any thoughts on Wasteland 2 so far? considering that among a huge list of other games for this weekend... I've never had so many games I've wanted to play at once. Ikaruga is one of them for sure.

Sorry, had no chance to play it yet. Not will I for a while. Not far into YS VIII.

Refrain is odd considering the demo icon has the name on there, why remove it...

It has a demo? Which region?

Damn, wasn't prepared to see 50% off Binding of Isaac when I got the eShop.

Ikaruga for $10 also, sheeeiiiit.

And that's along with the tempting $20 sale for DragonFangZ.

I guess I gotta go with BOI if nothing else, $20 saved vs $5.

I was also curious about Ittle Dew 2

Binding of isaac half off...does it ever get cheaper than this? Thinking of picking it up.
It's never been anywhere close to 50% off before.

The last sale was in April for $31.99

Please tell me there's a thread for the Dark Souls network test.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/da...ork-test-switch-available-in-eshop-now.69422/

I played earlier today and it was awful. Lots of frame drops and stuttering. Apparently the most recent test had better performance though. The test I played was for Japan, which might explain the bad performance, as I'm in the US.

The worst aspect of this port though is the audio. It's compressed and sounds dreadful. It's the worst audio compression I've ever heard in a modern game. Hopefully the full releases fixes this, otherwise I'm not buying.

How did two player mode work in Excitebike V-System? The page says this mode isn't included. I wonder why.
Pretty sure that was done with two Nintendo Vs. System arcade cabinets side-by-side.

I suppose they could've replicated it two two Switches for local multiplayer, but maybe it wasn't seen as a priority.

That would help to explain the oddly small file size.

I'm really wary of this port given how hush-hush they've been about the delay and the release. The network test app seemed to just slip onto the eShop quietly.

Apparently the last gen versions are also under 4 gb, so it's kind of ridiculous the sound quality is this poor. It legitimately makes the Switch version of the game the worst way one can play Dark Souls (assuming the poor audio carries over the the full game, which I expect). It's that bad.

Yes, the most recent test was pretty good, at least by my standards. Quoting myself from the DS test thread:

Played for 20 minutes and I'm quite happy with how things are going.

I beat Dark Souls last year on PC, after playing it for close to a hundred hours. I'm pretty bad at it, honestly ^_^

Since I have an average notebook with a 840M video card, I played it at 720p and could mostly keep it running at 30 FPS. So, as you can probably tell, I'm not very picky when it comes to graphics and performance. If the game runs and it's good enough that I'm not cursing at my system for it's lack of power, then I'm happy.

Well, I greatly enjoyed Dark Souls on my average notebook, and apparently the Switch port runs at least a bit better (played it undocked, will try docked later). I can't judge the netcode because, honestly, I don't care for the online component of the game.

What would you recommend if you had to choose like top 1 or 2 to buy in the Nicalis sale?

I already have Isaac, Cave Story+, and VVVVVV I played on PC.

Dark Souls looks great and plays well in handheld mode, so far.

It seems like a game that I will definitely want to own eventually but I'm just overwhelmed with stuff right now.

I'll probably pick it up when it's $30. By then I'm sure a lot of technical issues will have been ironed out.

With so much to play already I don't feel I should rush into a game that is probably going to need some work after launch.

I still have to get Skyrim but I won't pay $60. I can't believe Bethesda still hasn't put it on sale even once. It seems they've barely touched it after release, too. I can't get behind paying that price if they aren't even going to try to improve the experience.

Looking at the release schedule, next week is nuts. Going to pick up Valkyria Chronicles 4 + 1(JP) for sure, but I don't know if I can control my hands pressing the purchase button on a number of other titles...
LOCALIZE NIL ADMIRARI NO TENBIN ALREADY YOU COWARDS!!!!
Why the fuck did they localize the anime, but never the game. Oh, I remember now! Because that's what they always do.
I'm crying.
Is it good? Always interested to try a otome game even though being a guy.

