Life long iOS user looking for pointers on switching.

Interested in a Note 8 but wouldn't know where to start if I switched. All my stuff just works and from some of the reading I've done I'm a bit on edge at the thought of having to really dig into this device to get it up and running.

Any pointers or tips? Feel free to DM if this would derail the thread.

To be honest it's really easy to switch these days. Back up or sync most of your stuff using Google (contacts etc so it's linked to your account and not your sim), and the Mac/PC SmartSwitch app will do the rest. It should recognise that you're coming from an iPhone/iTunes and transfer almost everything over, including certain apps etc being redownloaded if you want it to.

I reckon you'll adjust to the new device in a few days, but these days the bulk of usage is either similar or self-explanatory.

Do iMessages move with that app too? Got a note 8 and didn't think I would like it enough to switch but now I am trying to figure out how to move all my iPhone stuff over.

I'm not actually entirely sure. Perhaps download it and give it a whirl? It's called Samsung SmartSwitch and is available for Mac and PC.

How are you finding the phone so far?

P.S if you hold your finger on any blank part of your home screen, it will take you to home screen settings. Here you can change the number of apps on your grid, delete pages, add widgets, change themes, and also swipe to the farthest left page and turn off Bixby home page so it won't appear when you swipe left from your home screen in future.

Bixby is the Siri equivalent?

Yes.

I still use it from time to time as unlike Google assist and Siri, it has system level commands, in other words you can tell it to open, work, adjust or function countless different settings, apps or tasks. Eg open app store and download so and so app. Open music player and play so and so track etc.

Was going back and forth between getting a Pixel 2 (+: less bloat, better camera, quicker updates; -: no headphone jack, no SD support) and Samsung Galaxy S8 (+: headphone jack, gorgeous screen, SD support; -: bloatware, less frequent updates) as I'm rockin' an iPhone 5s and really, really need an upgrade and am not feeling Apple anymore. The BestBuy deal of less than $400 for the S8 has me ready to bite. I'm assuming that's a great deal? Is the S8 camera decent? I travel quite a bit and would love a decent camera (particularly zoom and lower light). Also, is that Samsung Smart Transfer decent? My wife and daughter are also thinking about getting new phones (they are both on the 5s too) but are worried about losing all their calendar entries, text message history, contacts, etc.

I really don't like the way the on/off switch works now with the navigation display. Is the button supposed to be missing and make you have to go into the navbar menus to get the display back up, instead of being able to turn it off/on at will?

As a four year WP user I've been debating getting an S8+ for a while now and I'm going to get an upgrade on Monday. It is the best Android on the market, right?

The camera is one of the best on the market. And I'd personally definitely take an S8 over the Pixel 2. Though get the S8+ or Note 8 if you can afford it.

I made a post about it in another thread. Side note, the Oreo beta actually makes the S8 even quicker still.

I'd easily go for the S8. Infinitely better looking device, considerably better screen to body ratio, more screen real estate and better web browsing (the longer aspect ratio really helps), a better screen (in every metric), better features, headphone jack, wireless charging, better memory management and multitasking, better battery life etc. The Pixel 2 to me genuinely looks dated in comparison.

People who criticise TouchWiz essentially have little to no experience with newer iterations of it. It is lightning fast and offers lots of nice touches and features over standard Android.

Side note, if you have the money get the S8+ or Note 8 instead. Unless you genuinely want a smaller more compact device.

On anything where the nav bar is collapsible, a little dot will show up in the bottom far left side. If you double click this dot the nav bar will switch between being fixed, or being dynamic.

The dot only disappears when your keyboard is active, or you're using something where the nav bar is always fixed/present, eg the home screen.

I switched from always having Iphones to the S8+ last month. Overall I think it is an excellent phone and I've adjusted pretty well. The one thing I can't stand and can't figure out ways to fix is the keyboard. I always always press the . button instead of the space which is annoying. Anyway to customize the keyboard? I've tried a few things but nothing like I want.

I also hate Bixby. That button is in a terrible spot and I spent a couple hours Googling ways to uninstall and turn it off completely. The only thing I can't figure out is the alarm. Bixby briefing being turned on by default I hate. It might not be a big deal to most people but I set new alarms everyday and I forget to select my sound over it some times.

Debatable. Pixel 2 would be the easiest choice if it wasn't for the screen issues, and the S8+ also looks amazing.

Yeah, I've been doing a bit of research and it was between the Pixel 2XL, the LG V30 and the S8+. I think I'm going to go with the Samsung but its so confusing with so many choices, at least with Windows it was the choice of like one, lol

Download SwiftKey my friend. All your problems will be solved... Well not Bixby unfortunately.

nib95, thanks for the information on the S8. Ended up taking advantage of the deal (for myself and my wife and daughter). I thought about the S8+ / Note 8 but it was just a bit too large for me. Really liking it so far, though getting used to things. Still have to get the e-mail app to synch with her Roadrunner (Time Warner / Spectrum) account, and figure out how a shared calendar works in Android-land, but so far so good.

OK, I'm trying to decide between a Note 8 and OnePlus 5T (I currently have a OnePlus One). I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the Note 8, but I'm q bit concerned about OS updates. Is Samsung a bit better about that now than it has been in the past? If not, is putting a custom ROM on a good/easy alternative?

I just want to chime in and say I had the s8 since launch and the battery is still good/great after 6+ mths of heavy use. Perhaps diminishing returns for the battery will trigger soon but I am happy. Definitely the best phone I've ever owned, bar none.

You have to simply swipe up from the bottom up to make it temporarily appear. Once it's there, you easily have enough time to double tap it again to make it remain fixed in place.

