Somewhere. I think.
Nintendo just announced that the long-awaited Ver. 6.0.0 firmware update will be out on September 18th (North America) / September 19th (Europe, Japan):

- Europe: 2AM
- UK: 1AM
- NA (ET): 8PM
- NA (PT): 5PM)
- Japan: 9AM

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/41815

Important: after installing the update, you will no longer be able to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user, so do that before the update is out if you need to. This is done presumably so that you can't clone your save data by using several profiles and downloading your cloud save data to them.

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/41815

For the record, that does NOT mean you cannot unlink your account from the system, you'll still be able to do that (if you get a new console, lose or get your current one stolen, damaged, etc.).

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22434

Things that will not change:

- you will still be able to transfer your account using system transfer
- you will still be able to use a Nintendo Account across several Nintendo Switch consoles, but as always, you will only be able to have one active console
- you will still be able to switch regions on your Nintendo Account
- you won't have to call Nintendo Support to transfer anything unless your console broke down or was stolen)

The NSO subs will go live on the eShop after maintenance that starts right when update is out, and should last 3h. Ver. 6.0.0 required to access eShop, as expected.

Nintendo has like 6 different online account systems running in parallel currently which is a mess. Hopefully the update points to some consolidation.

Am I crazy or can I see no mention of 6.0.0 in any of those articles?

You are crazy ;)

Nintendo Switch system update version 6.0.0 has been scheduled for September 18th, 2018 (Tuesday) at 5pm Pacific Time. After this system update is released, Nintendo eShop will be under maintenance for a brief period of time. Nintendo eShop will not be accessible during the maintenance window below. We apologize for the inconvenience.

No they do not. They have Nintendo Account (the current one for Switch/mobile) and NNID (the legacy one for 3DS/Wii U). That is two. You can link your Nintendo Account to your NNID so you can share your wallet between Switch and 3DS/Wii U.

There's only two account systems though. Nintendo Network for WiiU/3DS which no one barely cares for, and then Nintendo Account which is the main one. It's not that hard to mess with...

I don't think they do. They only have one and then the older 3DS system which they made compatible with the new one

Made it compatible but both still exist.

Let's see.

Switch user account.
My Nintendo account
Nintendo username
nnid

That's 4. It should be ONE.

There has to be more to the "Cannot unlink the account from Switch user" thing. No way they'd regress back to the, "Welp, sucks to be you for your digital software if your system breaks."

MyNintendo is a reward service for your Nintendo Account not a separate account. A Switch user is not an online account either.

Nintendo has only ever had two online account systems. Nintendo Account and NNID.

One step forward, two steps back. Seriously, what's the point of this? So if I lose my Switch or somehow lose my data and I don't save cloud backup, I'm boned out of my account? I haven't turned on my Switch in a while, so maybe I'm misremembering how the user system works.

I have no clue anymore what my nnid and NIntendo username are tbh, or their passwords. I hope I don't need those for the Pokebank shit I need to do when the 2019 Switch game launches.

Although I think this means, for example, that if your main Switch account is linked to one Nintendo Account, you can't switch it to another account that could be from another region, I really don't see the benefit in doing that anyway?? Could someone please enlighten me what is being lost?

Chill. All it means is that if you link a Nintendo Online account to a local user, you can't unlink it. Not that you can't unlink an account from a system.

May be to combat piracy? Otherwise I don't understand as well.

Where did this unlink thing come from? What's the logic behind it?

This is to prevent save game-duping with multiple profiles.

Imagine you have two profiles on your Switch. You connect your online ID to profile A, sync your save from the cloud to the device, then unlink the online account and relink it to profile B, sync the saves again, now you have two separate profiles with the same saves and basically duped everything.

This is to prevent that.

You can move your account to any Switch but you have to deactivate it on the current switch before doing so. All this does is permanently link you User to it's Nintendo account. I didn't even realize it could be removed before . This is probably so you cannot give your online account to another user so you can sort of share it.

It is, the same login used on Nintendo Account as MyNintendo because they are the exact same thing. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Ok. I just checked and it does seem that at least Nintendo account and My Nintendo have been consolidated. It wasn't always the case.

That still leaves:

Nnid
Switch user account
My Nintendo/Nintendo account

Ah, OK. Thanks for the clarification.

False. They were always the same thing from day one. You have no idea what you are talking about. Switch users are not online accounts. They exist separately so that someone can use a Switch without having to sign up to Nintendo's online shit. (I can't say for sure right now but surely PS4/Xbox One allow users to create profiles without an online account.)

Also as I said before NNID is a legacy platform for 3DS/Wii U. Unless you use one of those NNID is completely irrelevant.