Edit: Just discovered that there is a ton of otome games on Switch. These developers are quicker than the galgame crowds lol

What Ikaruga is 10? Yup, that's a buy. It's been in my wish list for months...

As soon as my wife gets off the Switch. She's obsessed with NES Classics on there, she lost it when she saw Yoshi!

I had a ton of fun with Ittle Dew 2 and End is Nigh. ID2 was a pretty fun, well done Zelda clone. End is Nigh is a super hard but well made platformer in the vein of Super Meat Boy. Honestly, I'd recommend ID2 a little more but they're both real good.

Toki Tori 2+ and Ikaruga it is... and maybe Risk of Rain since that looks so good. Hard to pass up these prices. I thought Danmaku Unlimited 3 was insane, but holy shit Ikaruga is some seriously difficult shmupping. Love it. Toki Tori will be a nice break from the mania.

I advise to stay away from the Otome we got on Switch in the west so far. The stuff that D3 publishes is not very good, especially if you're not a fan of the genre already. "The Men of Yoshiwara" and "The Charming Empire" at least have nice art and voice acting going for them, but it would be a pity if you got your first taste of the glorious world of pulp girl fiction through those.
The Charming Empire at least has an appropriately bonkers plot.
Freaking Time Travel?!

I think the best entry series that's officially out in English is "Hakuoki" - it's an extremely wordy story that takes forever to get going, but it's written well, full of trashy twists and yet amazingly historically acurate.
Ever wanted to date a Shinsengumi samurai from in the Edo period? Also, there's vampires.
It's already on Switch in Japan, and they localized several versions of it already, so I guess there's hope.

Concerning Nil Admirari I can't vouch for the quality, since I haven't played it. The graphic artist is very good though, worked on other games I liked before, and it has some of my favorite elements: You're solving weird magic crimes with pretty boys in some alternative universe, where the Taishou era never ended (so... like... Japanese steam punk... I guess). Plot is super dumb from what I read, but it's apparently a fun ride with nice romance in it.

The genre can get somewhat unpleasant in parts, where very specific fantasies get visualised. Not everything needs to be a sane and healthy relationship of course (just like it rarely is in the movies), but I understand that it can be quite the entry barrier if you jump into a game and unknowingly fall down the rabbit hole where a guy literally chains you to himself. There's an Otome thread on this forum, were it's easy to get recommendations and details on what to avoid.
The good localized stuff can be counted on one hand, so you can catch up in no time.

And I do not believe that any official version ever has had a locked framerate even at 30fps let alone higher.

Color me interested.

If you dislike the use of scanlines and prefer a clean image, there is an option to obtain a pixel sharp image.

(I don't know if I'm using the exact words because I'm translating from the Spanish menus to English, because I'm too lazy to change the language in the OS menu)

In the visualization options, in the part of the scanlines, set this to "OFF", so it will make to disappear any type of filters.

Respect to the pixel ratio, there is an option inside this menu with the screen size. By pushing up or down in the controller, you can reduce the size, maintaining the aspect ratio. And with left or right, you can change the aspect ratio if you are crazy enough to want to play with a forced 16/9 display :)

Great to see that you're having a great time. 'Excitebike' is other fascinating title in Nintendo history, and other of these steps that served to sculpt the concept of 'Super Mario Bros'. The first 'Super Mario Bros' is not a game centered in the jump, but a game centered in the advanced physics of the main character. Basically, you can run with a button. And by keeping pressed this button, Mario will increase his velocity progressively. The more fast he is, the longer he will jump. In the same way, when you jump, depending on how much time you press the jump button, it will reach a different altitude. So at the end, it's a game about mastering the physics of the game, seeing how every jump will be modified with concepts like the speed.

This same concept of speed and physics, mastering the tempo of a "character", in this case the bike, was first seen in 'Excitebike'. That served to Shigeru Miyamoto for toying with the idea of applying these same concepts to create a much more ambitious universe, thanks to the technical dominance of the horizontal scroll, a landmark for the NES hardware, that was also predated by this 'Excitebike'.

