What is hardcore thumping trance? Check out Lane 8s album, Little By Little. Might be the chill sound you want.

Also if you like mainstream music maybe Illenium

I think they're referring to Big Room all the way to Trance i.e., high energy genres. You can tell because he/she said, "more of the chill, rhythmic, and beat driven EDM." I'm assuming genres that don't focus on drops and climaxes.

I guess, but trance doesn't always fall under that. And if he's looking for rhythmic melodies, well, it doesn't get any better than trance. But I think Lane 8 is perfect for them then. Anybody on the Anjunadeep label as well like Spencer Brown.

Speaking of EDM, does anyone think the genre has fallen in popularity the past years? I just don't see acts like Skrillex in the main music headlines anymore. Ever since Avicii passed it feels like the genre has mellowed a bit? Just my take from someone thats not super vested in to the genre, but still loves it a ton.

He's headlining Decadence AZ. So not sure how well that argument holds up. But ever since 2013 people have been saying that the EDM bubble's burst. I think if you're comparing it to a time when Skrillex was headlining every festival then no, it's not as popular, but it's still pretty big. I think something like 70,000 people attended HARD summer this year, and EDC still pulls 400,000 people for the weekend.

EDM's bubble hasn't burst regardless of what Pitchfork writers seem to want to say over and over again. This is exactly why I get upset when people try and separate EDM from techno/trance/traditional genres. It's all electronic dance music. It's the same shit that happened in the 90's with "intelligent dance music." Stop making it two things. It's so dumb that there are 3 difference electronic music threads on this site.

I mean even people in EDM threads have told me "it's a totally different genre." So fucking dumb. I get wanting to separate stuff that really isn't dance music like Autechre or Aphex Twin but when you're trying to separate Calvin Harris from Claude Vonstroke because you don't like Rihanna or because Calvin Harris spins records in Vegas then you are losing the point.

I guess the main reason people do that is because if you're only ever listening to commercial 3 min 30 second long EDM radio edit pop songs then you really don't have a clue about EDM. Basically you're just someone who likes pop music. Nothing wrong with that. But like... If you can't enjoy a nice trance track or some hardstyle or drum & bass or dubstep etc... It doesn't even have to be all of the genres, but a few at least... If you can't even enjoy that then don't bother calling yourself someone who likes EDM.

The same goes for artists too... If your latest album is full of a features, guest appereances and remixes and no tracks that only have you as an artist in the metadata and all of them are radio friendly tracks then you're just a fucking pop artist. I don't care if your music is influenced by some EDM if it sounds like random pop music anyway. So Calvin Harris... yeah no...

I think the issue is that EDM just means "Mainstage EDM Pop shit" to a lot of people. I prefer just calling everything electronic music since not all of it is made for dancing

Yeah "EDM" has negative connotations to a lot of people. I think they associate it with Brostep and Big Room and just assume that everything falls under that banner. That's why people get pissed if you call Techno "EDM".

I don't know if you're understanding my point. EDM is used as a bad word. I love Autechre and Aphex Twin and Darkside or whatever else you might split off but a lot of that music clearly has a different purpose than John Digweed. There's a reason you don't see a ton of that stuff posted in this specific thread, which I understand, but clearly a lot of people here also listen to that stuff. I don't get the point of having 3 separate threads when the lines are blurred more than ever these days.

That's because the genres are incredibly diverse but if you look back at how they were developed then their roots come down to techno at some point.

I only see 2 and one of them is dead. What's the 3rd one?

Anyway the reason for separation is because some people don't want to be associated with the super commercialized stuff which I can understand because a 10 minute techno track is different to a Harris/Rihanna collab. I don't think Rihanna has ever listened to a techno track in her entire life and so who am I to tell people they don't want to be associated with it?

I personally like a lot of commercial tracks but for me to take you seriously as an artist of electronic music you have to prove yourself. There are a lot of artists who bridge the gap between the two like Mike Candys for example and I hate how they get shit on for "selling out" even though they introduce lots of people to electronic music while Rihanna does nothing.

There was like one that was electronic music. That was where I posted "hey new Matthew Dear." He was the first guy I thought bridged minimal techno with pop music that Ioved. And he full on turned weirdo pop/rock with his main releases and went full on noisy techno with his Audion shit. I think that's what made me think about how silly it was. Sure those are the kind of guys that get separated at Coachella with Yuma and Sahara but I personally spend tons of time at both. I subscribe to the resident advisor podcast but I really felt like the Calvin Harris album was one of the best albums of the year. The labels that I've always gravitated to were the ones that bridged the gap like Warp and Ghostly International. I really don't get why people still think Rihanna is not down. The new Cat Power has one cover song and it's a Rihanna song. I have no problem with people having preferences but I see less and less reason to really care. It goes against everything that traditional rave values seem to preach.

Anyone going to ADE this week? I'm going tonight and saturday. For the people who may not go but still want to hear it, there's a Dutch radiochannel that has a 75-hour(!) mix marathon with a lot of great names that are performing in Amsterdam this week. It start today at 16:00 and ends saturdaynight at 0:00 so it's a lot to listen to.

If you're interested there's a timetable here and you can listen to the mixmarathon here as well, it's supposed to work all over the word :)

Have fun guys!

Still undecided on Rufus/Lane 8 show. Part of me just doesn't think it's a good idea to drive 2 hours to do a show in the middle of the week. Part of me also wants to stop being a bitch and start going to more shows during the year.

Lane 8 is dope live. Aren't u in socal? Where is that show?

Anyone see the odesza destination festival in Mexico? I'm thinking of going to it

I'm in norcal lol. It's in S.F. on a work day so it'd be sorta crazy to drive in S.F. have to park, roll balls, and then drive back home and sleep like 4 hours and have to go into work. I saw Lane 8 at Life is Beautiful and he really blew my mind. I had listened to mixes and his essential mix and knew he was dope but the people I was with were doubtful. We all left believers.

I saw the all inclusive mexico thing. My friend in Tiajuana said that the resort and location is probably nicest in all of mexico so the money is probably worth it if you can find another person to split a room with you. It's not as bad if in a group. Certainly not any more than Holy Ship. And I bet it's super relaxing. I think if I flew that far I'd have to make a longer vacation out of it though. The cheapest tickets I saw were about $1400. But you'd still need to fly there which would likely add another $500.
