Song of the Day

Khemmis - Above the Water

Sick doom band in the spirit of Pallbearer - out of Denver, CO. They're touring pretty sporadically but have already made a name for themselves. If you've never heard them before, you're in for a treat.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Feels like deja vu, but this was way more melodic than I expected.

I'm not big on their music but that album cover is definitely bad ass. This song is pretty cool though. May give them another shake at some point.

Hantaoma, relatively obscure french Folk Metal band. Quite the catchy song.

Litham, equally obscure algerian Death Metal band. Discovered them years ago, that intro never left me.

Hantaoma is legit. The band members' main band, Stille Volk, is one of the best pagan/folk (non-metal) band I've heard.

Not a song of the day but I like to post usually stuff that I think is fairly unknown and in my current listening playlist (like a few days ago with Mizmor). Right now that is Fórn. Bell Witch fans may want to give a listen.

Song of the Day

Amorphis - Black Winter Day

Today's pick comes from Finland, a song by arguably one of the most prominent metal bands in the country, Amorphis. The band is known for their haunting melodies and Black Winter Day is no exception. It has one of the most beautiful melodies I've heard in a metal song. The guttural growls are nicely contrasted by the clean vocals in the chorus. Over all, it's just an amazing composition and perfect for those bleak, winter moments. Mind you, that the band has gone somewhat of an change from this older style and is less extreme these days, but still worth listening to.

If you want to hear more, check out Tales From the Thousand Lakes album. Their best record in my opinion.

My wife still has the original CD, it's both our favourite by Amorphis :)

It's the only Amorphis CD I own. Remember picking it up some 10+ years ago just for that one song. It quickly rose to be one of my favorite albums. :)

well I'm jealous. on multiple occasions I've considered flying to NYC to see them since I missed them in 2009 when they were on tour with wolves in the throne room. They haven't been on tour since... and usually only play the one off shows in NYC/Maryland.
But they told me that they talk about touring constantly and hope for 2018 :/

There's a show coming up in December where it's all of Krallice's drummer's bands playing in a tag team until Lev drops dead from exhaustion

I'm feeling thrashy so today's song of the day is Steelcrusher by Hammercult. The album art drew me in but the music kept me. Enjoy your Sunday!

Hard to classify sounds about right. It always throws me for a loop when I listen to this kind of music and it has a happy, feel good vibe, it's so weird. It can work, though. It reminds me somewhat of Ghost Bath's Starmourner in that way.

And now for something completely different.

Ok, straight up, Dale Crover is one of the best drummers in the business. The guy knows how to be economical, he lays some mean beats and knows how to enrich a song through rhythm. He just knows his shit.

So imagine when a couple of Mexican dudes enlist his help and Trevor Dunn's (yeah, we're up to half Melvins here, or 2/3, not sure) to create some real slow, real melancholic and heavy music. Enter Low Flying Hawks.

Looking at the number of views they have in YT and listeners on Spotify makes me sad, so I'm trying to change that. That's from their debut LP, Kofuku.

Their second LP came out in August, Genkaku. They have a guest appearance by King Buzzo himself too, so they've kinda gone full Melvins on a couple of the tracks.

It's great music and worth your time.

I am way late to getting into Necrophobic, but this song is my favorite of theirs by far. Early/mid 90's satanic death metal done right!

The new Morbid Angel is very good

This one's a buy. Better than Gateways I think. Love the production, lurching guitar and punchy drums

What's good metal Era. Posted sporadically on the old site, gonna try and make an effort to be less of a lurker

This one has always been a favourite of mine...

Ya'll got any of that... Atmosphere?

24) Lantlôs - .neon

The whole post black movement largely bores me, but this album, man.. pushes all the right buttons for me. The one before is alright, and after they kinda took a nosedive, but this one is just about the best of the genre, one of my favourites from that year.

Looking forward to that. I'm gonna be at their show in a couple of days too.. same day as Cannibal Corpse/Power Trip but what you gonna do.

