So, guy, after 6000 hours, I think I should talk about how good this game is. It's a pvp multiplayer game where you have more than one hundred heroes to chose from. And while there are preferred ways to play with then, you can be creative and create really fun new ways to play it, making totally different combinations of skills and items every macth(although most of them won't work the best).

Since every match is self contained, you can try whatever you want, and the real punishment for playing bad is playing with people as bad as you, lol. Also, the game is free, but there is no pay to win, only cosmetic features.

There are dozen and dozens of mechanics going on and master take time, but man, when you learn, it's so rewarding. You feel empowered, like there's nothing you can't do in this world.

The game has a simple objective of destroying the other team base, but since you can also kill each other, you can comeback, no matter how behind you are or how many times you were killed.

Oh man, the comebacks. I don't recall a game having so many opportunities to comeback (or throw) as this one. It's another amazing feeling.

The game feture only one map, but since you need to know every tree to know where to hide, where to set trap and etc, this is not really a downside. The map actually is another mechanic in itself that allow you to really setup amazing plays too. And there are cosmetic variations of the map too.

Another compelling thing is working with different heroes to create amazing combos. I mean, you definitely have your own heroe combos, but when you hit that combo just right with your teammates, man...

The game also features different modes and a completive ladder, while also including mod support that allows for a lot of entirely different games inside the game. Ever played the custom maps in Warcraft? Come here and you will find it here.

Even when not playing it's entertaining to watch the hundreds of best plays compilations around YouTube and twitch. It's literally worth play a few dozens of games just to understand how the game works, uninstall the game and only use that knowledge to watch championships. I'm not kidding, a lot of players stopped playing and only watch the pros now days.

Of course the game has problems, like balance issue, old bugs and a community that can really be toxic, but this also affect other games too, so no big news.

I'm also making this thread because the game has a very sharp learning curve, and took me months till I stopped being excrucinated during games because if my bad performance, and I quit a few times think I would never learn. But I always came back because I knew how good the game was, and man, was worth. At least half of the games are frustrating, but the other good games totally make up for it (depending on your personality, if course). Literally the most satisfied with a play I made in a game happened here.

Try it. Try for a month. And if stick with it, you will experience amazing games too. Just believe me.

I've tried it and League several times and I can see the appeal but I've never had fun with the game once and my threshold for putting up with not fun games is rather low with so many options out there now.

Nah, MOBAs are quite low in my "thing i might be interested" list right there with baseball and putting my arm on a lit oven

I tried, even, for an article, but its so completely against what i like in games that i couldnt be more turned off by the experience. I can still definitely recognize its a very well made game for its genre though.

I played dota 2 for quite some time up until I believe version 6.0 came out and there were significant HUGE changes to the game. I took a break around that time because life etc but I want to get back into it.

How long would it take for someone who played from around 2012-2015/6 to get back into the swing of things dota wise and learn the new game?

I played about 3 years of League before quitting. Tried DOTA2 after abd nothing about it ever clicked for me. Even did that A-Z challenge thing trying to find someone I liked playing enough to stick with the game .Never happened. Found Heroes I enjoyed, but not enough.

For the record, I didn't really like LoL either. I mostly played with friends, and even then a lot of ARAM abd the like.

I recently noticed the simple differences it has over so many LoL clones on mobile that make it standout to the top of the genre. It really is an incredible game.

I played a ton of WC3 Dota but fell out of the genre because it required too much dedicated time to play. I truly believe that MOBAs and MMO Raiding offer some of the best gaming 'highs' the industry has to offer, but you have to invest an insane amount of time and put up with some serious 'lows' and ugly player toxicity in order to get there. But there's really no comparison to single-handedly saving your raid with clutch heals or completely turning a teamfight around with some crazy play; I still remember specific raid nights and intense Dota games because of how high-skilled everything was and the margin for success so narrow. You can't help but revel in uproarious cheering after some ridiculous blink-force staff-BKB-Black Hole shenanigans.

Never clicked for me. I desperately wanted it to but the moba genre is a hard nut to crack. Smite got me for awhile but I only really played arena. Part of it is the view and click to move which I cannot stand and the other part is just how stressful those matches are when you suck and your entire team is breathing down your neck. I'm envious of the people who stuck with it though because I love games that dominate playtime for years and Dota 2 seems incredibly well made.

everyone's just waiting for 7.20 now
I'm actually waiting for the new ranking season now. Only one month left.

And I forgot, but another really good aspect are dub lines. The narrator and the heroes are so creative and fitting.

