Thoughts on this Jank Fest i made? I can even swap Spell Pierce for Swan Song since i don't give 2 fucks about the opponent having a 2/2 creature.

I like it, it's going to jank out a lot of decks while not being obnoxious like Bogles or Infect. I'd maybe add some bounce for tempo purposes, 16 pump spells is a lot.

Yeah, like Murdock says, 16 pumps seem like a lot, especially with 7 more enchantment pumps. Also, your hand will empty very quickly being so low to the ground. What about having 1 or 2 Cold-Eyed Selkie mainboard to get some card draw?

Edit: nvm, missed the Curious Obsession. Also, with 8 U drops and only 11 sources of U to come in untapped on T1, you could have a lot of slow starts. Maybe swap out Hinterlands for Yavimaya Coast and change 1 or 2 Forests to an Island?

Murdock?! I'm a murloc, not some McGyver villain!

Anyway, here's a Flame of Keld decklist for all the doubters, by the mighty jank brewer probably better known as SaffronOlive. It's cheap just like 2tix red was, probably better known as Ramunap Red.

Boros is nuts. I can't wait to start brewing on Arena with all those gems coming in. My not so secret secret tech is Baffling End.

Rules question: Can a Siren Stormtamer's mana ability counter an Assassin's Trophy? Is "Creature" or "You" not the same as "Permanent" or "Opponent"? I have no idea what happens here.

If you control a Siren Stormtamer, you can counter an opponent's Assassin's Trophy if it targets a creature you control. Assassin's Trophy can target any permanent you own though, so if you control any enchantments, noncreature artifacts, or lands and the Assassin's Trophy is targeting one of those, Siren Stormtamer can't counter it.

Also, the ability on Siren Stormtamer is not a "mana ability". It is an "activated ability" that uses mana to activate it. A "mana ability" is an ability that CREATES mana, not an ability that uses mana.

It can counter Assaasins Trophy if the target is a creature you control. So sometimes. Also, Siren Stormtamer has an activated ability, not a mans ability.

Ok, this makes sense now. Thank you both for the clarification.

Do you guys think Dimir will be kind of over represented? Surveil seems like the best keyword and has a shitton of synergy. Also the two specters are kind of insane. (the flying, deathtouch, hexproof one and the 3 exile play one, even when it already died.)

People who tested out sealed are saying it's great for support but has a harder time on its own.

Yeah, Surveil is just a generally good mechanic with slight synergies, it's not really a "thing" in and of itself. There are one or two payoff cards you can use to try and force it like the Spybug, but mostly it's just generic pseudo-card advantage/resource stocking.

Remember that in Sealed, while you have more cards than in Draft, you have much less control over what you get. So you're liable not to get surveil payoff cards while also having a card pool that supports them.

I'm probably skipping prerelease because I don't care about paper magic and Arena is going to have Sealed and I have approximately a billion gems coming my way.

I would be inclined to go Izzet this time, but I know I'll probably go Rakdos next set, so maybe a non-red guild is better?

Nah, too many jank red rares I want to play. Izzet et izz.

They got a pretty even split for me, I like Dimir and Simic. (Doubt I'll play either, granted, but I like them.)

I've played a bunch of sealed on the MTGO beta over the weekend and a couple drafts as well.

Boros is very difficult to handle unless you're Selesnya and/or got all the low cost removal of which there is little of. On the other hand it's not that easy to open a great boros deck in your sealed pool, more often than not I'd expect to play 3 or 4 colours in sealed w/ all the gates and green fixing.

Selesnya is fantastic against boros cause they have 2 commons and 1 rare that gain 4 life on ETB and have decent to great stats and they eventually go over the top.

Dimir is lacking great finishers. They got a couple good flyers but removal for fatties is plenty in this set.

Golgari is pretty bad on its own, undergrowth has almost no enablers. Surveil doesn't really do it since you're generally not pitching creatures into the GY to get 1 more life on ETB or 1 more power until EOT. But Golgari has great midrange cards that work very well combined w/ Selesnya.

Only Izzet deck I built had Niv Mizzet and don't know exactly what it's doing w/o such bombs. I've double splashed hypothesizzle more than once though since that card is nuts. Does come w/ extra feel bads when you whiff.

