once a game releases, it will be removed from this post, but I will post about its release in the thread. This is for games releasing on PC. I'm doing a console variant in a few days or this upcoming weekend.

I've been playing Fallout 3 and it's actually really good? I've always sort of dismissed it as being inferior to Fallout 1/2 because of the whole "Oblivion with guns" thing. And while the actual game is on the simpler side, there's a lot to it!

The best thing is the fun/unique premises most quests have. The worst is, of course, having to navigate metro tunnels (but even that becomes kinda okay once you open up a lot of fast travel points and don't have to it as much)

I'm also playing Dragon Quest VII and that's a fantastic game. Finished El Ciclo – really enjoyed that town's story.

Absolutely. Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I'm on vacation and have had limited internet access. Thankfully it should be pretty consistent from here on out, and I'm looking forward to seeing what RPGs are coming out (haven't looked through the list yet).

A list of upcoming RPGs is something that a lot of people would be very interested in, even people who aren't already following this OT. I was thinking of making a thread on gaming side saying that you've put this list together and then linking back to the OT here. Do you mind if I do? Or would you rather do it yourself (or not at all)?

Time to do this. I will be listing any upcoming 2018 role playing games for 2018 and onward. I will NOT be sorting by release date. Instead, I will sort the list by the type of game it is. It's more of a broad stroke, but I hope that people will like the format. When a game releases, I will post about it in this thread. Already released 2018 games will not be listed.

NOTE: this post will be continuously be updated. I'm beginning with PC games as I am copying the list from my RPGCodex thread. Console games will have its own post.

Edit: messed up the date

Labadal I've hit the character limit in the OP. For now I'll put a highlighted link to your post instead, and I'll also make a banner for it when I return to my workstation later this week.

FiveSide Don't worry about late response! I was on vacation, too. First day back to work. A link to the post makes most sense.

I don't mind if you make a thread about it, but I'd say, give it a week or something. I'm going to do a console list, but I'm going to see what happens at Gamescom first.

I think it's 2019, tbh. It'll be @ Gamescom. Hopefully, they'll announce a release date. My most anticipated arpg.

I absolutely love FO3. I also loved the first two games, and whilst 3 is very different, it's still a brilliant game.

I've also got my eye on Biomutant (possibly because it was mentioned earlier in this thread, might've even been by Labadal haha). I'm probably most excited for The New World but man I'm still bummed that it's 2020...

Alright, I'll start on the console list.

For now, it won't be formatted, I'll work on that as I go. Thought I'd write some games down to get me started. I got a few games for now. FiveSide You can make the thread whenever you want. I had nothing to do, so I just posted a few games. This'll probably be done by the end of the week. Being realistic, I doubt we'll see many rpg announcements that will have a factor on these lists.

Good choice. Can't wait to start this one. I still haven't finished Xanadu Next. It kind of lost steam towards the end for me. I managed to get to the lich and fought him once but I haven't played it since.

Well, one of the games from the list that I don't own made the list. Not beneficial to my 'backlog'. So, I don't know. How close is it to actual Shadowrun?

Have fun with Dragonfall. It's a really good CRPG. A bit limited in scope and I am not a fan of the "instanced" areas, but otherwise really good.

So, after beating Sacred and Dishonored 2 I returned to Gothic 3 which I started (again) in 2016. I am having a lot of fun. The game is big, like really big. I will play this for quite some time. I see myself abandoning it again when Dragon Quest XI is out and returning to it in a few months/years, but I will eventually finish it.

I kinda wanna return to Gothic 3 again some day. The only things I remember are getting absolutely decimated by wild boars for the first 50 hours of the game, murdering whole villages by leading wild boars into them, wandering around the snow area for years because I got lost and loosing my 80 hour safe in a slave mine.

Dragonfall thread is going up shortly. I've already played it but it's pretty short and a lot of fun so I might run through it again with you all.

