Some obscure underrated but amazing eShop games:
- 'Dragon Fang Z' - It's like 'Shiren the Wanderer' (or 'Pokemon Mystery Dungeon') on fucking steroids. And the best Japanese roguelike released in the last two years.
- 'ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun': An orgy of psychedelia and flashing lights, you can think in 'Super Meat Boy' meets 'Hotline Miami'.
- 'Don't Die Mr. Robot DX': The spiritual successor to 'Every Extend Extra' in PSP. A score attack masterpiece, also including a juicy single player mode with tons of missions and a real sense of progression. Don't let the screenshots fool you.
- 'Membrane' - A physical based puzzle, you can think in 'World of Goo' with a platformer layout, and most importantly, a "sandbox" design: every level can have various creative solutions.
- 'Detention': Even if you're not into survival horrors, this game will captivate your imagination with its depth story. I think that it's the best narrative game currently available in Switch.
- 'Spelunker Party': A great Japanese 2D platformer, taking some elements from an early 80s obscure kusoge game infamous by its difficulty. But that was used in a contemporary way to create a charming and unforgettable title packed with content, tons of levels and even an online mode for playing together with other 3 friends.
- 'Levels+ : Addictive Puzzle': A favorite in these threads, don't let the screenshots fool you. While it may seem similar to 'Threes', it uses some elements of this formula greatly improving this with some strategy elements and a brilliant scoring system. It has online leaderboards, and it's a really addictive experience trying to improve your score.
- 'Ambition of the Slimes': The two best turn based strategy games have been released this year in Switch, that is. 'Into the Breach' and 'Ambition of the Slimes'.
- 'Arcade Archives: Star Force': The best and most influential shmup ever made. Only underrated outside of Japan, thought. In its home country, it was a game as popular as 'Dragon Quest' or 'Super Mario Bros' back in the day, and one of the most successful titles in the history of Japanese arcades. With a really amazing and catchy soundtrack.
I tend to play a lot of obscure games, and I always enjoy discovering new things, or giving opportunities to less know titles, so there are a lot of games that I can recommend. But I find this selection highly enjoyable for a broad range of the public.
And I'm also making the assumption that you have already played to death 'Toki Tori 2+' and 'VOEZ', which are two of the essential titles in the system.
Can anyone vouch for "Neurovoider". It's been on my mind for the past few days and i am quite the twin stck shooter nut.
I really like Neurovoider! It's a rogue-like that is somewhat similar to Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon (though not quite as good as either). Also, Neurovoider has very fun co-op, multiple difficulty levels and daily runs you can do.
Celeste has different stages with simpler single-screen challenges instead, so each stage has many easier screens with a few harder ones that are more comparable to SMB's.How does Celeste compare in difficulty to Super Meat Boy? I completed every single "normal" level in meat boy except for the final boss/level, that one is way too difficult to me.
Thanks, that's good to know. I want a challenge, but not to be too frustrated to enjoy the game.Celeste has different stages with simpler single-screen challenges instead, so each stage has many easier screens with a few harder ones that are more comparable to SMB's.
Space Harrier is the next game to be confirmed for Sega Ages.
I mean, I guess I should've seen that coming, but also I was kinda hoping for not so obvious choices.
I'm starting to expect most, if not all the 3D Classics to appear on Switch, but considering I've played a few of these a lot thanks to the Yakuza games & hearing that they were going to include games that've never been re-released until now, I'm more interested in seeing what the new rereleases will be.I'm okay with this. Especially if it's an indication we might get Outrun.
Damn, my poor soul is weak, so after 'Alpha Mission II' don't clicking on me, it's one of the most technical and with more complex mechanics shmups that I have played in years, and I play A LOT of shmups, I have purchased 'Arcade Archives: Argus'.
And how amazing is Hamster, they have vastly improved its emulation and options since the first releases in the ACA Neo Geo collection.
Now, for the auto-fire option, you can choose a ratio of velocity, using a separated button for the auto-fire, and most importantly, the auto-fire is disabled when you are entering your name in the ranking.
I think that this is the first time that I play 'Argus' with a real effective auto-fire option that simply, is taking into account the exact timing and limit in your inputs to make you constantly fire with a quick rate, it feels so good. It's making the game much more enjoyable and less unforgiving.

If anything, I'd love to see sequels like Planet Harrier, Space Harrier 2, Outrunners, etc. get some spot light & let me try out other entries in classic Sega franchises.
Though for the love of god, if they finally port Sonic 3 & Knuckles and add the Drop Dash, I will instantly buy it.
Now THAT'S a game I wish would get re-released, even if most people say it's not that good. I'd like to actually try it out, maybe go the extra mile of adding Sonic & Tails as being playable to go with the whole Sonic Crackers/Stadium prototype.I'll gladly pay the full $60 retail price for a competent portable version of S3&K. That's how badly I want it. I've waited so long, it has to happen eventually.
I also desperately need a Knuckles' Chaotix port. The 32X can't hold it hostage forever...
I've never bought an Arcade Archives release. Are the options and emulation in that series generally better than the Neo Geo series overall? You say "vastly improved" so I'm just wondering if there are certain Neo Geo games to avoid if they don't run that well.
I'd pass.
Dark Souls Remastered has a release date, October 19. Was this known or new news??

