What should I do to get rid of my Cat?

Keep your cat.
They really don't require a lot of upkeep.
Just feed them and keep their box clean.
Stop thinking of yourself.. You made a commitment when you got your cat!

Take it to a no kill shelter. This isn't hard.

Talk with your parents about the cat first off. I don't think it's my place to lecture someone going through serious depression about no longer being able to care for their pet, but I do think the cat deserves to be able to leave a small room, and I think it's at least worth trying to discuss with them

If you do feel giving the cat to another home is your best option, really just take some time and think about it first, but if necessary first contact anyone you know who may be able to take them in temporarily or permenantly, then use social media, or give them to a non-kill shelter if absolutely necessary

Take him to the Humane Society and let them either find him a home or not. I had to do that with two of my wife's cats. One was urinating on her daughter's possessions out of jealousy and became very spiteful towards her (2 years old). The other was a sweet cat, but my wife found out that her daughter was deathly allergic to cats. People get very worked up over cats here but you have to do what's best for you. Humans come first. Always.

Absolutely. I'm always blown away at reactions like the ones in this thread. I love my cat, but revolving your life around an animal is ludicrous.

I really cannot fathom the logic behind your folks' belief that it's reasonable or humane to keep a cat locked up in your room 24/7. It's not reasonable or humane. Besides which, what parent allows their child to take in a cat but expect it to be confined to their room all the time? Letting the cat roam is an implicit part of the deal. Why would anyone care otherwise? Cats are chill.

If they're not going to budge on this absurd position, I would suggest you do rehome your cat. I think that's the biggest issue beyond your personal inclination to get rid of it.

I volunteer at a no kill shelter. If that is your last hope find one. The cat will find a new home and be loved.

I don't know what the right choices are here, OP. You do seem to be in a difficult situation. I hope that you manage to figure something out that provides your cat the home it deserves and yourself a bit more stability, independence, and happiness.

THEN DONT ADOPT AN ANIMAL. Adopting an animal is like being blood brother, they are family, i would do anything for them.

This situation i would stick with the kitty and support each other and make it work.

Put it out on social media and see if a family member or friend would adopt. Try local FB groups. My town has a fb group just for pet adoption and re-homing.

Honestly OP, dont listen to these people. You did right by the cat by saving it off the street and trying to provide for it. Your heart was in the right place. There are many people, including the ones putting you down, that wouldn't even have done that much. Unfortunately your home life isn't a good fit for the cat. I'd hit up craigslist. There are people out there who want a cat that's neutered, spayed, up to date on shots, etc. You can even meet the people first.

A few years ago I was in a tough spot and had to rehome a dog due to getting laid off, filing bankruptcy and having to move into an apartment. I put my dog on craigslist. I found a family with little kids that came and looked at her. They fell in love. I didn't ask for a rehoming fee like other people. I just wanted to find the dog a good home and I did. If you take your time, you'll be able to find your cat a good home, too.

If you're new to craigslist, make sure you research on how to avoid dangerous situations. Most times there are no problems, but always smart to err on the side of caution.

He's right. You posted a bunch of threads today. Instead of doing that you could've cared for an animal that you adopted to take care of.

One thing i don't like is how the title is worded.
"Getting RID" sounds like you don't give a crap at all about the cat and that its future means jackshit to you.

If you actually like the cat you FIND it a new HOME where it has space and love or at least a roof over its head in a no-kill shelter.
If you can't continue to have the responsibility for another living being than at least make sure it has a future.

But dont word it like you want to throw it just away.

Maybe thats just me though.
My Cats are Family Members and worth to me more than any Human that isn't related or a close friend to me.
I would never "get rid" of my mother or so because that would mean throwing her away.

Look up a local no kill shelter. Contact someone there and talk to them, or just look at the information about surrendering. Then take your cat there.

A lot of cats wind up on the streets every day. Regardless of any opinions I or anyone else may have about your capabilities as an owner, you're doing the right thing in trying to figure out a good route to take instead of throwing your hands in the air and your cat out a car door.

Man, and I say this sincerely, maybe take a break from ERA and Internet in general, until you sort whatever it is you're in right now, OP. It seems unhealthy if the kind of engagement you're soliciting from the Internet provoke these kinds of reactions from you.

I don't get this thread. The crux of the issue is clearly that the cat has to stay in OPs room all day thanks to his parents. Thats not good for the cat. And if he cant change it, its probably healthy for the cat to find a new owner. But yeah give it to someone you trust, not a shelter cause it'll get euthanized

Growing up is dealing with decisions you've made in the past. Getting rid of a cat isn't growing up, it's the exact opposite.

Try and find a home for him, that's the only thing you can do. If he is sent to the shelter he's as good as dead.

It seems like you're not asking for advice but validation, and when you don't get it you flip out at people. You don't want ERA to tell you what to do, you want an echo chamber of people sympathizing with you.

Keeping your cat locked up in a tiny room for its entire life is borderline abusive, especially if it lived outside previously. Though I suppose if it needs you (as in specifically you as a person) to avoid anxiety, separation could possibly traumatize it, at least for a while...
