I've never understood why people think it's a particular good sound bite. The implication is that an "Arab" can't be a "decent, family man citizen" in defending Obama.A nice little "he's not an Arab he's a good man" sound bite not withstanding

I guess because the GOP was far gone even then?I've never understood why people think it's a particular good sound bite. The implication is that an "Arab" can't be a "decent, family man citizen" in defending Obama.
Then what is the point of these threads then? Because whenever a prominent not-so-good person diesn we get the same old thing which is allot of people get banned ,then the thread locked and then gets restarted, then something like this is posted and after that the new thread usually dies.
Why do evil people automatically deserve respect just because they died?I mean the point is for people to wish condelences or pay respects, the mod note even mentioned it. People can wait for another thread down the road to talk about his bad policies. It's not that hard to 'not' say something

Are we gonna do this shit when Trump dies too?
And that will allow people to whitewash his legacy. Fucking bullshit. If you want to spit on a grave, don't do it at the funeral.
Plenty of threads to shit on Trump and his policies. When he dies, don't enter the thread, or create a new thread discussing some of his worst policies. Seems easy enough.
Then what's the point of it being a thread if there's nothing to discuss? C'mon, now.
Guy wasn't perfect, but he knew where to draw the line. It's a shame he's dying and we could do a lot worse without more people of his character in the GOP.
I have lost a family member from cancer. It is tough. :(
I don't understand why people think that was a good answer by McCain. He was basically saying that "no, Obama is not Arab. He is a good person"
Are you suggesting that the alternative of saying, "yes, Obama is totally an Arab. He is a bad person" would have been a good answer?
Because that was the Trump campaign in a nutshell, my dude. McCain lost his election the moment he told her off and probably knew it. He had enough good sense not to embolden racial resentment in the name of electoral gain. The only way to think this was a bad answer is to look at it purely through the prism of campaigning to win at all costs while completely ignoring the greater consequences to the party and country at large by feeding into that kind of destructive narrative over the long-term.
And that will allow people to whitewash his legacy. Fucking bullshit.
May he talk some sense into his daughter before crossing over Jordan.
There's nothing good to talk about with Trump. When he dies I'm going buck wild b

Allowing "safe spaces" for reactionaries to laud him after his death is what will whitewash his legacy.Creating threads shitting on him and discussing his terrible policies and impact will whitewash his legacy?
How do you figure?
There are people who visit forums as a news aggregate. For example, this thread is the first place I saw news of this, even before I saw other people talking about it on twitter. Presumably, these threads are to communicate news about a note worthy figure, not to hold a referendum on his morality.
Am I taking crazy pills? The man put Sarah FUCKING Palin on the Republican Presidential ticket and you describe his 2008 campaign as "enough good sense to not embolden racial resentment in the name of electoral gain"? What do you think Palin was brought on for?
Jesus. Michelle Bachmann was such a nightmare she made me forget Sarah Palin until now.Am I taking crazy pills? Pretty much agreed with this and also the overall message of this comicThen with all due respect the constant posts about how he is a good man shouldn't be here either
Allowing "safe spaces" for reactionaries to laud him after his death is what will whitewash his legacy.
I mean this isn't hypothetical. The exact same situation already happened on gaming side. After TotalBiscuit died, no one was allowed to criticize him in the thread. This resulted in the fomenting of a reactionary, GG community within resetera, who proceeded to shit up the community in threads like the Jessica Price/ArenaNet one, where a bunch of people said she deserved to get fired because she said something mean about TotalBiscuit. The poison continued to fester on gaming side and finally exploded with the transphobia/Cyberpunk threads resulting in a ton of permanent bans. This is always the legacy of respectability politics bullshit- the empowerment of abusers and the silencing of victims.
Why do evil people automatically deserve respect just because they died?

Deify. Idolize. Worship. I've seen all of these in this thread, and it confuses the hyperbolic fuck out of me.love too deify a man who volunteered to dropped napalm on vietnamese civilians, overall a very swell guy.