A samurai says: "There's a difference between bravery and stupidity"

Two headed ogre: "hit them all!"*hit sound
Other head:"Ouch!!"

White mage in a horse "you shall not pass"

Dominatrix devil "did you forgot you safe word?"
A fallen God "These mortals and their futile games... Oh wait, I'm one of them, hahahaha!"

"Sorry, I didn't wanted to hurt you... Much!"

"Could be worse... Oh, wait, it couldn't..."

Even to this day I'm still hearing new lines.

As much as I was a snob about DOTA during the WC3 days. I can't deny it is a monumental achievement in game design.

The game doesn't get nearly enough praise for its technical accomplishments. It's easily the most advanced and feature-rich multiplayer client ever put out. I've been thinking about making a thread just to discuss all the effort they put into it.

I think you're referring to 7.00 which is when they introduced talents. It's still pretty much the same game, except less farm-oriented and with new runes. You can use a guide to decide which talents to pick or just follow your intuition since in most cases there's an obvious support or non-support choice. I took off pretty much the entirety of 2017 from playing and got back into the groove fairly quick, but I also play Turbo pretty much exclusively now. The match time is way shorter, with 30 mins being considered "really long".

I really really like the game, but the community and match length keep me faaaaar away. I stick with Heroes of the Storm 100% of the time these days.

Hell yeah it is. One thing that people don't mention a lot is the sound design in Dota. It is absolutely top notch. There are hundreds of spells in the game and you always need to know who's casting what and when and the sound design is so good that you always know what's happening just from audio cues.

Yeah, you can play bot games either by yourself or with other people. There's also tutorials and a dedicated noob mode for your first few games where you won't get matched against shitheads and won't have to deal with the crazier heroes.

Man I wish I had tracking for my DotA and DotA all-stars hours as well. Shit was out of control those years

I'm only like 600 hours with DotA 2 but I'd guess over 10k easily with the series and probably another 2k with the genre. DotA 2 is the very best of it's kind

Yes, the game has a play against bots option right when you try to play a game. You can also play with friends against the CPU.

For those who really want to learn, there is a series going in right now that can be really helpful.

Finding up to date material about the game is really hard since updates happens so frequently. But I believe this is one of the best right now.

While they kinda threw it out the window after a certain point, the COLOUR coordination of the hero designs was also on-freaking-point. Each hero had a colour scheme that they adhered to which applied to their cosmetics and their abilities.

It was definitely a factor in making every single hero stand out and have their spells easy to identify in the middle of a teamfight.

I finally dropped it after this latest TI. Valve never cared about account buyers and smurfs and game ruiners so I just don't have any will to play. I'd like to get to Immortal before fully checking out, depends heavily on how 7.20 goes.

I have almost 2000 hours according to Steam. It's a great, great game. Sadly, it's also a game that asks for time. I do not think I will be playing Dota 2 regualrly again, but if there's a Dota 3 or something like that in the future, I'll check it out.

I've actually played several hours of this game. Never online, though I have been curious.

Over a year or two, I played several matches with bots. I think the game is interesting, and the controls are just like Starcraft, which lets me scratch that itch a little bit.

It's an amazing game, for sure. I main Elder Titan but the voice actor died : (

I've been trying to play a bit again recently because I only have a month before my first child is born and thus will likely never have time to play it again.

I do often feel that the game has become Mario Kart, in that the comeback mechanics are so baked-in, that nearly every game I play comes down to a few pushes and teamfights near the end. It seems exciting, but upon closer examination, what's even the point of the first 25-35 minutes of the match, if they are all designed to be photo-finishes?

Also, I would pay for an option to let me play with people my own age.

Paragon was my first MOBA and I loved it... but when I tried Dota 2, I was just overwhelmed. There's just so much going on that I feel like I'll never be able to develop a sense of mastery. So many heroes, items, etc. It's just too much game.

I played a ton of it but it back in the WC3 and Dota 2 beta days but it changes so much that it's just too hard to keep up with. It's definitely a very unique game and it's pretty amazing something like it exists considering the time investment and how much a single bad player can ruin the game.

It's hell of a game, best of the Mobas and could be best multiplayer game overall. It's just that with over 3000 hours I got my fill. I've been playing Heroes of the Storm now, it's better for my mental wellbeing. Less toxic and more casual.

What heroes do you people like to play? My top 10 were:
1. Windranger 236 matchs
2. Mirana 221
3. Jakiro 151
4. Lion 149
5. Axe 135
6. Sniper 120
7. Lina 119
8. Zeus 87
9. Skywrath Mage 76
10. Warlock 73

Had to play suicide solo a lot. Also a big fan of disables and skillshots.

