I do not understand the complaints about board size, or anything else to do with the game that compared it to previous entries. This is a brand new game. It's meant to be played in a different way. Finally played the fourth board. It's awesome! Need more boards especially unique ones like that.

I had about 10 people over at my place on Friday, so we played with 2-3 people on teams and it was a great time. I ended up playing another round of it yesterday at a friend's place and we also tried out the river survival mode which was fantastic. Really enjoying the game so far! As others are saying, I hope they add in an additional board or two.

I have to admit that despite the annoying lack of Pro Controller support, I've gotten used to using the Joy-Con. Rolling the dice and doing high-fives with motion control is pretty fun.

Apologies if a dumb question, but can you play online with people on your friends list?

If you're referring to the Online Mariothon, then yes you can play with people on your friends list.

Agreed, I get the sense that the vast majority of people complaining about board size simply haven't played it.

Just to be sure, there are no options right now to tinker with some of the board game settings right? My squad really wanted to crank up the amount of bonus stars given out at the end of the game but we couldn't find the option to do so, (if it does exist).

Why are so many options missing? ND Cube needs to get certain options for these games and needs to make coins feel more important. You'd think the Wii games would've felt more "casualized", but this game feels like it was meant for the Wii with how easy it is to get stars and hands out coins to everyone like it's candy. The random bonus stars are still lame af. Tell us what the bonus stars will be before the match starts so that will add another layer of strategy to the game.

Items ARE WAYYYYYY TOO CHEAP. Again this comes back to coins being handed out like candy so everyone can buy a Golden Pipe. Stop making this game easier for everyone. It's super lame. NOT everyone needs to feel like they're a "winner".

After playing a bit more, the boards are definitely not great. After turn 3 there will never be a point where you can't afford a star, and if you're lucky you can pick up multiple stars in a turn, or in a row, etc. The boards are too small to really spread the stars out and that hurts them. Coins are also too readily available.

This game is getting a big pass because the car mechanic is gone and the mini games are great. The small boards are not a good way to go with this franchise. The game wants "everyone to feel like a winner" so they lower the amount of coins needed to spend on items and the Star. Then they GIVE EVERYONE coins so everyone can feel like a winner to buy as many Golden Pipes and Stars as they want.

In a way it's not that bad that more people get stars, it actually keeps things competitive and you need to keep Lakitu in mind, have money for multiple stars at once, etc. Like yeah, I have issues with it, but I've also had some great games because of the increased star count causing more tension.

So yeah, the game must have been originally pitched without the Mario Party mode and they quickly retooled Toad Rush into a co-op mode once they realized how much better it would sell with the old format being front and center. It's the only explanation I can come up with to explain Partner Party being the outright superior game mode (forced co-op aside).

Had fun last night playing this and drinking with a couple of friends. Definitely just seems like more Mario party bullshit. And that's totally fine.

I think the biggest problem with this game is just how sloooooow everything is! You can't even turn off mini-game explanations (as far as I'm aware) which has been a staple in the series since Mario Party 1. It's also crazy you have to watch Toadette sloooooowly float to the Star spot every single time, text boxes/menus are slow (you could make text boxes faster in previous entries), things like stealing stars and coins take longer because there's more animations and unskippable cutscenes, etc etc. That's why 20 turns takes 120 minutes, not because of the actual game, it's all the cutscene/textbox/menus padding that adds up which you can't skip. Guarantee you if you could make all that skippable/faster and no mini-game explanations 20 turn games would take about as long as they do in Mario Party 4. Which is still slightly longer than 1-3 but I would be much happier with that pacing than the current one right now.

They desperately need to patch in these options.

After having played three games, I can honestly say that the game is completely unbalanced. After turn 3, it's almost guaranteed that at least one person will get a star each round. We had a guy earn 9 FUCKING STARS by the end of a 10 turn match (admittedly, 2 were bonuses), with him getting 2 stars on a single move twice. The boards simply are too small, as Toadette can never move far enough away from the active players as to be out of range for more than a single turn.

The game also spends far too long in the board game phase in comparison to the minigame phase. They need to speed that up dramatically.

Because players earn stars on almost every turn. All strategy or decision making that used to be involved in terms of board movement and pathing is completely gone. You just go in a circle. No alternative routes. Stars relocate and appear directly in front of players. Someone earns a star, and the star will typically move <10 spaces away. It's honestly a joke. And it's not uncommon for someone to earn 2 stars per turn, as you can almost circumnavigate the entire board with many characters.

