The people up where I live (out in the sticks in Fukushima Prefecture) adore me, and I love 'em right back.

I might get looked at funny every now and then by someone who doesn't expect to see a foreigner out in their neck of the woods but I've never once felt discriminated against or in danger. Usually it's the other way around and people go out of their way to help me if I'm struggling with the language.

Japan
People will throw out a lot of things like "Look at Japan being xenophobic as usual" but the exact same thing (but worse) happens in the US and other countries. Anti-immigrant sentiment is pretty widespread now.

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but doesn't Japan have a bunch of business's that have "no whites allowed" signs up? Correct me if I'm wrong pls.

There is definitely not "a bunch" and I've definitely not seen them personally, but the few I've seen pictures of are definitely not some wholesome mom and pop shop or national chain store. Can basically guarantee you, all the places with these signs either A) Had some foreigner come in and act like an asshole, or B and this is probably the real reason) Is up to some shady or illegal shit. Like that infamous site that "documented" the places with signs on it essentially all of them were creepy hole in the wall places.

It does seem somewhat appealing to high skilled workers but why would they want to work in a country like Japan that overworks everyone when they will probably have much better hours and benefits in many other countries?

This is part of the problem now. They want almost elusively high skilled workers, but like you said, why would they come and give up so much. Not enough of these companies want to train foreign workers sadly. A lot of companies here hire right out of college (related field or not) and mold them from there into what they need. If they hire anyone outside this time its usually a specific skill set.
----

anyway glad to see so many counter protesters. It really showed how pathetic and weak some of these groups are. Sadly most people can't be assed to get out and protest due to massive commitments to work here.

This fall I went to Japan again, the fourth time now. The experience is just getting better each time, mostly because I'm getting more and more accustomed to the way of doing things in Japan and my language skills are getting better.

Like in every country, you need to find people who are simila minded (cosmopolitan, open minded etc.), then it's great to spend time with Japanese people.

Okay White People are bad... what about Black folks? They're cool, and how about them Indians? You guys like curry?

EDIT:

But seriously, it's good their government is actually tackling this problem.
It's odd to think of Japan having racists simply because they haven't had experience with foreigners or immigration in the first place

Despite the current shitty political rheotoric, the US has the largest foreign born population in the world. And immigration polls lower in Japan than the US even with the current worker shortage:

This is what I see in some Korean places. Although I did have a couple bars deny me in Busan even though they were definitely open and were serving people, other places that denied anyone but Koreans or Asians were in some low key business that wasnt legal. I know the few I've seen were brothels or some type of strip club.

I never seen a "NO WHITES" sign here and people that visited Japan said they never dealt with places denying services because of color/nationality. Only stares and mild casual racism.

Moved to Tokyo two months ago and haven't experienced anything close to racism against me. I'm a Slavic dude with Canadian citizenship. The people are too nice, bending over backwards to help and understand me.

Granted I am in Shinjuku and they're used to tourists here so can't comment much on how life is the further you get from here.

Far right parties have little support in Japan? Nippon Kaigi isn't your run of the mill conservative group.

I don't think this news is just about white guys. People here make it too much about themselves.

I have been here 3 years now as a brown person and I haven't really experience too much. Honestly, I love working here despite the long hours at times.

Well, duh. They're supposed to hate us blacks and browns. But hate whites? Holy shit get the ambassador on the phone ASAP!
They'll be in the consulate bitching and moaning the minute they hear "gaijin" in a dismissive tone.

Meanwhile I have my brother in country to visit for a week and they ask him to sign basketballs everywhere we go because they think his ass is in the NBA.

So, you want to leave one country that has people protesting against immigration for another country that has people protesting over immigration?

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but doesn't Japan have a bunch of business's that have "no whites allowed" signs up? Correct me if I'm wrong pls.
I think you are thinking of a very specific case that targetted Russians in a Hokkaido bathhouse. Otherwise, I don't know why 'white people' would be singled out.

I just came back from traveling 45 days in Japan, in both Honshu and Hokkaido. I didn't once encounter racism, not even in the slightest. So that lame protest doesn't reflect the country AT ALL
I felt like a lot of people were actually nicer to me than to local people, maybe because of the language barrier.

I mean that racism is bred when you have a significant minority population
Japan barely has any. Of course they can be racist but there's no systematic racism like you would see in the US

You can't really oppress a minority if they're not even there.
That said yes, Japan has always made foreigners feel somewhat unwelcome.
Koreans & Chinese folks aren't a different race.

What's very surprising to me is that many expats in Japan seem to adopt a similar xenophobic attitude. It's a "fuck you got mine" type of thing. Along with that, you'll find racist white expats that think only they should be allowed. You also have people sticking up their nose at other foreigners saying they're more cultured because they've been there longer... It's truly a bizarre thing.

This is just a type of immigrant in general. Definitely not unique to white people in Japan.

True, but Japan in particular seems to attract a certain type that is very invested in the idea of being there. It's the snobby immigrant thing combined with being an elitist nerd. Of course, not everyone is like that. The expats on this forum, for example, seem to be kind people. Places like Reddit are a different story though...
