That's odd. I assumed it used the depth camera for proper tracking so would be using the IR stuff? If it's just using the font facing camera wouldn't it be doable on an older iPhone?

It uses the depth camera to rescan the face map every once in a while to actually keep things accurate, but it used the camera for the animations themselves

What website do you guys use for iOS backgrounds? Wallhaven seems to be more for the desktop screens.

The one time Face ID has consistently not worked for me is when I'm lying down in bed at nighttime and the lights are off. I can stare directly into it (i.e., no weird angle), and that shit doesn't work. Anyone else experiencing this?

I find it odd that a lot of built-in iOS wallpapers seemingly got removed in iOS 11 - there are surprisingly few choices. what happened to those glass bead looking things on a black background?

I have been routinely surprised at how consistent it is unlocking for me in bed. On my side with my face on my pillow... no problem. On my back with my head propped up at a weird angle from my pillow... no problem. What position are you lying in that causes you issues? Have you tried entering your PIN after fail so that FaceID can learn from that failed scan?

Yup, I end up entering the PIN most of the time. It works in the dark when I'm lying down on my bed maybe 5% of the time, and that's after me locking and waking up the phone several times to try and get Face ID to work.

It's not supposed to matter whether it's dark, right? Isn't it based on infrared sensors?

Another blown use case I noticed was at the gym. I'll have my phone sitting on my lap while sitting up and resting in between bench press sets. The phone doesn't recognize my face, and I usually gotta pick it up and look directly at it to unlock.

Are we sure this is a thing? I see people keep mentioning it, but is there any proof of it?

it is a thing, but it is only temporary

To improve unlock performance and keep pace with the natural changes of your face and look, Face ID augments its stored mathematical representation over time. Upon successful unlock, Face ID may use the newly calculated mathematical representation—if its quality is sufficient—for a finite number of additional unlocks before that data is discarded. Conversely, if Face ID fails to recognize you, but the match quality is higher than a certain threshold and you immediately follow the failure by entering your passcode, Face ID takes another capture and augments its enrolled Face ID data with the newly calculated mathematical representation. This new Face ID data is discarded after a finite number of unlocks and if you stop matching against it. These augmentation processes allow Face ID to keep up with dramatic changes in your facial hair or makeup use, while minimizing false acceptance.

Man, I'm sure the engineering behind Face ID is some next-level shit. I don't even wanna know what that code looks like.

iOS wallpapers are just horridly mismanaged. Unfortunately it's not a new thing either. I'm starting to fail to see the point of that feature existing at all. Just go get Apple's latest curated selection of pictures? Get outta here. Most of them are either ugly or tired as hell. Let people add and download wallpapers (from Apple and via app plugins) through the setting instead of having to clutter photos app. Keep old wallpapers available at least to download. It's not that hard.

But since it's not a crucial feature it will probably never get the attention it deserves.

It's not temporary. What gets discarded are your old "pictures" as you change and stop matching against them. That way the system stays up to date with your facial changes and recognizes you for how you look now, without having to redo the setup procedure.

it says the new data is discarded, not the old data

I unlock in the dark all the time without issue in the scenarios I described above. Are you making sure your phone is in the same orientation as your face? It always has to unlock from a portrait perspective relative to your face. Perhaps there is something wrong with your phone. Maybe you can have someone else try to register their face to see if it performs better for them in a similar scenario.

It's new in the sense of it being data obtained in this Face ID learning process that they are explaining about in the article, as opposed to the original setup data. It says that it only gets discarded after you keep failing to match against that data from which you can infer that it's your "older" new data, which, keeping the learning process going, gets replaced by newer data. It's like a shedding process.

Dammit, I hope my phone's not just broken. Ugh.

Same. We out here bruh.

I think battery will be improved over my three year old six and honestly that's more than enough.

My 6s was struggling to last until I got home after work so I'd have to make a point of charging while at the office. With the X I'm always >50% at bedtime, never mind getting home. I bought a wireless charger but I'm now not sure why:)

Great to hear. The iOS 11 battery horror stories had me worried and hadn't updated my 6 behind them.

Finally saw one of these in person. Was not expecting the size. It was basically the same size as my 6S, just all big, beautiful screen. For some reason I thought it'd be bigger. Still unable to make up my mind between an X and an 8Plus to upgrade in a month or so.

My X is finally due to arrive tomorrow. I literally cannot wait.
Ordered mine in the morning on the 27th and mine is due tomorrow as well, very excited. I'm coming from a 5s, it's been a long wait and I almost pulled the trigger on a 7 but I'm glad I hung in there. The rumors of the oled screen is what initially made me decide to give it another year. I'm more than ready for 4 years worth of upgrades and features. I have, however, been playing with a few of the new gestures on my iPad Pro for the past month, I enjoy the feel of them and ready to jump in with the X. Even picked up a pair of solo 3's a month ago to go along with it.

PS, first post here and really enjoying reading the forum. Hoping to lurk less and get more involved in the discussion than I did elsewhere, cheers to everyone!

Please. The OLED alone kills the 8 Plus. I'm upgrading from a 6s Plus and couldn't be happier with the form factor, display, everything.

Besides, got rid of a few Plus annoying software quirks like the rotating homescreen (which could've been cool if more apps supported landscape), and the good things about the Plus, like the keyboard with special hotkeys, Apple is dumbing down and removing.

You have the chance to pick an incremental phone with some ancient stuff or the next gen iPhone Apple has been working on and planning for years and sets the blueprint for the next decade.

I guess it's not such a big deal if you upgrade every year though, even if you regret it you won't have to suffer for long.

Get the X, you know it's the correct choice lol.

Nice to meet you. I ordered mine on my he 27th too and it arrived on Saturday. I came from a 7 and it's blowing my mind, so coming from a 5S, you're gonna pass out.

OLED means less to me when there's not an always on functionality, but that would require a complete rethink about how the OS functions.

Ordered my X on Friday, should get to me before Christmas. I'm really excited, been rocking my 6S Plus since early last year but I feel like it's time for an upgrade.

After trying cases I finally settled on a new Peel case (had one for my 7+) and a screen protector. I usually dont use a screen protector but you don't notice it much on the X. Also I just love Peel cases. I have a Magbak magnetic case in my car I use when on long drives too.

Is there a lip on the peel case?