I got the T-Mobile update and forgot to turn off my substratum overlays - ended up having to factory reset my phone :( .

Thankfully I got it all figured out, but man that was a major pain in the ass.

It only shows up after the closing animation starts, where the button flickers in the corner once the animation starts removing the overlay. It's really weird.

Are you using a third party theming engine? Just to be sure, you say you're having an issue that the nav bar appears erratically when you swipe down on the top notification area?

No 3rd party stuff, stock tmobile s8+. Theres no button there when you swipe down from top. Only appears in the recession to the prior screen animation in a weird flicker.

So glad I can turn off the Bixby button through Bixby itself now.

My phone's in my pocket when I'm driving, and connected to my car stereo through bluetooth. Damn bixby button's capable of unlocking the phone when tapped once, and then most of the time while in my pocket, it'd then start playing whatever the most viral YouTube video of the day was, and keep going down the list of recommended videos.

Nah. Don't listen to him.

SwiftKey is dated and has been easily surpassed by the much superior Google Keyboard (Gboard). Download Gboard and thank me later.

lol what, i agree that Gboard has finally cought up to SwiftKey in some areas, but how exactly is it superior let alone makes SwiftKey outdated?

SwiftKey stat tracking itself is brilliant.

Really? Does GBoard have clipboard (saves anything you've copied pasted in the past) and swipe to type too? Because swipe to type is incredible, generally far faster than individual character presses, plus it's great for left handed use too.

How can I remap the Bixby button to activate Google Assistant? Also do you recommend replacing the default apps for camera, texting, etc?
I'm interested in this too. I just bought a Note 8 (it arrives tomorrow), and I have never used a phone without stock/near stock Android.

I'm planning to use Keep, Android Messages, Google Keyboard, Photos, Chrome, Gmail app... the only app from Samsung I want to keep is the camera.

Can I just disable the Samsung duplicates?

I've got the Note 8 and I'm very happy with it. Honestly I really loved my Note 7 before the "voluntary" recalls started getting less and less voluntary (disabling apps on that model, disabling Gear VR on it, banning on planes, capping battery through software updates, etc). I'm glad I could get back into a similar phone a year later.

Side note: I love Magnetic Secure Transmission, too. I've got it on the phone and my Gear S3 smart watch. It blows people's minds when I wave my watch/phone near a legacy magnetic strip reader to pay for something at the store.

Does Gboard finally suggest emojis? For example, I can write haha or lol and SwiftKey recommends one of the laughing emojis which I can tap and replace the word with.

If Gboard cannot do that, I'm never switching. It makes typing so fast and fluid.

Does anybody have some advice for me here? My OPO isn't on it's deathbed, but it's close.

I think similar to the comparison with the Pixel 2 further up (though the 5T has better performance and battery than the Pixel 2), I'd have to give it to the Note 8 by several orders, though as far as I can tell the Note 8 is a fair degree more expensive.

Note 8 has;

+ A much better design, with a better screen to body ratio.
+ A bigger screen.
+ A much better screen in terms of peak brightness, colour accuracy, colour gamut and resolution (1080x2160 vs 1440x2960).
+ HDR10 (already works with Netflix etc) plus 3D Touch.
+ Better performing cameras front and rear despite lower megapixels (bigger sensors and lower aperture on front for improved low light).
+ Dual type cameras (one regular, one zoom), both with optical stabilisation, plus a better portrait mode.
+ Better split screen multitasking and features.
+ A stylus with Wacom screen tech for added productivity.
+ SD card slot for expandable storage.
+ Wireless charging.
+ Waterproofing and dust resistance (5T has neither), so you can comfortably use the Note 8 in the rain or not worry about getting it wet, even using it in a swimming pool.
+ A better internal DAC/Amp, useful if you plan to use a wired earphone or headphone, especially audiophile grade.
+ Compatible with Samsung Gear VR and Dex.
+ Samsung pay (best mobile pay tech yet).

The Oneplus 5T has;

+ A much lower price.
+ Slightly better battery life.
+ Quicker charging.
+ Ever so slightly quicker performance (though both are essentially the two fastest phones on the market).

Really depends on what you're after or what you need. The Note 8 is a better designed and far more feature rich device, whereas the 5T is a more streamlined, affordable power house.

I've had the note 8 for 2 weeks now and the only negative I can find is there is no landscape mode.. not on the homescreen or the lockscreen, so if you use a wireless charging stand and want to listen to music with controls on the lock screen you will struggle.

You can of course not have your screen lock enabled and stay in app, but I prefer not having my workmates seeing I'm listening to the latest from Boyzone an Take That.

Great comparison, thank you. As I can get the Note for less than the OP5T (albeit I have to go onto a 2 year plan), I think this settles it. I'm still a little wary of the OS support though.

Got a Note 8 last Sunday.

It's been 5 years since I've owned a Note device (had a Note 2).

I'm loving this phone. Screen is phenomenal, performance is fast as hell.

Coming from a Moto Z Play, I'm having a hard time adjusting to battery life. I easily got 1.5, sometimes 2 days out of the battery with the Z Play. The Note 8, however, is barely lasting a full day.

I know I could drop the resolution to 1080p and save a lot, but I got this phone mostly for the screen!

Oh, I'm also coming from a Moto Z Play (I'm using it right now). My Note 8 arrives today. A little bit scared about battery life.

How much battery do you have by the end of the day?

Battery life is great. I look at memes, send texts, tweet, and watch some YT during lunch and still get home after my 8 hours with about 17-25% (depending on use) left.

It may be good compared to other phones.. But compared to the Z Play... It's tough.

Let's see how it goes. Right now, I'm carrying my charger around.
