I wouldn't recommend The Surge. I am always desperately craving more Souls-likes and yet... I couldn't finish it. It's just really, really dull. Combat is OK, like a slower, less responsive Souls with lamer weapons. The enemies, environments, weapons, etc. are just hopelessly bland. Character customization is barebone, it doesn't have the atmosphere of the other Souls-likes either. I really tried to give it a chance, but for me to not even bother finishing it, means it's really got very little going for it...

I had a go of the trial for The Surge over the weekend, and I was actually enjoying it. From what I played, the only problem I had, which admittedly was quite annoying, was the fact that there was no impact when I was getting hit, so I was finding myself having to keep checking my health bar to see if I'd taken damage.

Am I right in saying that it was by the people who made Lords of the Fallen? If so, I definitely The Surge more than what I played of that.

Yeah, same devs. I did sorta like the demo/trial too, enough to put it on a birthday wishlist, but once I got to play the full game I just couldn't finish it.

So I started the Crown of the Sunken King, got to the Cave of the Dead, and came across a "boss fight" against three random npcs. What's up with that? Seems kinda random and just a tad bit lazy. The DLC is great otherwise. I love the whole ancient underground city aesthetic and the inside of the Dragon Sanctum had a pretty cool atmosphere and great sound design. It feels like I'm exploring the inside of a haunted pyramid or something lol. Loved the ghost warriors that you couldn't hurt initially too. Ready to jump back in later tonight.

There is a setting in the menu to turn on "combat hit slowdowns" that might fix your problem with the feedback. I think once I learned parrying and jumping/ducking enemy attacks the combat really clicked.
The Surge is a tremendous improvement over LOTF in my opinion. Very much looking forward to the DLC.

Man. :(

I wonder if anyone tried to do that with Dark Souls, kinda wanna see what hidden things there are in there.

All 3 Souls have been datamined to hell.

For example, on top on my head, from Souls 1 we got the prototype of Bed of Chaos, that was a regular boss fight, and an unusued "boss", or scrapped dialogue about Oscar having a bigger role in the story.

From Dark Souls 2 there's a lot of unused maps, like a pretty diferent Iron Keep, or a child model of the Emerald Herald.

From Souls 3 we got stuff like unused weapons, a face model of Ocelotte or the animation and menu of the canceled bonfire creation.

Nioh perhaps? Don't know if it's on sale though!

I'm not sure if they're on sale, but DMC4 SE and Bayonetta are both solid action games that are probably two of the best in the genre.

They're not RPGs though, obviously. DMC4 SE is directed by the guy who directed Dragon's Dogma however.

ARPG wise, all I can think of is Nioh.

I can only repeat myself and say The Surge is pretty great. It's a more confined and brutal experience in terms of level layout and enemy placement, which I enjoy a lot.
It also has some clever tweaks to the formula especially in terms of outfitting and "souls" caching.

Surge is pretty close and on sale but I find Nioh more enjoyable yet it's not on sale. Nioh comes with all its DLC though so could arguably be worth more despite the higher price.

I'm assuming you already played Dark Souls 1 and 2/Scholar of the First Sin?

If so, then I'd recommend Nioh, even if it's not on sale. If you want high quality combat it doesn't get better than Nioh. You can also try Salt and Sanctuary. It's a 2D Metroidvania, but the combat (as well as level and boss design) has many Souls-like influences and qualities. It's not on sale but it's cheap, only $20 which is more than worth it. Hollow Knight is apparently kinda Souls-like (though not in combat but more level design?), I haven't played it yet but it looks amazing, and it's on sale.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Sadly Nioh is not on sale, but that's a game I am very interested in.

Bayonetta & DMC4 look pretty wild. Can they be comfortably played with kb+m?

Morrigan I have not played Dark Souls 1 or 2. For some weird reason Dark Souls 1 is not on sale right now... but DS2 is. I've always held off on DS2 because I've heard such negative things about it. I've heard great things about Salt & Sanctuary and Hollow Knight, but for some reason I can't get into 2D games.

DS2 is really really good, dude. DS1 is probably cheap even if not on sale, but it probably plays like crap with kb/m.

Do get DS2 and ignore the haters. It's a fantastic action-RPG with tons of content, great memorable areas, and tons of customization options for your character.

No reason to avoid DS2 - play it and enjoy. I bought vanilla and beat it and then SOTFS and beat it. Wonderful game. Would even play again if my backlog wasn't so nasty.

By all means, give Dark Souls 2 a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I'm not really sure. I only played them on console.

I'd imagine they'd be awkward to play like that though, especially DMC4.

And yeah, DS2 is great. I admit there are problems, but it's my favourite.

The dlc's are the only good part of that game, but don't bother with the co-op areas. They are garbage.

Get the SOTFS version, not only is the better version, it also has all DLCs and has more players (servers are split between vanilla and SOTFS on PC).

