Despite the aggressive language, the tweet was not a threat. I can't remember exactly what the context of the banter with Dascu (who posts here), but given the Mercury Steam tag in it was something along the lines of me sending my regards to the dev team for their superb work on Metroid: Samus Returns along with my hopes for a sequel. And Dascu replying with something along the lines of "You'll get Other M 2" or whatever (I actually think the it was something completely different, but along the same wavelength of suggesting a title I'd knowingly detest), and me bantering back with a faux threat of murder.

This post was made...god knows how long ago. Months. It's not even in the ballpark of recent. Could even be close to if not a year ago, given Samus Returns is about that old. But yeah, it was either dug up and reported, or Twitter's dumbass algorithm has flagged it as a threat without context and nuked my account.

I've put through an appeal, because there's no timed temporary suspension noted on my account. It's just flat out flushed. Anybody else had this happen and what the odds are on a successful appeal?

Deplatforming wo.... oh.

that sucks. Twitter mods can't handle context. probably because they have to hit quotas per hour.

In this day and age of people being hit by death threats over the dumbest thing (especially women), that joke tweet is in really poor taste.
Maybe promise them you won't do it again (and maybe cut down a bit on the eating children bit), and they might look the other way.

This is what happens with AI algorithms handling bans and suspensions. They can't understand banter between people who know each other. To be honest the internet just isn't the place to be telling jokes or chatting shit with friends, at least not in public. Stick to discord, whatsapp or wherever else. If your twitter isn't private, it's public, millennial internet education 101.

I am looking forward to lots of posters telling you, you shouldn't be sending death threats on Twitter. No joking about allowed, but to be honest, you should be aware of how algorithms work on these services and how if someone reports a post like that or it gets picked up by AI scanning, it's going to be a ban because the software thinks it's a legit threat.

It's banter between two friends. Context matters.

There's also a third party. But even if there wasn't, you don't really expect the Twitter algorithm or anyone reporting it to be psychic and predict that these two were friends and it was just a joke?

With that being impossible that only leaves the option of avoiding using threats as a joke on a public platform, especially one so enormous that you're nothing but another number.

No, but you'd think there might be an extra layer of human review if both accounts are following each other.

Oh so that's why I couldn't see your hot takes! How you been suspended for? This seems like a really long ban. Maybe in the appeal process get Dascu to back you up? I think the issue is that the threat wasn't perceived as a joke when the game developer was tagged, so next time just @ your friend who probably won't report you. But still it's all public so not a good idea in the first place :P

Honestly given the scope I'd figure that's a luxury reserved for public figures, celebrities, politicians etc. Considering how many reports must come in a day I'd think us normies get treated to an algorithm and only get looked over by a person when contested.

I think the most important lesson here is not to kill Dascu. At least not until he's finished his game.

Context matters but it's important to also remember that tweets are public, it isn't group chat where you can say that stuff in jest.

Seems clear someone went back and reported it though since it was from months ago.

Yup, pretty cut and dry. I thought it would be something kind of vague, or something they really read into, but it's just straight up a death threat no matter the intent behind it. Just deal, I guess.

See that's why I don't even say shit like that jokingly. It's not worth it. Keep that banter private and in person IMO. Also this is a prime opportunity for you to delete Twitter. Everyone else should probably follow suit. In fact, delete the entire platform kthx.

Twitter is not private unless you DM. This tweet also doens't look like friendly banter on it's own.

Let's say we had a threat on Era discussing Internet outrage at this developer. And someone links to your tweet (and from others) and you were not semi-known on Era here?

What would be the most likely response?

a) Oh those jokers! Everyone knows they don't mean it.
or
b) fucking gamers, manbabies, etc.

I got a ban a few hours ago after a lunatic right wing nutjob started his shit to me. I told him his twitter feed was 1 step away from the mind of a spree killer/incel. Full of offensive racist nutbag shit.

Banned for 24 hours.

Come on. How are we in late 2018 and you don't think a tweet like that won't get you in trouble?

I see people like Abby Russel from Giant Bomb think tweets like that will work out. It's mind-boggling.

Bad tweet. Definitely deserves the ban just to encourage you to not make such poor jokes. I'm sure your username didn't help at all, though. You realize how your username and that tweet make you appear?

When I was 13, I got a perma ban on some board because I wrote something similar, addressing my best friend, who had written something about forcing me to eat something really awful. Completely deserved ban despite my intentions and despite my friend correctly interpreting the post as not serious.
Basically, think about what your posts look like with the incredibly limited context strangers have.

Is the suspension permanent? That'd suck.

Also: better they ban too much (i.e. joke posts in bad faith or taste) then not enough.