Day 27? Well let me tell you about Day 27!

I adore this album; luckily I can separate the art from the artist since their vocalist was such an asshole, this is some good stuff.

1-10) Click here to see
11-20) Click here to see
21) Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
22) Temple of Baal - Mysterium
23) Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Finisterre
24) Lantlôs - .neon
25) Behemoth - The Satanist
26) Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters
27) Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane

One of the best records ever made, even though I still think Reinkaos is slightly better. Those riffs are just sublime. And yeah, Nödtveidt was something else. Brilliant composer but pretty frigging delusional and a convicted killer.

Stars Will Fall - A Pregnant Light

Let's give this one a shot today. A Pregnant Light is a pretty unique project in a sea of "post-black" bands out there these days. Elements of black metal, punk, post-punk, and just straight up rock are thrown together here but it all sounds cohesive. This is the song that got me into the band and I was super addicted to it for weeks after I heard it. Their discography can be a bit up and down but when they hit, they hit hard for me.

The new Taake came out a few days ago; after a listen I'd say it's a decent album and worth a try but its quality is far from Hoest's previous work.

The production is quite a step back from Noregs Vaapen which to me is rather disappointing.

It's also severally lacking in Banjo solos

Hey all metal heads! Just happy that i have found this thread! To start things up, ill answer the questions
  • What draws you into metal?
Metal! Well. Uncle was a fan of Rush, Journey, Ozzy when i was young, it kinda hook me. Since then, its metal all the way!
  • Favorite genre(s)
Thrash, Death, Speed, Heavy
  • Favorite band(s)
Death, Pestilence, D.R.I. , Metallica, Exodus, Pantera, Slayer. I know, i just fuckin like old music...
  • First album(s) (what got you into the music?)
Rush - Signals. I was crazy about Subdivisions
  • New favorite album(s) (recent discoveries, new or old)
Skeletal Remains -Condemned to Misery : Its plain and simple. A recent band who sound like old Death- Leprosy,Human, Spiritual Healing, Pestilence -Consuming Impulse, Obituary - Cause of Death . Here is a little vid:

Iv been listening to the album for the past two month nearly everyday. Its just fuckin awesome. Even thinking about putting this band in my all time favorite. While im not crazy about their first album, their second one is a masterpiece. Like the voice, bass, drums, guitars solo, eveything seem to fit perfectly together. If your an old Death fan, it is a must. Iv try for a long time finding a band that sound like Death, and iv found it. The song "Euphoric Bloodfest" will remind you of Death too much, with a part with Spiritual Healing vibes, and the last two minutes, a feeakin guitar solo that is just too god damn amazing. Go listen to this band like now!

Euphoric Bloodfest:

Full album to listen: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8zV7CYD1GeA

Album available on Itunes :Condemned to Misery by Skeletal Remains https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/condemned-to-misery/1010854550

Seriously, just fuckin encourage this band.
  • Favorite instrument and why?
Gotta be drums.
  • What don't you like about this music?
Mastodon. Why the fuck this band exist. I just dont understand. It never hook me up, but its freakin popular. Guess i didnt click, for unknowned reasons... Also kind have difficulty of bands who yell, screams too much unnecesarly, cheesy voice who break the band.
  • Do you play an instrument?
Flute. Like just to annoy people. You can also invite me to a karaoke and make me sings to break a party over. Got this talent.

SONG OF THE DAY

Lots of talk about French bands in here, so I'll post a song from my favourite one.

Mars Red Sky, from Bordeaux, have one of the best live sounds I've heard. Super heavy riffs and some sweet stoner grooves. I was lucky to see them in Toronto last summer when they toured North America in support of their most recent album.

Here's Strong Reflection; the opening song of their very first album. Enjoy!

New Morbid Angel track just released today. "For No Master". It's a great Morbid track. Very much death metal again, looking forward to the new record.