For those who played and beat Gone Home, I do have a question.Does the game imply the home is haunted by Oscar? (the uncle who died and left the estate to your family). I noticed noises or doors trying to open and whatnot randomly a few times while playing and later on it shows Sam and Lonnie conducted a ouija board session where Oscar communicated with them. If so I thought it was a cool touch and gave the game an almost slight horror aspect to it.
Beat Hyper Light Drifter and Gone Home.
HLD was freakin fantastic. It was way more challenging then I thought it would be, too. Some of the bosses gave me some Dark Souls nightmares. Loved the style and music, almost gave me some Destiny vibes with the look in certain areas. Highly recommended everyone give this a download.
Gone Home I'm a little less positive about. It was okay, but it doesn't compare to another game that's similar called What Remains of Edith Finch which was so, so much better, IMO. Still, it was kinda cool to walk around a spooky mansion and explore and unravel the game's narrative. I'd probably wait on a sale if you're on the fence.

Is there a database that you're pulling these from? I'd love to find out!
I've heard Banner Saga games add a discount once you have purchased one of the Trilogy's installments. Can anyone confirm? And what's the discount percentage? (need % not $ because I use the Mexican eShop) I'm trying to compare prices with the physical "bundle" release.
Thabks for the input. How's the performance of both games on handheld mode?
Yes there is a discount at least In Europe. It is 25% off for the second game and 40% off for third if you own the previous two. It is described In the eshop so you should check there.
Any more info on Arena of Valor's release date? Is it still slated for this month? Can't seem to find any updated info on it.
All the Neo Geo games run perfectly, but it's a question of improving the options and the UI.
An example is how the High Score mode works. In the early releases if you start the High Score mode, you need to insert a coin, and then push the start button. If there are various modes, like in 'Magical Drop 3', it will only count for the rank if you select the supposed mode for scoring, so it's very confusing.
While in the new releases, if you select High Score mode, the game will take you directly to the start of the game, without even inserting a coin and without showing the introduction screen.
Other example is how the auto-fire works. For example, in 'Aero Fighters 2', you can activate the auto-fire option in your main shoot from the menu.
But if you do this, the auto-fire will be still active when you need to introduce your name at the end of a credit. So if you try to select a letter, it will detect three button inputs, introducing the same letter in the ranking. The same things happens in 'Zed Blade', but in the initial menu, trying to configure the setup of your ship, it's a hellish experience with the auto-fire activated.
You can't configure separated buttons for auto-fire. Normally, in shmups you want to have a button with the default firing option in some games requiring to do only accurate shoots, and you want other button with auto-fire for the more convoluted parts.
And most importantly, how the auto-fire is configured and synced is one of the most important features, let's say that this is a Quality Of Life improvement for advanced shmup players.
For example, in 'Star Force', there is a simple auto-fire option in the menu. But it's not synchronized with the maximum inputs of the game. So it's very hard to create quick bursts of fire.
In 'Argus', you can configure three velocities. You can even select different buttons with different velocities. And most importantly, the auto-fire is synced with the maximum inputs accepted by the game. So you will have a fast-paced and rapid fire that will make the game much more easy, without destroying your finger through a rapid button press.
I think that all these improvements in 'Argus', including advanced options that for example, are only included in some builds of MAME centered in emulating shmups with QOL features, it's a testament of the effort of Hamster to create arcade ports appealing to the most advanced users.
I also need to say that this version of 'Argus' has a much better emulated sound driver that any MAME build that I have played in the past. The music has a much more warm timbre, it's not as strident.
It's completely changing my perception of the game, one of the things that I disliked about 'Argus' was how strident was the sound.
Now THAT'S a game I wish would get re-released, even if most people say it's not that good. I'd like to actually try it out, maybe go the extra mile of adding Sonic & Tails as being playable to go with the whole Sonic Crackers/Stadium prototype.

Someone on Reddit (maybe it's you?) posted about it.So I've been playing the Switch version for a couple hours and uh...it's starting to drive me crazy.
Note: All screenshots are from the normal difficulty setting. Also, here's a link to the youtube superplay I'm going to occasionally reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvFGoNxYFQE
I'm not 100% sure, but I'm getting the sinking feeling that random bullets will occasionally break away from their respective spreads and just do their own thing.
I'll have to do some more testing.
Whatever the case, I'd probably hold off on purchasing the Switch version.

Finally sat down and learned how to play Picross after all these years and yeah, now I get why these games are so damn good.
Been playing Picross S all day despite having Spider-Man and Dragon Quest to play.
Have you ever looked into the Toki Tori series? They are incredible games that will definitely challenge you and fun to play. Not gonna lie, I'm clamoring for a good puzzle game on Switch. I already have Lumines Remastered which is fun, but I'm looking to buy either The Gardens Between, Baba is You or Treasure Stack as the next puzzle game to get. I might buy two of them but looking forward to reviews of all (Gardens Between is this month) to see how they are.
