So Sony set a first party software launch record in April..... and broke it just a few months later? That is mindboggling lol.

Good on Sony and Insomniac. I don't own a PS4, but of all their exclusives to release this generation, this is the one I wish I could play.

Word of mouth matters more than ever. People heard it was actually good.

Not exactly, its the fact that Spider-Man was unmistakably a AAA blockbuster to the average consumer and that made a huge amount of people want to play it. No other Spidey game has ever come close to rivaling a Spider-Man film like this one, the quality could be seen in every showing and ad.

Are these 'I expected more' posts serious?

Insomniac games has one of the biggest commercial hits of all time on their hands.
Their last big new console exclusive IP (Sunset Overdrive) probably struggled to hit >1mil lifetime and here they managed to pull off an evergreen title from freaking scratch.
It's unreal how much they knocked this one out of the park. The Spider-Man IP alone doesn't remotely ensure success, but all their talent and hard work paid off.

Congrats to Insomniac on the record-breaking sales. By the way is this normal in gaming?

So much for requiring 90+ Metacritic score. Insomniac + Sony have always been an amazing match and this is the culmination of the decades worth of strong partnership. Incredibly fun game and deserves the sales, I'm prolonging the ending because I don't want it to end.

It was beating GoW numbers in the UK and Japan by around double. I think that's why people expected more. They are not trying to downplay the incredible success.

Just for reference, Sunset Overdrive was rumoured to have sold about 320,000 copies in its first 3 weeks on sales.

I don't think Sony will be looking at more Marvel games but you can bet other publishers will be giving it some thought now.

Wouldn't mind another Punisher game from Volition.

Just having a Marvel game doesn't mean success. It's a combination of Insomniac, Sony marketing and the Marvel license that made this a runaway hit.

In the video below, Sciurus clears up any misconceptions regarding the Marvel & Sony partnership and sheds some light on what to expect from them in the near future. Again, I'd categorize this as a rumor and please take it with a grain of salt until official details are released of course.

This video has false information. It states that Marvel approached Sony to create a Spider-Man game which isn't true and has been debunked several times.

This record is even more amazing considering that it has an 87 on Metacritic. Great score but usually you will hear high 90s games selling this fast. Really amazing success all around.

They told it was big far the gamw with the biggest budget they had and they receive support and expertise of Sony in for cinematic single player game.

That's a lot of copies sold...

Man, I'm trying to imagine an X-men game with the same care and polish and story quality.

I honestly don't see Last of Us outselling this. Spiderman might be an evergreen title. Congrats to Insomniac games. So proud of your success :)

It was beating GoW numbers in the UK and Japan by like double. I think that's why people expected more. They are not trying to downplay the incredible success.
Not to mention, we had months of everyone claiming it was going to handily beat God of War sales and possibly double them, but it's selling in the same range essentially. These are great numbers, but a lot of people were claiming it was going to do far more than this when the fan hysteria was at its peak.

It's going to be really interesting to see how Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima do. I doubt they hit these peaks, but if they both end up reaching beyond 5 million in their lifetime, I think Playstation is likely in the process of setting a higher baseline than before for its big exclusives thanks to the success of the PS4 as well as the consistency of their investment in first parties since the PS3 days. I think we're just seeing the stars align and everything just paying off now for them.

The only guaranteed big hit incoming at the moment is The Last of Us Part II. Everything else is up in the air.

Don't want to derail the thread but FH3 is not on Xbox Gamepass and has not had free trials, not sure if they count Demo( I think not) and I trust Ralph Fulton. So, 10 Million copies is not exaggerated.
If we're going by these metrics you may as well add GT Sport to the list as it's already over 6m players and has been on the market a year less than FH3. Also unlikely to be a sequel this gen.

Not to mention, we had months of everyone claiming it was going to handily beat God of War sales and possibly double them, but it's selling in the same range essentially. These are great numbers, but a lot of people were claiming it was going to do far more than this when the fan hysteria was at its peak.
It's 3 Days of sales. We already have enough data from the following week or two in major markets to know Spider-Man is going handily outsell God of War. Maybe not double, but 50% higher seems reasonable.

Right, I mean, this is kind of the endemic issue a lot of AAA publishers face.

Generally AAA games take like 200+ people and 3 or so years, so if you want to make something new, you either need to hire a ton of staff (which is hard in the current environment, there's a shortage of AAA staff to go around, especially at the mid and especially senior level), or you have to stop making something else in order to make something new. This is what, for example, Deus Ex fell victim to, since it pulled the shortest straw when it came to wanting to make The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Tomb Raider, and Deus Ex, but only having the capacity for three (or, as standards go up, possibly only two) games.

Now, it probably doesn't make sense to throw The Last of Us, God of War, or Horizon in the garbage given they're hugely successful series, so that limits a lot of things on that front. Their new studio is rumored to be trying to pick up Uncharted where that left off, so I'm guessing they will stay the course too. Guerrilla is aggressively expanding, so there's potential there to try another project there, though I'm not sure if they're already doing something else on that front given who they've been hiring (a lot of FPS people mostly, though I guess you could have a Marvel FPS).

This is why I threw Sony Bend on the table in the event the thing does somewhere south of 5 million units, since you would expect a high end Marvel game to do more than that. If Days Gone does go over really well, that limits options there however.

There is always working with other independent studios though, like Insomniac, but we'd still need to try to figure out which ones.
Avalanche studios, remedy, ioi and obsidian are probably options for the future. I doubt any of them are working on marvel properties currently though. Marvel games did visit Ssm after god of war released so not sure if something happens there. I mean why would marvel games visit Sony Santa Monica unless they want to discuss a possibility of working together.
