I started a D&D group with another teacher in STEAM club last year. It was pretty short lived, because the afternoon club sessions were more of a time to play games in general and socialize. A handful of kids were interested, but the rest were doing other things in the and it made for a loud and distracting environment to play D&D. We were planning on moving the D&D kids into a separate room the following week, but the students in the club tended to also be in other science and math clubs as well, so it was often a revolving door that made it difficult to plan D&D sessions. But that was my school and it could be a unique situation. Having a dedicated D&D or tabletop club would likely alleviate a lot of those concerns.

This year I'm sponsoring the Anime and Manga Club!

Hello fellow teachers. I will be teaching English and history at a comprehensive school (Gesamtschule) starting next month. I will also be the class teacher for one of the new 5th grades so of course I´m really excited but also terrified. I never had to teach more than 14 hours a week up until now and that will be upped to 25-26 hours this year in addition to all of the work that comes with being a class teacher. How did you manage the workload when starting out as a new teacher?

Yeah, I love researching, presenting and sharing knowledge! I did the test and interview two weeks ago, so now I'm waiting for the results and trying not to freak out. Much.

Could you tell me more about your research?

My main Masters thesis focused around Maths anxiety in 10/11 year old girls in deprived areas. I interviewed them, their parents and teachers and the common thread was that Maths has always been seen as a 'male' domain and has been much more didactically taught rather than dialogical, which tends to be favoured by younger girls when learning. As a result of the deprivation, girls who were Maths anxious grew up and now have daughters of their own who tend to be more Maths anxious, have Maths anxiety or at the very least dislike Maths. Female Primary teachers I interviewed also heavily skewed towards English and the Arts and struggle to plan for Maths lessons as they too have varying degrees of Maths anxiety.

In a nutshell, a joined-up approach locally that targets mothers and their daughters to raise aspiration would go a long way to beginning to reverse this cycle.

My mom is a special education teacher and my wife is an SLP, both in public schools, so I've seen the dedication and hard work first hand. I appreciate the work you do.

I think there's going to be a huge teacher shortage in the UK soon. More and more people are leaving the profession behind due to the insane pressures and workloads that are increasing year-on-year. The working day is extending, and school is becoming used more and more as a daycare service beyond an educational service. Teachers are being asked to work 'extra lessons' that aren't part of their agreed salaries. Also the whole private academy status is going to come around bite the country on the arse when the private funders decided to stop funding.

Two of my friends have been teachers long then I've ever been, and both of them are quitting as they're sick of having to spend an entire Saturday marking work.

I'm new to it all, and I think somewhat lucky since I'm 'PE'. I expect it to hit me soon though, they've already been asked if I'd 'Cover Supervisor' now and again.

How are you finding it all?

Finishing up my BEd and will be applying for teaching positions shortly. My partner is considering getting her BEd, which I fully support as she would make a great teacher.

I didn't do anything!

and that's the issue; you don't do anything; you're wasting your potential, the last thing any of us want is for your lot in life being remembered as some moderator on an internet forum. You can be so much more that Student Beef - so much more. Remove the gum from under the desk is just one small stone in the blocks of your future. It's your choice, it always is and always will be and they'll be your consequences too.

Ooh, didn't realize there was a thread for this here. Third-year Language Arts and history teacher here, middle school level.

Anyone have any ways to make basic grammar and punctuation lessons interesting?

Agree with this massively. I've been teaching for about 16 years now and when students ask me about becoming a teacher I usually tell them not to. All my friends who became teachers at the same time as me have a: dropped out or b: gone to work at a Private School.

I chose option B - abroad and then a small Private school in the UK. It's not really what I wanted to do - I'm fairly left leaning - but the sheer insanity of State Education at times pushed me out. Private Schools have their own set of issues but at least I'm allowed to teach how I want and don't need to worry too much about Homework/Marking Policies and so on!

Stop with the eye-rolling or I'll give you a Behaviour Point.

Hi all, had no idea this OT existed. I graduated in May with a BS in English Ed. I have a certification test left to take, but the testing center near me recently shut down so I've delayed that longer than I should have.

I'm hoping to start my Masters in Ed Tech next Spring. Right now I'm just taking time to recover from a rough student teaching experience, supporting my boyfriend as he student teaches, working retail, and waiting until I turn 24 so I get a reasonable amount of financial aid.

Hey brehs and brehettes. Studying to take my Praxis this January. I'm entering the field through an alternative licensing program (because of course 18 year old me wasn't even thinking about being a teacher) and I'm nervous as hell, but I'm staying on this path.

I've been working in the schools for about 4 years now; first as reading tutor, then as a long term sub, and now as a para for a sped class. It's been stressful and I think it's aged me six years, but I love it.

How is being a teacher in Washington? My husband is teaching in Texas and it is ridiculous.

For me and him on his health insurance the premium is over $1100 per month for an HMO with a $12000 deductible.

Nice to see this community thread spotlighted. 5th year teacher here. HS Visual Arts teacher in WA state. Second year at my current school and it has been cool with a lot of ups and downs. Great gig overall and I'm really happy with where I am at in my career so far.

Oh I missed this thread. I'm an elementary school teacher from Norway. I'm teaching 3rd grade this year and I'm currently on fall break/autumn break. Don't know if there's a similar holiday/break other places, but I guess Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland might have something similar?

Half-term in England is 22nd October. It tends to be 6-7 weeks of school and then a 1-2 week break before another 6-7 weeks of school and then another holiday.