Bigger boards means more paths. More routes. More strategy and positioning. More spaces and space variety. The return of Bank Spaces and Duel Spaces. More engagement.

Maybe if the coin economy was improved, this wouldn't be an issue. But as it currently stands, coins are handed out like candy. So we have a game where stars can be earned on almost every turn, and almost everyone has more than enough coins to buy stars and other items constantly.

No difficult decisions need to be made regarding movement, coin management, item usage, etc. It's all been watered down.

It's both. Only four boards, and the boards we do have are extremely cramped.

Items are way too cheap. And why are only 3 items available at each shop?

More items = more options = more ways to play = more strategy.

Bring back item bags. Reverse mushrooms. Cell phone. Lucky Lamp. Warp Block. There were so many unique items in this game that did a lot of really cool things, and most of them are missing. Items are currently a joke.

And you're completely right about this game feeling like a "casualized" Wii game. The constant forced high-fives you have to give everyone tells you all you need to know.

I just hope the DLC rectifies much of this.

If you play River Survival solo, DK is the most annoying to unlock. The CPU can be mind numbingly stupid in River Survival. I lost literally 100M from the end one time because we got caught on a rock and the CPU kept moving against me when I attempted to move around it. And you have to pray they at least attempt to get balloons, because half the time they just sit there.

Options is a big problem with a lot of recent Nintendo games honestly. Had the same issue with Mario Tennis Aces. Dunno why such a basic feature would be omitted. I attempted to do the same as you to no avail.

It also explains why there are only four boards, and why they just don't feel right as "Mario Party" boards. It's because, like you said, they were probably originally designed as Partner Party boards.

And then someone midway through development decided they needed to bring back the actual board games. It explains why everything feels so half-baked.

This game is tons of fun! Beat River Survival 3 times, Played a full Mario Party on all the boards, beat the first run of Challenge Road, played the Sound stage, and just played a full 10 turn board with 3 friends (4 people total) and had a blast. I also wouldn't call those friends Mario Party fanatics either and we had a blast!

My ONLY TWO issues with this game are the lack of online options (more mini games and maybe a party mode just for friends?) and the horrendous bonus stars that are random to the core and one of them often rewards poor performance. Sometimes makes the winner feel less like a winner and that kind of sucks.

A very solid 8.5 out of 10 from me personally! (Half a point for garbage bonus stars, yes it's that bad, and a full point for lack of interesting online play)

Yep the items add so much strategy to the game. I'm looking back at Mario Party 3. You had a Toad shop and a Boswer shop. They both carried about 7 items each. These items add so much strategy to the game like a Reverse Mushroom. I wished you could use the Poison Mushroom in this game on yourself to add a layer of strategy. The game doesn't have to have 14 items, but give the shops like 5 items each or so. The Allies can be OP in that you easily go around the board and collect multiple stars in one turn because the boards are so small.

You only need to finish 3 routes on River Survival on normal difficulty before DK is unlocked. Finishing all 5 is necessary for the gem and to unlock hard difficulty, but you probably don't care too much about that.

Minigames are definitely the star of the game. The boards are alright....still think they're kind of uneventful on their own. I gotta echo what someone else said that the partner mode seems to have been designed first, and then the regular 4 battle royale mode was added in later. The boards are clearly designed around the former (partner mode is pretty fun, at least).

I think my favorite mechanic is the Ally feature. Especially how you can bring them into some minigames with you. It's pretty clever.

Overall, I'm enjoying it. Definitely nice to see Nintendo go back to classic-style MP after 9 and 10. I just really hope this game gets DLC to flesh out its content some more.

The minigames are one of the few things they got right in this game. I think I've played just about all of them, and there's only a couple that I have no desire to ever play again.

That's pretty good.

Wow, I was actually pretty close to losing to the AI on hard and they just threw it away.

On the last turn, Mario didn't use his dash mushroom and rolled a 2 and was a step away from buying 3 starts for 5 coins each. Rosalina who's been didn't big word I can't say didn't use her golden warp pipe on the last turn. I was only up by one, but either of them could've had that.

So im tossing up between this and Mario Tennis Aces. are they comparable?
Both multiplayer titles, but they have a different focus. MTA is more of a competitive game with the online tournament 1v1 mode as the main draw. SMP is primarily for local four-player board game nights and has minimal online.

If you're a single player, you'll probably get more value out of MTA, but SMP is the better party game.