Edit: Seems like there's been 7 new heroes since I last played.

I have to agree OP. It's one of my favorite games of all time, second only to Breath of the Wild now. I've been playing since beta in November 2011, and I had no fucking idea what I was doing then. My only experience with it was some LoL and some HoN, and that was just me trying to play HoN months before and not really learning anything because HoN is a mess.

I still play Dota almost every day. I've traveled to watch the International tournaments in person in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. I'm hoping I could make it to Shanghai for TI9 but I'm unsure if that one is happening. Yes the community can be toxic, but I absolutely love the community regardless, and watching TI in person with them is something truly special.

I think one of the best features (or lack thereof technically?) is one OP sort of mentioned: The lack of a concede/surrender option in pub games. In private and professional games with organized teams, a team can type gg and the game ends in ten seconds. But in pub games, this is part of what facilitates the crazy comebacks you see. There are times games are just over and coming back is damn near impossible, but I'd say more often not they are quite winnable. Especially in lower MMRs, you'll see these crazy comebacks pretty often. For anyone just starting out: If someone is being an asshole about your item build, skill build, or whatever, chances are they are doing something just as dumb if not worse, they're in the same MMR as you and are there for a reason, whether that's them being bad or just starting out too but thinking they know everything.

The heroes are extremely well designed and don't particularly feel samey at all, which is something I've always appreciated about this game. Some heroes that had similar skills have had significant efforts to differentiate between them over the years. For example, Lion and Lina both have an ultimate that was pretty similar: A point and click large magic damage nuke. Now with things like Aghanim's Scepter, that's changed. At the start they are similar, but then once Aghs comes into play, Lion's deals the same magic damage in an AoE around the enemy, and Lina's makes it where it instead does Pure damage and goes through spell immunity.

Valve is also doing a great job over the years with making the game accessible without sacrificing depth. Some of the things that are pretty present and easy to see today were not at all years ago, and even less so in Dota 1. For example, jungle camps. Back in 2012 and some years after that even, people thought that jungle camps would not spawn if you had vision of them. This isn't actually true. What actually happens is there's an invisible box around the camp, and if no unit or ward is in that box, a new camp spawns. This facilitates stacking camps. A feature was added a few years ago where you could hold alt and see these spawn boxes. It was really nice, especially when the map layout changed a bit. Even pros would have trouble keeping up exactly where all the spawn boxes were when the map started changing more often, and it was kind of frustrating and stupid when your ward was one pixel in or out of a spawn box and you couldn't tell until it was too late. Talents have overall been a good addition to the game, especially some of the hilarious level 25 talents.

On top of all that, if you want shorter games but still want to play, give Turbo mode a try! It's a special mode where gold and experience gains are doubled, towers are weaker, you don't lose gold on death, creeps upgrade faster, respawn timers are reduced, and everyone has their own fast and invulnerable courier that will automatically bring you items. It's a much faster game mode because of all these changes, and a good way to play if you don't have as much time. There's also custom games which can be modified Dota games (such as Dota Imba) to something quite different altogether (Epic Boss Fight).

I don't play any MOBAs anymore, but DOTA2 was my least favorite when I did. I'm not a competitive person, but it was easily the most competitive of the bigger titles. I didn't really like the character designs, the individual turn rates, or just how it felt to play in general. I significantly preferred League until Heroes of the Storm came around.

As much as I've fallen in love with the simple gameplay and fast matches of HotS, DotA 2 is always going to be my favorite moba and one of my all time favorite online multiplayer games out there. There's just something about the level of strategy, team work, and unbridled salt that really draws me in like nothing else can... that said, I'm also a Techie main, so that might have something to do with the level of enjoyment I get out of rage from both sides...

As far as favorites, for me it goes:
1. Techies
2. Underlord
3 Winter Wyvern
4. Warlock
5. Chaos Knight
I typically gravitate toward supports or at least support builds (with Underlord being my absolute favorite to play as support due to how tanky of one he can be). But I'll typically play whatever the team needs... unless I just really need to unwind with some techies mines.

Haven't been on in a month or so, but now that that Darkest Dungeon announcer pack is out, I'll definitely be coming back soon.

DOTA was amazing, played since 6.49b and the way how the game has evolved with every patch.. its like a different game every year, for free.

Sadly, I havnet played in a long time and I'm scared to go back, as in, i dont want to be pulled in as hard as before ever again.