I'm probably skipping prerelease because I don't care about paper magic and Arena is going to have Sealed and I have approximately a billion gems coming my way.
did you try out the beta at all? They got rid of the anoying beta packs and it was straight GRN sealed this time.

The attractive thing about Selesnya to me is the strength of their pool of uncommons and the fact virtually all their on-color rares are at least baseline playable. Boros is also close to that line with a few obviously less format-playable cards, and it just spirals from there until you get Izzet where like half of the cards in your Guild Pack could be completely unplayable even in your Izzet deck, and Dimir where you've got like two or three bombs you're praying to open because otherwise you've got no win condition.

Boros definitely seems like the way to go in any sealed tournament. I switched my reservation to that as soon as the spoilers were done. Dimir seems awesome so everyone's gonna be trying to force it and a quality Boros deck with a splash of Selesnya seems like it would smash Dimir/Golgari before they even get off the ground.

The mechanics are pretty disappointing to me. Surveil as a Scry replacement is fine but not legitimately exciting, Undergrowth is undercooked, Jump-Start as a mechanic is completely outshined by the quasi-Snapcaster in the set that doesn't even use the mechanic, and Mentor's just more Boros Things.

The actual card selection itself isn't bad, though, it's just that most of the legitimately good cards (like Assassin's Trophy) aren't even interested in the set's mechanics.

i love playing sultai in sealed so far but you do need to open some decent cards. the undergrowth legend that spawns bugs and sacs to draw cards and gain life is pretty good, so that plus lotleth giant and some of the undergrowth creatures can make it appealing to run as many ok creatures as possible and surveil basically anything unimpressive into the gy so you can build up

its how i like to play which is probably why i am having such a good time with it. draw lots of cards, play and trade creatures, then slam giant synergy cards for a massive swing

but yeah boros decks that curve out tend to wreck you, unless you opened a lot of dead weights

i did have a clowny izzet deck with wee dragonauts and the other spells matter creatures, its fun to go off with jump start and bash them for a lot of damage but it seems pretty bad ultimately

i really like the jump start clone card, it can be a lot of value

Unrelated to the game (because I don't play anymore), but what is going on with WotC and distribution? I watch Alpha Investments on YouTube all the time because the market for this stuff is fascinating...And he has been talking a lot about WotC screwing over LGS for a few weeks now?

They put out a "Mythic Edition" of Guilds of Ravnica box sets that are only available from Hasbro Direct, which probably wasn't actually worth losing any sleep over, particularly in how minute it is in face of the more recent news that they're dealing directly with Amazon and other online retailers, something they had previously not done. (Fulfillment through Amazon was usually done by Channel Fireball or other sellers before.)

Basically the concern is that Amazon will use their sheer size and typical loss leading tactics to price any other seller out of the market completely, because they won't hesitate to sell at-cost and LGS locations really cannot do that.

I think I'll try going Selesnya for the prerelease. Going wide with creatures is a strategy that is easy to do since I'm not the most skilled at magic. Splashing in Boros or Golgari looks like it could be good.

Boros will probably be easier if you're just looking for avoiding difficult decisions. Boros is supposed to be pretty strong too. But go for what you'd enjoy the most! For me, Dimir looks like the most fun.

As Imperfected mentions, WotC has made a few LGS-unfriendly changes lately. However, always pay attention to Rudy with a grain of salt. Guy's market is controversy and outrage.

Yeah, and if I remember right he also owns a card shop, so he's not exactly going to be an unbiased source either way.

Rudy and others are rabble rousing about things that they think are going to happen, not what's actually happening. LGSs aren't any more screwed than they were a year ago. Just keep in mind that Rudy is incentivized to stir shit through his patreon and other things he has going on.

Thanks for the info. It's always interesting to see how this stuff goes, haha.

Reading the impressions here i'm kinda disappointed since my wife and i go to a 2hg pre-release and we thought of going dimir+golgari... seems more like selesnya golgari with a splash of dimir is the better choice from the impressions here.

To be fair, I don't think anyone here's even considered 2HG. That's a completely different animal. I wish I could help but I have practically zero experience with that format.
