Niv-Mizzet 3.0 needs to somehow slot into the middle of the Niv-Mizzet 1.0 and 2.0 combo.
It's new art for 1.0 to be clear. There was also new art for Aurelia.

They come from the Guild Kits, which are not the prerelease packs but rather Duel Decks like products that reprint cards from the previous two Ravnicas.

gemcuttlefish asked: I've got a sneaking suspicion izzet started with flashback in early design, but it was too powerful in conjunction with surveil so the discard clause was added. Accurate at all?

Nope. Izzet has a wackier mechanic that didn't work out.

August 30, 2018

Looks like not!flashback was a late replacement for another mechanic, which explains why they went so safe with its concept.

Yeah, I'm just assuming another Niv-Mizzet will show up for no particular reason. I don't know if he's even still alive in the story to be honest.

He's alive and will likely play a major part in the story. The last we saw Jace, he mentioned he was planning to consult with Niv Mizzet before any of the other guild masters.

They'll put up the decklists of the guild kits a week or two before the release, just like any other precon. They're not coming until November.

Surveil is like scry, so it can go on any card type. Not requiring creatures and being able to see multiple cards at once makes it potentially more powerful. Obviously it all comes down to the specific designs that they use.

I thought the Guild Kits would be released with the release of Guilds to Ravnica, I didn't realize it would be out in November.

Also this tweet answers some of my questions:

How many mechanics did they try lmao

I'll just assume the cards with the Izzet mechanic will be godawful at this point.

It'd be fun if the card you discarded to jumpstart actually affected the spell.

Lightning Spell 1R
Jump Start
Deal 2 damage to any target. If this spell was jumpstarted, deal X damage instead, where X is the converted mana cost of the discarded card.

GP Richmond has been cool to watch, Reid Duke is such a beast. Last round was some of the best Magic I've seen in ages

The effect should obviously be, "Whenever you jump-start a spell, put all permanents from your Dredge deck's library, hand, and graveyard onto the battlefield tapped and attacking."

The Izzet mechanic will obviously be:

If this is the second or greater spell you cast this turn, you may pay 3UR. If you do, create a 4/4 wizard token with flying and vigilance.

We got the promos in the usual blurry ass pic:

From the chat:
Firemind's Research UR
Enchantment
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, put a charge counter on Firemind's Research.
1U, Remove a charge counter from Firemind's Research: Draw a card.
1R, Remove a charge counter from Firemind's Research: Firemind's Research deals ? (2?) damage to any target.
Numbers might be off

I don't have much to say about the cards.

If that counterspell really costs 1UU, then wow.

Dissolve was extremely powerful, surveil is stronger than scry, and Teferi / Azcanta aren't rotating.

We basically have a better Dissolve back in Standard. History has shown that to be a very good card.
Dissolve that helps you flip Search for Azcanta. Absolutely nuts, assuming we're not reading the mana cost incorrectly.

like, wasn't there a whole bunch of discourse about Dissolve being too strong for standard? weird as hell to see this printed.

I honestly expected that Surveil counter. Felt like low hanging fruit.

I want to see non-blurry verions (I guess later tonight) but a positive first impression so far. Hoping hybrid cards are back.

Dissolve was *fine* not overpowered. Let's not exaggerate :P

What is the Blue/White Control shell actually losing that isn't relatively generic and likely to be replaced easily? Just Torrential Gearhulk?

I feel like as a Control player you're probably proper chuffed to trade Gearhulk and a couple of generic cards with block mechanics stapled on in exchange for Mono Red getting completely eviscerated.

Wizards will be showing off cards at PAX West in a bit less than an hour. But because budget I guess, they aren't streaming it, and will instead live tweet it. Look, I get that the Kaladesh display was pretty over the top, but surely there's a middle ground.

Oh hold on,

They won't be tweeting information from the PAX panel until two hours from now.

... How does this make any sense at all?

EDIT: Gerry Thompson has us covered.

actually kind of surprised they brought back shocklands but i guess it not that shocking
We did a predictions thing at our LGS and me and 1 other guy out about 40 predicted Shock Lands are coming back. I thought it was obvious (as will the next 5 be in the next set) but people are stuck in their (THEY ARE TOO OP IN STANDARD) ways even though they are far from OP.

Doing Shock/Check manabases again is a bit of a surprise given how oppressive Farseek+ Checks/Shocks was last time.

The final set of the block will have a novel that you have to pay for again. They stopped doing this before because people just didn't pay attention to the story, but I suppose they figure they have enough investment in the story to try the paid model again.

EDIT: Wait, it just hit me. The author is Greg Weisman. As in Gargoyles / Spectacular Spider-Man / Young Justice Greg Weisman!

This is looking better than the Dominaria pre-release hype train. Thank fuck I didn't buy Steam vents last week I was banking on shock lands reprints, I don't think it will go down much as it's in Standard.

Legion Warboss is a fantastic addition to Modern Goblins. It also synergize well with Legion Loyalist.

I literally had another playset of 4 each sitting in my cart earlier today since i am currently using all my current ones in my EDH decks and need more for some i am working on now.

So is the story that Dimir is allying with Golgari and Izzet against Boros and Selesnya (with others guilds' loyalties TBD)? 'Cause it'd be weird if the Dimir mechanic enables Golgari's and Izzet's if that's not a synergy in the story as well...

From what I can tell from the panel information, Dimir will actually be "good guys", in that they're opposed to Bolas's interloping.

How does that card compare to Goblin Rabblemaster? They feel pretty similar, but my instinct says Rabblemaster is better.

My evaluation is that Rabblemaster is better for raw damage (and thus overall given the types of decks it sees play in) but Warboss is less risky since its not going to force as many goblins to suicide at a potentially inopportune time. Of course, only the later will be in Standard :P

That lich is pretty spicy and I'm totally going to use him to mill myself into oblivion in a Gitrog deck or something.
