That's so blatant I have no idea how that got past anyone on the team.

That's pretty funny and I'm sure they'll change it when they get people complaining.

I understand the tonedeafness from Valve but if you think about it, the black hero is given the whip and they are cracking it, either to scare/motivate their neighbours -- which can be any colour -- or hurt them.

It's a black card hero though, not a dark-skinned hero. Still kind of a bad association.

No one who participated in the creation of this card saw an issue? Unforced error. Diversify your organizations.

Vibes of:

But not nearly as funny (plus probably hopefully lacking in intention).

How do people not catch these things?!?

Like I'm oblivious at times but even I can see the problem here.

Yeah that sounds like no one caught that.

You could literally fix this by renaming the card.

While dissapointed at valve, I am not that surprised.

You telling me the weird libertarian internet company with the questionable moral compass was gamma get kinda a little racist at some point? No way!

I saw tidings of this happening during the PAX stream. Black Hero is also being taken out of context in both directions.

Yeah i think they got caught up explaining the effect to themselves and completly forgot about the implications of having the words black and whip in a card. Could have been fixed by renaming card and changing art but they didnt notice.

Let's see if libertarian Valve actually bothers to fix this, or if they'll think nothing's wrong with it.

I'll honestly be surpised if they don't change the name especially since it's just a digital card game. Not that surprised they missed the connotations though given how many cards there probably are.

They could fix this by renaming the card, but if black hero is a recurring target, they'll inevitably run in to more issues as cards are created that target black heroes. I think they're just going to have to replace the black hero to be another color going by this thread, though white hero doesn't sound any better, or most other colors, like yellow hero.

LOL.
And they even posted it on their official account.
I guess people are brain dead when doing QA check.
Could be any color/element heroes, maybe change the card name....anything.

This is what Valve means with "Black hero"
This has nothing to do with skin color, at all

Yeah. I immediately recognized it as "Black" in the same sense as MtG, where it's not about race.

But, the fact that it can be interpreted the other way is a problem and we shouldn't be against Valve changing the card name.

yikes..

hopefully now that it's been pointed out (how did it even make it this far??) they'll change it, and not double down

"As a design philosophy, we've done a lot of work to make it once you learn the game rules you can predict any card interaction."
