I received the above email from Nintendo earlier today. What caught my eye was that classic titles will feature enhancements such as 'HD resolution'.

I don't think I've seen this reported anywhere, although I can't imagine we'll see the benefits of this until Nintendo 64 and Gamecube games start appearing in the future.

From what I understand, classic games on Nintendo's first HD system, the Wii U, ran at the original non HD native resolution.

Could we eventually see official 1080p versions of Super Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Bros Melee?

Hoping this means they have strong scaling in place and the filter options are sufficient. Would kill for a decent scanline filter w/brightness adjustment but if not I'll gladly take a sharp integer scale. Also vibrant colours please D:

Also wonder how they'll handle aspect ratio, given that NES (and SNES) doesn't use square pixels for 4:3

Ideally, they'll have options for either of these ratios with interpolation to smooth over 4:3 horizontal scrolling like on SNES Mini

Dat 4K Mario 1-1 stage....

No joke, 4k is amazing for retro game emulation! A good scanline filter can really shine at the breathing room of that resolution. Even if you just do a clean non-filtered image, the scaling ends up being razor sharp thanks to pixel density + 4k being a perfect integer scale of 240p. Of course you can still achieve good results at 720 or 1080p, though compromises will have to be made one way or the other.

HD, Filters, and Save States? Yeah this has to be running on skme custom emulation software, I am slightly impressed. Didn't they nab a big name from the emulation community to work with N.E.R.D for the mini classics for this exact purpose? I know a lot are down on this service, but if they are getting work done for the service to run everything at a native resolution, its obvious more work than the Virtual zconsole is being done, and some day dozens if not hundreds of classic titles will be available for free any time you want from multiple Nintendo Platforms.

NES and SNES classic are the most useful reference point, more than prior VC services. they had pixel perfect etc options.

Probably 720p 1:1 pixels like the NES Classic. In fact, I'd assume this is just a straight port of kachikachi to the Switch. Which is a fantastic emulator.

Aye, the most likely point of comparison. I'm glad they seem to be open to letting the user customise the emulation a bit more these days, previous Virtual Consoles were so restrictive. Forcing that imperfect 4:3 image on 3DS NES VC for one, blegh.

I'd be happy with the Classic's feature set (especially the improved 4:3 from SNES Mini), though I'd hope we can get a sharp scanline filter without the composite style blurring

I think we will in time but the twist will be that you have to pay more.

NES and SNES will come under the standard fee.
If anything, NES-N64 alongside the GB/GBC for the standard 20.00 per year price, while GCN-Wii alongside the GBA/DS for 30.00 per year. Either way, getting everything to native resolution is basically Nintendo Netflix with the GCN/Wii side verging into modern remastering practices as an added bonus.

The games could run in 16k resolution for all i care, doesn't stop the service from being dumpster fire.

I bet it's just upscaled to 720p or whatever.
Meanwhile there are PC NES emulators that support texture packs for NES games. They look really nice too:

While I know what it means, it feels weird to see a game with pixels big enough for me to cut my finger on to be called HD

It is Year 2030, Nintendo just announced a remake of Super Mario 64 HD, and also a remake of Red Steel on their new console with POWERFUL HD GRAPHICS.
I thought 4k was a thing.

Hope this means it also eliminates sprite flickering, slowdown and than weird vertical line on the left\right side of Super Mario Bros 3.

Wait, games other than nes games are coming?, I didnt know that :O

From the update leak we know that there are at the very least Snes games planned to come, since there is an icon for Snes controllers, which will most likely release in the same fashion as the wireless NES-cons.

From that and the fact that the service is called "NES-Nintendo Switch Online" people have irc begun speculating that there might be a "SNES-Nintendo Switch Online" component down the line.

That's why vc is dead, Nintendo will continuously improve the ecosystem and with the longevity they have planned for switch, there's plenty of opportunity to give each retro system it's time to shine.

This is false. The nes controller icons were LITERAL nes controllers to the point the icon for the 2p famicon controller was different from the 1p controller. What people call the snes controller looks more like the Wii classic controller without the stivks. The shape is not a match and there is no "circle" in the button area

It's all about the input lag. If it's as bad as VC NES games were on the Wii-U, I won't be able to handle it.

I still think there needs to be more of an effort of porting old games to modern consoles and not emulating them.

As in port them with the same mechanics, fix some bugs, add some QOL improvements, and make them widescreen. Similar to Christian Whitehead's Sonic games.

Given that it's Nintendo it wouldn't surprise me if the NES games have terrible emulation inferior to the NES classics one, less options etc.