The thing is, I have never spent too much time with 'Excitebike', so it's one of my pending things as an enthusiast of the NES catalogue and the early works of Shigeru Miyamoto. So I feel really tempted with this Hamster release, I also prefer the mixed structure of the arcade, plus the leaderboards in this release.

And by the way, this arcade version is referred a lot of times as 'VS. Excitebike', because VS. was the name of the custom NES hardware in which 'Excitebike' was running :)

I purchased Excitebike ACA, turned off the filter, and it looked perfect.
I booted the NES version of Excitebike that comes with Nintendo Switch Online, and it looks just slightly fuzzier. As if it is being streamed. Maybe the aspect ratio is less ideal than the arcade version, but it looks slightly less clear.

I assume that you did not disable the filter in Excitebike ACA. Unfortunately Hamster still keeps this option enabled for all of their releases.. it is awful and I don't know why.

(In Excitebike ACA, click on +, go to Screen filter, and move that to OFF.)

Thanks for these two bits of info on the sharpness. I'm gonna try it when I get home, out all day today with no Switch.

Another thing I don't remember with the NES version is the bonus rounds. Vs. Excitebike has a nice stunt bonus stage after every 3 races to try and get extra points. Really adds to the score attack nature of the game.

Oh I've never created an OT before! I don't think I'd do a very good job of it because I'm pretty rubbish at using the basic functions of this site haha

I'll just mention in here instead that I think it's rather great and people should buy it.

In fairness, any issues in the underlying game that were ever going to be addressed were done long before this port appeared. And AFAIK there are no issues with the port, so I don't know what they'd be fixing.

There's a lot of issues that have never been fixed by Bethesda and it's true that these problems exist in the PS4 and XB1 versions as well. But the PS4 and XB1 versions also received significant discounts in sales during the first year it was available on those platforms.

I wrote this back during QuakeCon this year and nothing has changed since then.

We're coming up on the 1 year anniversary of the Switch release. On PS4 and XB1 the game got a pricedrop to $40 around that time. Considering the Switch version hasn't even been on sale yet I'm guessing we won't get a pricedrop.

I'll probably grab it on Black Friday since I imagine retailers will put it on sale. Plenty of copies on shelves.

Played a bit of My Brother Rabbit, one of three adventure games that released at the end of this week. Had some trouble with the game freezing up for a second when I interacted with items, but a reboot of the console seems to have solved that.

The visuals and sounds are really different from the other two Artifex Mundi games (Enigmatis 2 and Nightmares from the Deep 2) that I've played on Switch. It's all very dreamlike. Each screen has a lot of tiny details as well.

I can't really speak for the quality of the puzzles and gameplay yet. Enigmatis and Nightmares from the Deep 2 were extremely similar in that regard, so I hope that this game manages to diverge enough from that formula.

What did you think of Enigmatis 2 by the way? I have it on my wish list as "buy when I have time (lol) or when on sale".

OK few questions time!

It's time to get a new mSD card. Suggestions/links/deals?

With a new mSD, how does that work? I have a bunch of games already installed on one. Do I just turn the system off and swap them to play games on another mSD? And if I have games installed on one card but want it on another card (a card for NEOGEO games for example), can I just uninstall and reinstall on a new card, or is there some weird license shit I have to deal with?

Also, I did some of my own research and can't really get a read on Victor Vran. I've started trusting "major" Nintendo review sites less after their Cities Skylines stuff. So I would love to know a) if anyone here has an opinion on VV and b) what sites you all use to read reviews and get impressions on games.
I've played Victor Vran for more than 30 hours now and definitely recommend it. Well worth the price imo (lots of content).