Me too, just not in the one thread breaking news of his death.
Deify. Idolize. Worship. I've seen all of these in this thread, and it confuses the hyperbolic fuck out of me.
I'm sorry to hear about that. It's unfortunate that resetera is more interested in respectability politics towards monstrous US politicians than it is in empowering voices like yours.love too deify a man who volunteered to dropped napalm on vietnamese civilians, overall a very swell guy.
and before i get warned or something, i'm ethnically vietnamese and my family fled because of the vietnam war so i think i have as much of a right as anybody to call john mccain a scumbag for being part of the monstrous destruction of my country
the fact that mods are actively seeking to curb anything too "extreme" (by some nebulous definition of their own) about this is a sign that his stature is elevated, i guarantee you that if someone like Trump died tomorrow, there would be no similar mod post at all, (deserved) vitriol would fly freelyDeify. If you want to twist it that way sure, I took it as he wanted to run a election with our the bullshit hyperbole. He stood up for Obama there and was like nah we ain't doing that bullshit here and that's not the type of campaign I'm running.I've never understood why people think it's a particular good sound bite. Ah. Ok...well, I can see what you're getting at from this angle. I thought you meant posters were deifying him.the fact that mods are actively seeking to curb anything too "extreme" (by some nebulous definition of their own) about this is a sign that his stature is elevated, i guarantee you that if someone like Trump died tomorrow, there would be no similar mod post at all, (deserved) vitriol would fly freely
I feel the same way. But, I can also understand if a Muslim found this offensive at the same time. It's good for a Republican like McCain, but, it's also not enough, he should have l said "first of all, being a Muslim doesn't make you a bad person", and went from there. If you want to twist it that way sure, I took it as he wanted to run a election with our the bullshit hyperbole. He stood up for Obama there and was like nah we ain't doing that bullshit here and that's not the type of campaign I'm running.
I've often thought of making a thread on how US foreign policy and imperialism as a whole is disgusting, with the Vietnam war as a sort of case study but the main users (If you're any kind of leftist on this website and for some reason you bother to remember usernames, you know who I'm talking about) I would want to see it would never click on the thread or reply to it because it doesn't fit into their preconceived notions of US hegemony being Super Great, the same way they dodge every thread about drone strikes and civilian massacres perpetrated by the US.Who is stopping him from making a thread on McCain's impact on him, his family, his life, how he feels, and what shaped them?
I'd check that thread out.
Someone who wholeheartedly agreed with the war in Iraq which resulted in the deaths of thousands upon thousands of Iraqi civilians is not a good man.Say what you will about his political opinions, but he was a good man.
I would love to see that thread. A lot of Americans on this board don't have the perspective needed to change this country.I've often thought of making a thread on how US foreign policy and imperialism as a whole is disgusting, with the Vietnam war as a sort of case study but the main users (If you're any kind of leftist on this website and for some reason you bother to remember usernames, you know who I'm talking about) I would want to see it would never click on the thread or reply to it because it doesn't fit into their preconceived notions of US hegemony being Super Great, the same way they dodge every thread about drone strikes and civilian massacres perpetrated by the US.

Some of you guys are just like the politicians, more concerned with decorum rather than what was actually done.
The deaths of thousands of civilians is not simply politics. McCain had a hand in that and calling him a good man is disregarding his responsibility in those tragedies. If you actually read my other post in the thread I already addressed this. I'm not derailing this thread with an argument over politics. Especially when I don't agree with pretty much any of his politics.
Like I said. Not discussing this here. If you don't like the man thats fine. I'm not saying you should. The deaths of thousands of civilians is not simply politics. McCain had a hand in that and calling him a good man is disregarding his responsibility in those tragedies.
If you don't care about the people he helped get killed, that's fine, too, I guess.Like I said. Not discussing this here. If you don't like the man thats fine. I'm not saying you should.
I've hardly ever agreed with any of his decisions or politics, but neither does he and has openly admitted to ay least some of his many mistakes. With all his misgivings, I've always had a soft spot for McCain -- especially since he sees the current administration and GOP for the white nationalist, pro Russia cult it is.
If you don't care about the people he helped get killed, that's fine, too, I guess.