Anyway, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark was mentioned on Labadal's list of upcoming PC RPGs. I was checking it out and to be honest, it's looking like a game that any FF Tactics fan might seriously want to consider. Steam page and gameplay video below:

It has great reviews on Steam, at 95% at the moment.

Nice, Dragonfall, might be enough to get me to commit. I've played the first few missions twice but keep getting pulled away by other things.

Loved Shadowrun Returns, and the sequels are supposed to be much better.

it says its invalid.
Try this:

You need to reply to this thread in order to see this content.
If this works then I need to refresh all my invite links. The old one was set to never expire though so that's strange.

Also since we were discussing Biomutant above, anyone interested in the game should check out this thread and the sizzle reel/gameplay footage that released at Gamescom.

Yeah, sounds like a true Gothic experience :D

I just arrived in the highlands. I got the Paladin armor but wolves and sabertooth cats still jank me to death as soon as there are more than 2 of them, lol. Glad I invested skillpoints in the bow - a good way to cheese them.

The game is pure jank, but it is still a great game because of the exploration, skillsystem, sense of progress and the roleplaying you can do.

I remember running around the desert casting rain of fire on local fauna. That was cool.

It's been a while, but I don't think Gothic 3 actually deserves all that hate. I was able to play and (almost) finish it even at launch – no doubt the subsequent patches made it a lot better. The main new thing compared to the first two games is that there are distinct locales with different people living there – middle eastern folks in the desert, vikings in the north and regular "europeans" (and orcs!) in the middle. Kind of a Dragon Quest thing, I guess? Which is good, of course.

I also remember the town/reputation system to be pretty cool – like, you could side with orcs and give entire towns to them (or not).

The game is really beloved in Germany, even when it launched. But it really had severe issues. I ran barely on high end systems and it was very, very buggy. But yeah, nowadays it's totally playable after all the effort the community put into it.

And yes, you can do a lot of cool things in the game. You can side with different factions and work for or against them openly or secretly. It's very sandboxy on the one hand but also very focused on the other with clear quests and goals. That's what I meant with the roleplaying aspect of it is really good.

The Risen games were actually a step back from what Gothic 3 tried to achieve. I still liked them a lot, but Gothic is the better series. I am still looking forward to playing ELEX. Love my Piranha Bytes jank. The have a lot of heart and especially in German they are also very funny games. I don't know how it works in english or how the translation is. But I laugh at the rough dialogues and humor all the time.

So, I just finished up Terranigma this week. I didn't really feel like making an LTTP thread but did want to share my general thoughts on it.

I played it as part of my RPG homework (which is seemingly endless). Overall, I liked it quite a bit. It's fast, snappy, and has a unique quirk and charm that seems like it would fit right between Earthbound and Link to the Past. It was short, which was a plus as I'd just gotten done with a 47 hour rpg just before it, and thankfully the game isn't complicated by any means. Some iffy bosses here and there, but I never found myself frustrated or angry. I imagine I would have shattered a controller at one particular boss called Bloody Mary though...

The story was a little...bonkers, especially near the last third of the game, but it all seemed to come together at the end. Everything after defeating the final boss felt very cathartic and earned. It touched on some themes that resonate strongly with me, and the very last scene after the credits was great. It'll be hard to shake it from my head for quite some time.

It's a shame it never hit the US back in the day. I feel like it would have hit the right notes for a long of people. I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a fairly short (10-15hr) action RPG that feels like a fast paced 2D Zelda. Thanks to Fou-Lu for the recommendation.

Do you prefer to see your character in an RPG (i.e. do you prefer third-person perspectives instead of first-person)? If so, is it something that you have a strong preference for, to the point where it detracts from the experience in first-person RPGs?

Back in E3 season, there was a bit of a controversy surrounding the news that the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 would be in the first-person perspective. While many welcomed this news, others were disappointed to varying degrees - some so much so that questioned whether they still wanted to play the game.

While there was a lot of hyperbole and knee-jerk reactions in the debate at that time, I think the discussion about the importance of seeing your character in an RPG is still a fascinating one for a few reasons.