I don't know if the Steam version was finally patched including the Switch additions and rebalanced modes, but it's not only a superb port running at a rock solid 60 FPS, I consider this version the best entry point in the series. Because when you start playing with a new save file, it will return to an almost vanilla 'The Binding of Isaac Rebirth', instead of throwing in the face of a beginner all the extra hard enemies and dungeons of the Afterbirth+ expansion that was intended for expert players looking for a challenge.

I love how every single new enemy, challenge or extra dungeon, needs to be unlocked through successive runs.

But at the same time, how it offers a lot of the extra rooms and items of the added expansions.

In Steam, at least the last year, once you purchased all the expansions, you was fucked off: all the extra hard elements will appear without any logic in your first run in a save file. It has no sense to see in your first run in the game, an extra-hard layout of a dungeon, than in previous versions was unlocked once you have mastered the basic concepts of the game.

Thanks to this new balance in the Switch version, 'The Binding of Isaac: Afterbith+' regained its throne as the best roguelite ever made.
I've put plenty of hours into the original Isaac and Wrath of the Lamb on Steam a few years ago. It was my second best experience with a Roguelike/lite only after FTL. Getting an improved version of Isaac to play on the go actually was one of the main reasons for me to get a Switch.

I've read some bits on Steam and Era about how Afterbirth was fucked up and then some bits about how the publisher and the original creator aren't too cozy. Good to hear from you that the imbalance has apparently been addressed for the Switch version! There was some announcement about a new Isaac title a few weeks back tho and people were wondering if that just meant a different release of the Afterbirth content and were complaining about the strange release and pricing decisions of the publisher, so that still worries me a bit.

What worries me the most though is that the sale seems to be NA only (thus far). What is it with these weak-ass EU sales? Do the Publishers not want my sweet euro? :/
The Way: Remastered however actually is on sale in europe right now. If I remember correctly you were asking about that earlier?

Thanks for the detailed post. I forgot to mention that I can read Japanese, so I can probably read anything not too difficult. I got recommended to try Hakuoki before, too, so it's seems to be a nice starting place. On the other hand, I also really like Nil Admirari's art and the era where it is based. One of my favorite gaming series is Sakura Taisen, and it is also set in Taisho era. The bending of west and east is very interesting to sight.

Regarding the "unpleasant" part, I have read a fair amount of VN targeting at male, so I will probably find most acceptable. Chaining up the girl and the guy is definitely a new "play" to me though lol. Being a straight guy, I hope these will not be too off-putting to me. Regardless, thank you for the post and I will try to get in the genre.

I think Nintendo had a big hand in this port and the Doom port.

Granted Doom finally had a sale digitally I believe not too long ago.

Eitherway, none of the Bethesda games have followed normal Bethesda pricing models. So I wonder if Nintendo has a hand in that.

Or Bethesda is trying something different price model wise. I mean, if I was publisher that made generally good to well liked games, sometimes even really great games, I'd see if I could emulate the Nintendo pricing model on Nintendo platforms.

It is risky because some people, mainly enthusiasts, will see the price cheaper on other platforms. As you have illustrated.

However, when combined with the fact that the Switch is just a little over a year and a half and still adding lots of new users, this pricing strategy can be more successful in the short term because the new users may not be as price sensitive to game costs.

Most of us here are hyper/uber consumers for better or worse, and almost every one is price sensitive to a degree. We are not your average consumer. For example my coworker who buys maybe 4 games a year tops. He had no issues with paying $60 for Skyrim and he will probably get value out of every penny.

What I can emphatically state is that real research and insight on these behaviors haven't really been done in the industry. At least not for public consumption.

In lieu of that a lot of Youtubers/Streamers have stepped in it as pro-consumer people which is weird, because the roles and definitions of the medium are still so influx. I tend to be skeptical of people who only view things from a consumer lens.

Anyway, TLDR; I agree I wish the Bethesda Switch games followed the normal Bethesda price model, because I probably would have bought carts of Doom, Skyrim and Wolfenstein II already. I always wait about 75 days before even considering buying a Bethesda game or Ubi game etc because they follow the same patterns
