And as I've been trying to point out, that's all down to personal preference.

And those games can be played with pretty good portability on a laptop or windows tablet. It all depends on how people prefer to game.
Yeah switch has an advantage there, I don't think an awful lot of people care too much about playing non demanding indie games and the like at 4k 60fps or higher . Reaching the native resolution at good performance is enough for large number of people and thus being portable is a rather large advantage.

I don't think most people that complain about the quantity of games on Switch actually think there are no games on Switch.

What they're saying is that there aren't very many games that I can't already play on PC/PS4/Xbox that I am actually interested in.

I've felt a little of that because I feel no reason to buy multiplats on Switch, because I'd rather play them on PC or X1X. So, my switch is just used for high quality exclusives that interest me.

I've played some great games on Switch, but there aren't a ton of games that I'm excited to buy on it right now. So, for me, personally, there's a little bit if a drought of switch games. Not that there is an actual lack of games on Switch, there's just a lack of exclusive games I'm personally interested in.
Pretty much sums my up my experience as well.

I'm not saying it doesn't have an advantage, but guess what. Not everyone has the same preferences.

I never said it has anything to do with 4k/60fps either.

There is not single best way to play multiplat games. People will have different preferences.

What we're talking about is that not everyone has the same preferences and people may prefer to play certain games on a platform other than Switch.

Just because a game is on Switch doesn't mean everyone would rather play it there.
No one is arguing that even the person you were originally talking about doesn't seem to be saying that, they're saying a reason why someone would prefer that experience to others.

Then you jumped into this thread in a weird place, my friend. lol.

I'm not saying ALL people would prefer a laptop either.

At this point, I honestly don't even know what point you're trying to make with these comments about not liking using a laptop.

Yet it still feels like there's not much to play on it.

This doesn't really match with my experience. I'm sure the Switch will catch up eventually, but right now I can think of like, 30 really excellent games on the 3DS and maybe 4 on the Switch, which is about right given each console's lifespan. It's possible that I just have weird preferences or that the good Switch games are buried under a mountain of indie shovelware though.

Same. Going by the release date the last major game I bought day one was Odyssey, and that was last year. This year was a massive disappointment so far to me, after a strong first one.

If not for the terrible port of Mercenaries Saga my Switch would be clean of any purchases since last year / January 2018.

That must mean no one in the whole world has done so. Not a single one of the 500k+ owners of the game on PC have ever played it on a laptop, right?
I'm frankly ignorant of PC sales of the game, but I assume most owners have it on steam to play at home like a normal console game with an Xbox controller.

You're trying to argue it's just as convenient/likely /plausible someone is going to lug their Windows tablet or laptop around to play a copy of Hollow Knight outdoors.

I'm sure there are some people who play it on their laptop at home, while in the washroom. Let's hope to god the laptop doesn't fall off their lap .

Sorry, 3DS destroys the Switch in number of quality titles (TO ME). Switch doesn't even have a Pokemon game yet, or Smash, or 2D Mario. And given that the 3DS also plays DS titles, it's not remotely close.
So you're saying that it doesn't, but you just like the 3DS library more. I mean, that's fine but let's not lie about the critical reception of each library.

Just like Steam and the PS4 store, it's loaded up with shovelware and garbage. The Switch has a respectable indie catalog but nobody should be touting the overall number of titles on the store.

I'm talking about the games that generally sell Nintendo devices to Nintendo fans. Nintendo's own games. And the Switch can't touch the 3DS in that regard yet.
What... is this arbitrary goalpost we've moved to? The Switch library in pure volume is on the cusp of passing the 3DS and the volume of critically acclaimed games has already passed it iirc.

Having a preference doesn't mean that (there is no reason to play multiplats on Switch), I can't say that (there is no reason to play multiplats) on PC just because they are available elsewhere or because I prefer playing them on another platform. I've played Inside on Switch for the first time, it is a Switch game to me as much as it is a multi-platform game.

Switch is not a system for exclusives only like many of Nintendo's systems in the past, not with this big and varied library. it can very well be a main system for certain types of players. for indie games, I'd say Switch is the lead platform in the market right now.

and it has been available only for a year and half, it will end up with a huge library with titles of all kinds.

I am not in any way arguing that the same quantity of people would do both.

I'm sure there are some people who would rather own and play the game on their PC, including a laptop, than play it on Switch.

I don't understand how it is hard to fathom that there are people out there with different preferences than yourself.

This is me also. Only in it for the exclusives

Never said there was no reason to play multiplats on switch for anyone anywhere.

Just said some people, like myself, feel no draw to purchase or play multiplats on switch.

Different people have different preferences.

Switch, for me, is an exclusives only platform. Doesn't mean it has to be for everyone.

You guys keep half reading my argument, then arguing something different.

Different people have different preferences. When someone says they can't find anything to play on Switch, that doesn't mean there is nothing to play on switch. That is all.

That goalpost you have a problem with but not the one they used initially that erases the fact that all DS games work on the 3DS? I'm a huge fan of the Switch, but saying the library is remotely close to the 3DS in terms of pure quality is insane. Again, not a single Pokemon game, or Animal Crossing, or Metroid, or Smash.