Firstly, I'll say that I am one of those people who does, indeed, have a strong preference for third-person perspectives where I can see my character on-screen. It's not to the point where I skip first-person games (Prey ended up being one of my all-time favorite games last year, for instance). But it's still a very strong preference, and in games like Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Fallout: New Vegas, and The Elder Scrolls, I do in fact move the camera out to a third-person perspective.

I've often wondered why I have this preference. After all, if you think of "role-playing" on a conceptual level, it seems to make more logical sense to have a first-person perspective; after all, you're "playing a role" and therefore the most direct way to really inhabit that role is to experience the world expressly from that character's perspective. To basically possess that character and see the world exactly as they would see it.

However, I think the crucial point that makes me prefer third-person perspectives is that I'd rather project onto a character rather than be the character myself. I find that in first-person games, because I don't have anything to project onto, I tend to play them in a relatively straightforward fashion and don't really get as invested in the role-playing. On the other hand, when I can see my character on the screen, I end up more invested in thinking "what would they think?" "How would they act right now?" and tend to "role-play" in a more engaging way as a result.

There are aspects of that mentality that don't really stand up to intense scrutiny but, regardless, I've found that third-person perspectives have become my strong preference over the years, and I believe it's for the reason discussed above. I wouldn't say it necessarily "detracts" from the experience in a first-person game, but it's still something that tends to keep me more engaged in the role-playing itself as I go through the game.

for me it's more about wanting to see more stuff around me at a time than anything else

so yeah first-person stuff is pretty awful for that and isometric is vastly superior to third person as well

Anything but first person. First person feels so restrictive and would make me sick after playing for a while. That said, it's not a deal breaker for me. If it'sa good RPG, I'll play it even in first person. The best scenario is if the game offers both perspective, such as Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

Also, RPG is all about customization for me, and fashion is one important part of customization. Thus, I also hate the trend in JRPGs when your characters are stuck in their default outfit for the whole game. I mean, it's a 50-100 hours long RPG it's gonna be stale after a while. Most of the time, the only way to change your outfit is by unlocking them, or worse, purchasing DLCs. Ultimately, I think it's just one of the main characteristics of JRPG.

Perhaps a blunt answer but it doesn't really matter to me at all.

That's the reason why I lost interest in Cyberpunk 2077.

It really doesn't matter to me as well, but now that I think about a lot of my favorite RPGs are in first person, so maybe there is an unconscious preference on my part.

I like first-person very much if we're talking about grid-based dungeon crawlers. Otherwise, I greatly prefer to see my character.

I'm a mega mark for dungeon crawlers, so first person is my jam, but I love me some isometric RPG's too so really... doesn't matter that much.

Speaking of dungeon crawlers, y'all better be playing Bard's Tale Trilogy Remastered, they did a phenomenal job with it.

I was thinking, would a MMO be a good category to explore for a RPG club game?

There are plenty of older and/or more obscure MMO's out there that I suspect most might have not played or have played so long ago that it has gone through planty of updates. Most MMO's are free to play anyway so there might not even be a need for a monetary investment, or a very small one to buy the game itself. I think it would be really fun to try something together with the club participants. Even though personally my gaming time is pretty limited these days, I wouldn't mind jumping in on some MMO action for a month or so.

It's not that big of a deal for me really. As long as I have an option to customize and view my character in the game world. Like in Bethesda Fallout's and TES games when you can zoom out to third person, yet I still prefer to play those games in the first person. This feature is absent from Skyrim VR which annoys me to no end.

The look of your character is really important in reflecting the personality you're trying to give to it. So I really want to see the character and the more customization options you have the better. This is probably why it's more difficult for me to get into games with a "fixed" protagonist.

So after putting it down in 2001, I restarted Golden Sun. Popped the cart into my old NDS and I'm loving it. It was on one of the very first JRPG's and I totally get it now after over a decade of playing JRPGS since. I barely remember the game and it feels like such a fresh experience. I'm super lucky I got the sequel The Lost Age.

So anyone wanna discuss GS and Isaac and crew?