Yeah we do:
6 weeks teaching
2 weeks off
6 weeks teaching
2 weeks off
6 weeks teaching
1 week off
6 weeks teaching
2 weeks off
6 weeks teaching
1 week off
6 weeks teaching
6 weeks off
Repeat

Aye, it never felt that way when I was a kid at school, but its wonderfully structured. The odd term where you get 7 weeks and all the older teachers freak out about it being a long term makes me laugh all the time though. Perhaps its the school I'm at and the ones I visited as an external provider beforehand, but I get a strong sense that the older teachers checked out a long time ago and are just sitting waiting for their retirement day and pension. They do like to tell me they're on a different pension then I'll be on.

Also, I REALLY enjoy working with SEN kids and enjoyed my time working in a Pupil Referral Unit. Its a totally different area of education and those kids need the most help.

This might just be me, but I'd recommend anyone looking to get into teacher to get with an agency and request to do a few terms as an SEN placement or working with kids who have been expelled from mainstream schools. It'll give you a better perspective of behaviour management and make the petty squabbles you'll encounter in mainstream schools seem a breeze.

Ah cool. Here it varies a bit every year, and some parts of the country have some of their breaks a week before the rest. School started on the 20st of August, and we've had 7 weeks of teaching, 1 week off, and now it will be 10(!) weeks of teaching before christmas break. That's longest teaching period this school year though. Can't remember what spring looks like right now, but it's usually a lot shorter teaching periods. We have 1 week winter break in february, and Easter break whenever Easter is. Also May has a few days off here and there, and last day before summer is usually around 20st of June.

I like how busy teaching is though, the day flies by and while it can be almost a bit overwhelming at times, I never check the time becasue I'm bored.

I've always wondered how the work/life balance is in other countries, do you have to take a lot of work home with you to do at night and weekends?

It's sort of up to you. You have to be at work for a set amount of hours, and after that you decide whether you wanna take the work home or do it at school. It also varies a lot what is going on at the moment, like I'm starting with parent - teacher conferences soon and that's always busy. I'll probably do a lot of work/planning at home then. I usually try to finish as much as possible before I go home though, except fridays. I can leave around 1330 on fridays, which is really nice so I sometimes take some work home for the weekend and just leave right after the last lesson.

I have time to grade everything on my workday. I wont take anything home with me because the forst semester I worked I did just that... and it ruined my psyche completely.

Anyhoos - today I have one lession at 10-1040 and then a faculty meeting between 1 and 3 :) TGIF!

Maybe you could show the importance of these roles in a good light for the class and let them volunteer. You could try saying how great the roles are and how much visibility they will get from taking them. It might be interesting to think of a way of engaging them into caring and being excited about the play before assigning the roles.
I believe you started great by sending that photo and creating suspense. If you don't mind, I'm gonna steal your idea and do that on my next class projects too.
Ah right an update on this project with my sickly quiet class - they did and awesome job! Managed to perform for me and another teacher completely to the script, and I even got to film them :)

i switched to another kindergarten, and they dont celebrate halloween this year.

The reason is that the day is an official holiday now, therefore instead they decided to celebrate "Lichterfest".

One part of me approves, because the children at my new place eat extremly unhealthy on a daily basis. On the other hand, I personally like to celebrate festivals from different cultures.

Had no idea this thread existed until the community spotlight!

Hi y'all, I'm a English/writing/TV Production teacher at a private high school in Florida. Currently recovering from homecoming week, giving feedback on essays for my dual enrollment writing classes (ENC 1101 equivalent), grading other essays before the end of the quarter next week.

How is everyone's work/life balance as a teacher? I've been struggling with keeping my work at work, but I always end up bringing something home. Plus, I write my following week's lesson plans over the weekend, so there's always something to do. I'm teaching five different preps this year (2 entirely new, 3 classes I've taught in past years), so it can be time consuming.

What publishing company do you use for texts and workbooks? If any
My school has a contact with Gleerups, but I think they suck so I bought Sanomas Awesome 7 and 8
I think my school offers a couple of choices, but I haven't used them so far, only a few grammar booklets. Mostly I use articles, videos, book extracts, podcasts, novels and so on. Been thinking about trying out a textbook in the spring to see how I like it.

I'm an elementary school teacher at an American international school in China. Been teaching for 7 years. Was in Kuwait and Vietnam before this. Will probably be here for 4 or 5 years and then move on again. My wife teaches band, we make decent money and travel all over the world.
Teachers fed up with teaching in the US I recommend teaching overseas. Plus you get to escape trumpland while still being able to vote him and his fanboys out of office.

My fellow teachers, what's your work life at home? Especially if you're a science teacher.

I have terrible work life balance : ( It's my second year but I'm making smaller quizzes rather than large tests because I just can't with all the grading, I also have more periods this year than last year (for more money at least) but it's causing my life at home to be filled with work. : (

So last week I started a unit on unreliable narrators. A few short stories, and tomorrow I'm gonna let them lose and we'll play Her Story as a class. I'll just preface the game, and let them loose... I'm hopeful they enjoy it. I've used the game before when I was a student teacher and one of the teachers introduced me to the game last year, but I never found a way to properly introduce it to the curriculum in a way that felt organic to me, then I found this. I'm teaching a grade 12 university prep class, so I'm hoping they go deep into it. Fingers crossed.

Germany...
Just found this via the anniversary newspaper.
Im a teacher at a grammar-school in Germany (teaching year 5 to 13) for English & Politics (+Economics). It nice to read so many different stuff from different countries, getting to know other educational systems PLUS all the resources are kind of helpful (even though if I already knew some them) :)
