I don't think there's anywhere for Tennis to go as a video game as I think they've done just about everything they can from a gameplay perspective.

From a viability perspective, no because Tennis is difficult to market and doesn't get the audiences like a football or basketball game would. It travels the world year round and is only in the news when its actually played in the country. Then there are the licenses for players and tournaments that make it difficult to negotiate.

VT1 and 2 were great though.

Any chance of getting the original Virtua Tennis as a Sega Ages release? It's still my favorite tennis game ever.

Virtua Tennis, Beach Spikers, Virtua Fighter & Out Run... Fantastic series that need a new entry or at least current gen ports... : /

Virtua tennis was a great game. It looked really good in the arcade back in the day.
I still remember my friend who was not even a gamer being addicted to that cabinet during our holiday.

I would definitely buy a 5th version. Imagine it in 4k on a big screen.

The 2 tennis games that came out this year are horrific.

Virtua Tennis was the best tennis game since NES Tennis. I have the Vita version but it's not quite the same thing.
Why's that? Been thinking about picking it up.

Hot Shots Tennis was also fun, wish that would come back.
Still playing it on my Vita
Me too.
I put a lot of time into the career mode on the Vita version (VT4).

And I don't even care about tennis, it was just a good game.
Agree. This or Top Spin.

Last I played was on PS Vita also.
I would definitely be into a new Virtua Tennis, the one on Vita was great.
Yup. The last one I played was the Vita one and it was fantastic. Would absolutely love another VT.

And whilst we are here, SEGA, Virtua Fighter 6 would be welcome too ;)
My first exposure to this series was 4 on Vita which I loved (before that I was a Smash Court Tennis kinda guy) so yeah, I'd definitely be down for more.

Can't see much of a market existing for tennis games at the moment though.

It makes me so sad that VT4 isn't on the PS Store for Vita (maybe just a NA thing?)... oh well back to Hot Shots Tennis I go for more 5-set exhibition matches against Suzuki

I would love more Virtua anything, Tennis was definitely a high class title in the series. IIRC, Sega Superstars Tennis started out at Sumo Digital as a Virtua Tennis game for the Wii up until a Sonic character model was added.

love VT and VR but i don't want VTVR at all. the core insight and fundamental genius of virtua tennis is that tennis games are infinitely more fun and competitive when you mostly take shot timing out of the equation.

A bit of a forgotten game at this point considering it's age, but SEGA Superstars Tennis is a great little game based on Virtua Tennis. Great minigames and a really challenging campaign mode.

I was hoping by now we would get a followup to SEGA Superstars Tennis but I am certain all of the racing titles sell better. Hopefully if Sumo Digital ever makes a new one it is not like 80% Sonic Team stuff again too.

So? Most people just want another one, not some revolutionary experience of some kind. And they probably have tons of ideas for minigames they never implemented yet.

The game has been delisted from all digital storefronts. It should be fairly cheap and easy to find physically though.

I broke my Vita due to the extreme rage Virtua Tennis caused in online matches. Never played online again ever since.

Virtua Tennis 2 for Dreamcast was a blast, absolutely amazing! I also loved the Vita game.

Like 13 years ago I used to do a LAN party for the first Virtua Tennis game on PC. After that, we would get people to come to my house just to play VT2 with four controllers on the Dreamcast. Good times.

I think I own all versions of Virtua Tennis (including the PSP one). Years later, I still think this is the ultimate party game that is just casual enough to be easy to pick up with a gentle learning curve for those who want to dominate the sets.

The biggest hurdle preventing a return is that the licenses for the players aren't cheap (and you can say, hey, I'd play with generic mooks, but the real players have always been part of the selling point of the game) and to add to that, very few people these days would buy an arcade sports game. It's sadly a market that has been on the decline for years.

Wow. I think you got some issues to sort out, man. Any competitive experience can get frustrating but enough to make you throw an expensive gadget at a wall?

Good call - I think it's likely. They already announced Virtua Racing, so I wouldn't be surprised if they keep bringing more Virtua series games if the Ages series does well.

Haha wow, people read whatever they want these days. Where did you read the words "throw" and "wall", if I may ask? I have never throwed my Vita (nor PS controllers).

Tennis games have a huge advantage over soccer/basketball though.

They're mostly pick 'n play, you can have fun with little to no knowledge.

'Most people' doesn't equate to a big enough market for developers to care. That's why we're always seeing B tier developers with tennis games.

Anyways I guess you could say I'm a jaded videogame tennis fan, because they're getting a bit samey for me.

I do want to try out Tennis Elbow, but I've been waiting on the new one but the dev has gone dark and the previous version is 2013. I'll try out Tennis World Tour when they inevitably give it away on humble.

Also football and basketball games are not that hard to play!

How would there be a market for tennis games when two of them released in 2018 just were so bad that the market can simply not be there...

Back to Tennis Elbow then.

Agreed, nothing has come close to the feel of the Virtua Tennis series for me. I'm not a tennis fan, and I don't even know what pushed me to start buying them on Dreamcast, but I'm glad I did. Virtua Tennis 4 is tied to Games For Windows Live on steam, but thankfully there is a workaround that will allow you play it. Unfortunately it was delisted quite some time ago so that only matters if you already own it.

I felt the original Virtua Tennis on DC was like a spiritual successor to Super Tennis on the SNES.

Good times.

Can't you just grab a physical copy? But yeah, it's been delisted in digital stores for both regions.

The port was also done brilliantly. One of the best ports Vita got.

Yep, it looks gorgeous and plays so smoothly too.

It really is time for Virtua Tennis 5.

Also OutRun 3, Sega Rally 4, Virtua Fighter 6, Beach Spikers 2, Super Monkey Ball 3 and Cosmic Smash 2.

How does having a market release to 2 budgeted tennis games being released........just an FYI, one of those said bad games sold 500K at launch( not including physical copies, switch sales and next to no promo outside of Europe). So if anything there IS a market, but the consumers have standards and won't be fooled by garbage.

Tennis licenses nowadays are too expensive for the potential buyers they have.

(And Mario Tennis Aces is great)

I enjoyed Virtua Tennis but it's hard for me to think positively of any racket sport game now that we have VR versions. Can't compare.

They are no more expensive now than before....heck 2 BUDGET games last year got 30 licensed professional, and a several of the Grand Slam arenas for their titles.

And how much budget was left to make the games?

Enough to put them out. One of the games came from a team with ZERO tennis experience, and it showed. the other project came from a team who's publisher rushed them to release to meet a deadline( that's the game that sold 500K at launch).

So the clear take away-

*There's a market
*There's potential for strong revenue
*Licensing isn't as big a holdout as it seems- just imagine what a company WITH a budget could manage

Yeah, Sega has a lot of great sports IPs that could make a comeback. Sure Virtua Tennis would be a highlight.

I mean I don't even care for real players, just scan CS2 own devs and make Virtua Tennis 5 with a great World Tour Mode!!

Make some Sega legends as Suzuki and Nagoshi DLC and we are set

I was just this afternoon playing Virtua Tennis 2 on PS2 and gameplay wise it still holds up great. I'd love to see it come back. along with just about every other Virtua game

Good memories of playing Virtua Tennis in an arcade during a holiday in France. Would play a match almost every evening.

Come back Virtua Tennis :(