Yea which is a shame because adding options is such an easy way to add longevity to a game. My friends and I wouldn't have played towerfall nearly as long as we did if it didn't have the insane number of different options to mix and match. Well I hope the first DLC pack will add the option to turn on all bonus stars (also maybe some options around tweaking followers), Overall though still having fun with the game.

Me and my fiancé spent some quality time on this during the weekend, playing 5 matches of 10 or 15 rounds each, us 2 and 2 CPUs. Here's my considerations so far, from someone who probably last played a Mario Party game around the DS times and even then briefly, so I really have no way to compare to much that the series had before, and I'm not going therefore to talk about how the boards feel smaller or anything.

First of all, I think the boards are fine. What appears initially very straight-forward can become really bonkers (the one with the tropical islands is mad), but the fact there isn't some groundshaking event every 2 steps makes it easier to strategize. Of course, you can only calculate things to a certain point, as there are cases (on the islands again, in particular) when you need very specific drops, and of course the star moves to random locations which can screw people over drastically, but hey, that's Mario Party for you. I'm slightly disappointed that the endgame of each is the same, in the sense that the last 3 turns get everything doubled basically, with an unskippable cutscene to announce so every time. As we progressed through the boards it became kinda annoying to watch it for the 4th and 5th time. Special mention to the golden board at the end: straight-forward, tactical, very fun overall, really enjoyed the wager mechanism and the shortcuts on there.

Let's talk about the minigames then, shall we? They're pretty good. There are a few which are close to unplayable with CPUs on your side and a human on the other because they require some oddly specific skills the computer seems to lack (on lower difficulties, that is), but overall I feel like the minigames offer more than enough value and variety. Out of the 80 there are still many I haven't seen. Some have really excellent background and surroundings as well, plus I'm surprised how non-invasive the motion controls feel most of the times: one thing I hated about the Wii era, for example, is how basically every Nintendo game decided to assign some pretty important move to a relatively complex motion-based event rather than use a damn button. I didn't find that to be the case here, even if throwing the dice does in fact require a movement.

We only played general Mario Party rules so far, enough to get a Gold on each of the 4 boards. There have been many of the Mario Party shenanigans (random stars gifted to people to turn the match around its head is a classic, for better or worse), and in most matches it felt like there was always a superlucky player and a very unlucky one, be that human or CPU. For reference, I had a match where I ended up dead last with one star despite playing well, and another 15 rounds match where I finished with EIGHT stars (and it wasn't even the golden board which showers you with stars). The game's randomness makes it more exciting but it can be slightly frustrating at times, but for example it was hilarious to go through the golden board as we were calculating the paths, the throws, the power-ups required to get another run at buying stars, and how that will manipulate the results of the game. Fun stuff.

We yet have to try the other game modes, as we only unlocked the first gem given for the Mario Party mode specifically. What we played so far has been mostly really great, and while I would have enjoyed more tables, I don't feel like I wasted my money or anything, as we'll still play this quite some hours probably. The power-ups, the different dices and such make for a decent variety of how the matches go. Perhaps the ally mechanism is slightly OP, as there seems to be way too many advantages for owning a buddy. That one match I ended with 8 stars? Happened when I had 3 buddies by my side. I could basically move wherever I wanted. In that sense maybe the smallish boards can be an issue, but I've only really found "problems" with the small paths on the islands, and there you can kinda need to land on 2 specific locations to get out anyway once the bridges go down, so may as well have the isles small indeed.

Overall, I think this is a good game, a fine addition to my library of Switch games that will make for an excellent travelling buddy as well, since we can just place the screen on the table and duke it out with the Joy-Cons - it usually isn't even that awkward with there being relatively few heavy motion-based activities to boot. That would probably have us play with no or limited volume, which would make another feature shine: the fact that the current player's Joy-Con plays a little jingle with the vibration is genius, I've hard mine like 50 times already and I can't get enough of it, lol. I may play some more later today, we'll see, either way it seems like an excellent entry point for a Mario Party. I do hope they will add more free tables, characters and minigames, but as is the game is fun and enjoyable for the most part.

Donkey Kong's dice block is absolutely insane. I get 10s more often than I should. And even if I get a 0, that can sometimes be a good thing if I'm already on a good space.

All you need to do is get to three different endings to unlock him. I just quickly unlocked everyone so I had every character unlocked by the time I played with friends since they usually prefer the main competitive board play.

In most mini-games it isn't very relevant besides regular vibration on explosions/hits etc but there are a few mini-games where you need to feel the vibration pattern/depth to identify something in order to win and those use hd rumble very nicely.