Luap - Nice! Just make sure to level up your Adaptability to ~100 as soon as possible (levels are cheap early on, so when you go level up, spend a point or two in ADP at every opportunity until you reach 100), that will make dodging more efficient in terms of iframes. The ADP issue is why a lot of people hated the game, it's a real issue but easily circumvented.

105 Agility is the sweet stop because it's the same i-frames as fast rolls in DS1. Agility goes up with bot Adaptability or Attunement (more with the first one).

Debatable, but it is worth getting for the DLC/pvp server issue.

Well yeah of course IMO. Mind you vanilla does some things better but overall to me SOTFS is the winner.

Just realized I had lost my saves for DS and DS2 on PC since no cloud saves, silly me :(
I played more DS2 on console anyway so that save is safe at least.

Jesus, DS2 kicks you straight in the nuts from the start. All the enemies at Heide's Tower of Flame have high HP and hit like trucks!

Use strike damage (like the mace) against them, otherwise they're brutal.

You... did go to the Forest first, though, right?

No... I didn't see a forest. I went from the tutorial area to Majula, looked around a bit and went down the sewer area to Heide's.

...I should probably look at the wiki.

Edit: Ok I found the forest. Is DS1 also non-linear like this? It's such a different feel from DS3, which really only has 1 route.

DS1 is similarly non-linear, but the "expected" beginner area is muuuuch easier than the other possible paths you can go to, which are almost impossible for a beginner to go through compared to Heide's.

But yeah, the Forest isn't as harsh as Heide's to start with haha.

Oooo! You're in for a treat. Yeah you can find a vendor in the forest who can sell you life gems. Beat the area boss and have her move over to Majula.

Enjoy the game!! :)

Hope soulsEra had a good thanksgiving. I did a bunch of ring collecting on DS3 today. 6 more rings and I'll finally have that platinum sitting next to my platinums of BB and DS2.

I went through Heide before the Forest as well. Hell it's been a while but I may have even gone through the Wharf and the first part of the Bastille before the Forest.

Not quite as wide open as DS1 with Master Key as starting gift, but it's still a nice bit of variety. The whole Gutter section opens up once you can survive that first jump too.

Wew, there's nothing like going through a Dark Souls game for the first time. I'm enjoying it so far, for the most part. I just reached the merchant lady in the forest, bought the key to open the blacksmith's shop, and bought a Mace and upgraded it to +1.

The good:
- It's got that Dark Souls feel.
- Life Gems are nice. DS3 didn't have those (though I guess it had Ember).

The bad:
- I really wish I had played DS1 and DS2 before DS3 though. DS2 definitely feels clunkier than DS3. There's noticeable input lag on my attacks - not terrible, but noticeable (and yes I turned off double clicking, which did help).
- Reading up on the Soul Memory system... that sounds like an incredibly dumb mechanic.

Amen to that haha. What I would give to have a first experience again.. Need new FROM games lol.

Glad you're enjoying it so far. Starting with 3 and going backwards probably feels strange lol, but the games are still great thankfully.

My first (and toughest) was DS1, so most refinements in each subsequent game felt like a natural progression to me.

DS1 is even more non-linear than DS2 at the start. It really is one of the biggest downfalls of DS3 that it is so linear.

Dragronrider = souls for the cat ring. I love going down to the Gutter asap - it's fun to explore and light all the torches, as well as getting the fragrant branch to then open up the woods early too. Although that was vanilla, I think they jigged the branches around in SOTFS.

I actually like Soul Memory.
It helped when it came to grinding for Souls, as co-op in IK was netting me ludicrous amounts of souls as I got to higher levels.

Agility was dumb, but you can remedy that in the first 20 minutes of the game, so it's hardly an issue. Unless of course you don't know about it.

Lmao I've already lost like 10k souls in the forest. There's so many ambushes and places to fall off.

Funniest thing so far was one of those turtle-shelled armor guys swinging his big ass mace at me, hitting an exploding barrel and sending both of us flying.

DS2 progress: Made my way through the Forest of Fallen Giants and took out The Last Giant. Then I spent the remainder of my session backtracking and opening new areas with the Soldier Key. I put down my White Soapstone outside The Pursuer fog door and got summoned, but almost immediately got rekt by the stupid ballista.

Thinking about it, it makes sense, but I would not have expected friendly fire either.

I just wanted to say that I tried Bloodborne on Vita remote play the other day, and it's surprisingly playable. Slight input lag means it's harder to parry, but otherwise it's a decently playable option if you can't sit in front of a TV.

Going for a new DS2 run. Any recommendations on a dex build?

Never tried the cheese rapier build. Is that still good in SotFS?

Yep. It still destroys. I always do dual rapiers when I just want to through the game real quick.

Could try dual warp swords. Heavy stat requirements and you need to do some dragon bone farming but its pretty fun.
