In response to accusations from tabloids that Bert and Ernie were written as gay characters (and the previous threads on that were locked as a result, but a legit response is newsworthy).

I always thought they were just best friends who lived at the same apartment. Yknow, flat mates?

I never got the impression when I was a kid that they were together, but maybe that just flew over my head somehow?

Depicting them as gay is the least horrific thing that the internet has done to Bert and Ernie.

I had nightmares about the Cookie Monster as a kid. He would tickle me to death. Then one day, I dreamed that I killed him in my grandma's basement and I never had another nightmare about him again.

I guess this confirms that Muppets don't have free will, I'd heard stories about some rebelling against their puppeteers and trying to gain independence, but they must have been misleading. I had always assumed that they possessed minds on par with our own, but perhaps their level of intelligence and agency is on a totally different level.

Like...

I get that they don't wanna take a side, but didn't they recently introduce an autistic muppet? The whole "they're just puppets" thing rings pretty hollow when they're willing to tackle some issues but not others.

It's incredibly fucked that they put out this statement. There is no way that they were under enough pressure that they had to make a comment, and in no way is anyone believing they are gay a meaningful infringement/damage to their IP. They gain nothing from this except hurting some people that admire that implicit homosexual representation.

don't they, like, sleep in the same bed? And aren't there other straight puppets in the sesame street universe who date?

Miss Piggy was, as far as I know, not a Sesame Street character. There's confusion because of Kermit's double role on The Muppets and Sesame Street, but I don't think the Miss Piggy/Kermit relationship is ever discussed on Sesame Street.

Regardless, it's a moot point, as Sesame Workshop hasn't had anything to do with the Muppets in well over a decade. The Muppets are owned by Disney.

For those who aren't aware, the original article - https://www.queerty.com/exclusive-b...er-20180916/amp#click=https://t.co/ZI0rollG2A
It's actually really sweet, because the writer who confirmed it is basically like "yeah their relationship was based on my own relationship with my partner". Even if shipping isn't your thing, it's a beautiful thing of self expression imo.
So it's fucked up that someone else felt the need to stamp on it like this.

Two gay puppets being together is not stranger than a frog and a pig being an item.

So, Kermit exists in both the Muppets-verse and Sesame Street-verse? Or, are his Sesame Street appearances non-canon?

There's also grundgetta who is Oscar the Grouch's girlfriend, but I don't think she has appeared in years.

So someone makes some fanfic that Bert & Ernie are gay. If they deny it they get accused of homophobia. Perfect setup.

Right, I'm saying I think that people are getting confused and thinking that Miss Piggy and Kermit have been on Sesame Street together, and shown a straight romantic relationship on that show between puppets. If that had been the case, the tweet would make sense.

It's a reasonable thing to get confused about because Kermit's on both shows, but I think they've been consistent that the puppets on Sesame Street don't really have romantic relationships.

I don't think any of the puppets date on Sesame Street.

Well, the problem is that nuance is usually lost in these sorts of discussions. I agree that the sentiment was sweet, but that's one writer's view and how he wrote them, but even though he was clearly talking about his own writing and inspiration for that writing, this gets reported as "writer confirms Bert and Ernie are gay!" which is really not what he said. The problem is that people will read it and think canonically that's how they are, which would be odd only because none of the other puppets on the show date or have a romantic relationship.
