I've read several volumes of Black Clover and enjoy it. I bought into the hype and snagged Academia. I've onky read the first chapter, and it seems like the same "dude surrounded by everyone with magic, but has no powers of his own and is mocked" story.

I don't usually look for a reason to not read manga, but since I'm already reading the same plot, I'm hesitant. Thoughts?

Well My Hero Academia did it before Black Clover lol. Just read the next few chapters, it's not the same plot at all. It's about the main character learning to control the power he is given.

Well they both have similar premises but they tackle that "severe underdog" thing in a pretty different manner so I'd recommend checking out MHA too. I find it fun to compare how they both address that element and the differences become clear by the end of the first chapter of MHA (the protagonists aren't exactly the same type of "underdog" and "different" relative to their worlds and also the way in which they manage to compete is very different).

Unfortunately, Horikoshi couldnt commit and ditched going the whole nine yards. Its honestly the 2nd reason for what makes BLack Clover so refreshing and unique, and probably why the idea of Quirkless Deku is such a powerful storytelling mechanism among the fandom.

"Couldn't commit" is code for wasn't planned to happen once the run started. Also DTL, does your phone autocorrect Black Clover to BLack Clover on it's own at this point or do you manually type it like that each time?

I don't think anyone ever called Black Clover unique

(I didn't say that's a bad thing Silfer)

Thanks for the comments. I'll keep going.

Speaking of this, what did I miss? The one guy keeps calling him "Deku", but that isn't his name and the story doesn't explain.

Black Clover story isn't remotely similar to MHA outside of the basic premise (and BC is also inferior in every way cough cough) so read away.

It's like that for everything starting with the letters "Bl" lol.
LMAO. I never would've realized. That's genius.

Man, it feels weird to read stuff like this.

As with everything, give it a proper shot to form an appropriate opinion on it. Just the first few chapters compared to an entire series or several chapters of a series is hardly fair. Give it some time and to see what it has to offer beyond the opening moments of the story.

Well, when you are buying as opposed to just reading scans, there is a cost to investing in a new series. When it seemed that it was some sort of "misfit turns hero story" that almost exactly mirrors a series I already read, I was curious if it continued to be the same.

I usually give manga three volumes before forming an opinion, but this just so exactly matched the Black Clover feel.

Ah, fair enough. How many volumes have you read so far and does it still feel that way? I haven't read or watched Black Clover myself, but from what I know of it, it's very different. I'm curious what the similarities are. (if you want to specifically mention spoilers in comparing, I wouldn't mind)

Dammit, it's an honest mistake and it sounds like he's being too rough on himself again.

Real Steal wasn't a great name, so I'm glad to see it changed, but dude needs to be less hard on himself.

(Although frankly either spelling just reminds me of the surprisingly decent robot boxing/father-son-bonding movie with Hugh Jackman).

There's no alliteration there. It's a rhyme, which is... okay, but Steal as a pun doesn't make any sense for the character. Maybe for a thief or someone whose quirk was about stealing things it'd be a good fit, but for Testux2 Real Steel is way better.

In the Shoto flashback last chapter, the way Endeavor is drawn reminds of High End. It would be cool if that was deliberate.

Yup. It's only amusing, but not good at all if taken seriously.

I still like my idea of Real Steal being Tetsutetsu spelling his name wrong and no one correcting him.

Looks like Funimation announced their blurays for January and still no MHA Season 3 Part 1. Part 1 of S2 came out last January. What's the hold up? It's already 100% dubbed, too. :(

Maybe they're just going to combine it all into one season. That would be nice (haha yeah right).

S2 part 1 came out last April, so I expect the same for S3. And the Japanese home release is not even complete yet, so they have to wait after that.