Again, the question originally which had a higher quality library, and the objective truth is that the Switch has a greater number of critically acclaimed titles than the 3DS while still not have yet passed in in volume of titles.

And I'd argue that's a terrible argument. The 3DS has far more highly rated titles than are available to me on Switch. And it's not even close thanks to VC and DS titles being available on 3DS.

What the libraries means to you or any specific person doesn't matter. What the reality of the situation is, is that the Switch's library has grown to the point of almost passing g the 3DS in volume, and passing it in critically acclaimed titles.

No, it isn't. Stop with the shovelware bullshit.

And ports are valuable as any other. The majority of those never appeared on a Nintendo platform in first place.

Also worth noting Go Vacation kind of bombed. That's the kind of 'shovelware' people referred to back in the day when they try to minimize Wii's software success. Granted games like Go Vacation or Wii ___ weren't even bad games or technically shovelware, but the perception was it wasn't for the 'core' and therefore not worthy of anything but contempt in the online gaming forum 'bubble'.

The indie games and 'ports' finding success on the Switch are 100% core games, and most are well deserved. This is why there is more and more release every week, most are trying to chase after that core market. So his reuse of an old Wii era talking point undermines whatever else he has to say.

People praise the 3DS's library a lot, but Nintendo 1P aside it was pretty poor compared to DS or PSP. Release frequency and genre variety also fell off a cliff. If you didn't like RPGs or MH, there was little to play from 3P after 2013.

A packaged software comparison would also be interesting

Also worth noting Go Vacation kind of bombed.
It's a party game without Mario in the title or Nintendo's 1P pedigree that is also a port of nearly 7yr old game. It wasn't going to set the charts on fire at launch. Performance can't really be judged at all until post holiday.

Except it hasn't unless you blindly ignore VC and DS.

VC on 3DS was pretty awful though it was mostly Nintendo games, which is what VC will be had they tried to launch it on Switch. And we technically already have NeoGeo , Capcom* and will have Sega VC on the Switch, it's just not releasing under the VC banner because 3rd parties figured out it was better releasing and curating their own catalog and not being subject to VC's pricing structure.

For my own curiosity, what data do we have to base this on?

Not on July NDP charts, not on eshop top sellers charts.

Ok ,it was released less than a week before July ended, so it could explain NPD and it may very well sell consistently over the holidays, but It's absence on the eshop chart is the most telling.

I said IMHO. And no, Ports mean shit to me. The Switch is probably the worst console ever made when it comes down to ports. As someone who isn't really interested in the mobile aspect and who owns a big Wii U library, the Switch has not much to offer. And yes, there is quite a bit of shovelware. Just like on Steam, the PSN and Xbox One. Everybody publishes everything on every device nowadays. These numbers mean nothing. I guess Xbox One, PS4 and Steam all have record numbers in published games in the past few years. There is a lot of trash filling up the shops.

Seems like "kinda bombed" is a rather tenuous claim to make, then. I wouldn't expect Go Vacation to be the type of game that shoots to the top of the eShop Charts on release, which is more typical of core-oriented games IMO. If anything, I think the game will do a slow burn to 500,000+, with a continued presence on retail shelves and word-of-mouth among casuals propelling it.

Yeah i'm just pointing out it's not charting at all. Maybe use of the word 'kinda bombed' is harsh? The key point is, the games doing well aren't the usual suspects that riled up the 'hardcore' gamers in the gaming forums before, so the use of shovelware in the context of Switch seems to me to be really disingenous as a criticism of Switch's growing library. It's getting a ton of releases because core games are doing well.

I see there's now an attempt to shift the context to 'ports', but it's just a poor argument I think.

At least the public disagree with it by far. Even more because many of those are Nintendo only consumers.

Switch is already my favorite console ever.

BOTW, Splatoon 2, Odyssey, Kart 8, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are some of my personal favorite games, and the best in their franchises. With Smash, the inevitable Animal Crossing, and Pokemon 2019 coming out, I'll have pretty much all I need on a Nintendo console, with everything else just being bonus.

*turns off Switch*

Is the eshop bad or is it me, I would like to know what to buy but eh.

I don't think you have turned it on in a while, there is both a Featured section and a Top 30 section, both of which could help find great games if you don't know what to buy. Or you could look at the News Feed, which gets recommended games lists for different and varying criteria sent to it every week.

A shame so many of them are practically impossible to find unless you're specifically looking for them.

Anyone know what's the comparison to the Wii library?

Edit: Nevermind its in the OP.

Still, Steam has the most games of any platform but how many of those are worth a damn?

There are tons of games released weekly. The problem is it's rare I want to even put one on my wishlist, let alone buy one. It feels the same as going to the Android play store. In other words, I would feel the same if it had a billion games. Theres just so much trash, IMO. Switch store needs strong filters, suggestion algorithms, and curation at this point like the Steam store. Looking forward to Smash this year and maybe Xeno DLC. Mario Party as a rental.
