To be honest I always thought it was a low key release for most of the time? Then again it sells amazingly well in Canada and Nordic countries.

It's interesting to see that that of all the titles that that recent Nielsen poll said people were excited for this holiday season, Spider-Man was the only one to be at 100. I'd imagine Sony will drop the price to $40 around Black Friday. More of those special edition PS4s would sell too.
I'm curious to see how big was Spiderman impact. If not that big, that will be an indication the PS4 is nearing the end of the road ( it could be 3 years... ).
with the software coming up this road will be a highway still for quite a while
Doesn't matter. This is an NPD thread. They don't deal with absolute numbers of games sales anymore, just relative sales. (To the public, anyways)
Spider-Man will outsell all other games in September, no one thinks or expects otherwise.
How much it sold is irrelevant to NPD. And if specific sales numbers are leaked, it will just make Matt upset. So it's pointless and not worth his anguish.
TLOU 2 will sell a lot. But I don't see it pushing that many ps4 slims in late 2019, early 2020.
If casuals haven't found a reason to buy a Ps4 yet after 5 years, it's not TLOu2 that is going to do it lol. It will be the price point of the ps4 if anything.
And Concrete Genie, Days Gone, Death Stranding, Dreams, Ghost of Tsushima, MLB The Show 19, MediEvil Remake and, if it is still in development, Michel Ancel's WiLD.
There's still quite a lot of first party games still to come, which is why I am struggling to see how and why the next PlayStation — let's call it the 'PlayStation 5' — is coming out next year.
I don't agree with this at all. TLOU 2 is going to be massive and there will be a huge marketing campaign around it. It's going to be one of the biggest releases of the PS4's life time. It will definitely push some HW.

Look, GTA V is a perfect example of a HUGE system selling type game, no?
How many ps3/Xbox360's do you think that game sold on its own? Console sales were actually down the NPD month GTA V came out.
It's about a game releasing at the very tail end of a console lifetime than anything.
TLOU and GTAV sold wayyyyy more ps4 hardware than ps3 hardware.
Who cares if it's irrelevant to NPD or if NPD don't give numbers to the public .

I do not worry software wise. But will console sell as much as in the past 2 or 3 years ? I doubt it. So this means decline. Si this means PS5 is coming...
It's last 1-2 years of PS4. And it's still sold at 300$. I don't really think we will see PS4 up YOY WW.

I agree, but the numbers will go down quickly as soon we enter next gen. It's always the case. So If the PS5 and Xbox Next come next year. We will have a drastic decline in sales as it was the case for the 360 and the PS3.

But I think that Sony can somehow soften the drop with cheaper (200$) super slim PS4. We will see
If I remember well, the PS3 price didn't drop that much last gen ( after the 299$ slim I mean ). Not sure you could find 200$ new PS3 after the PS4 and Xbox One launched.
So I think we will see 200$ PS4 for deals. But a 200$ official new price ? I doubt it. I mean, the New 3DS is still selling between 150 and 200$ to this day !
the beautiful thing is that sony could stop selling consoles right now and there would still be no need to start next gen.
profit is made on services and software, and with the current userbase that's sony's gulf stream of steadily incoming beautiful cash.
of course next gen will come, but decline in hardware sales won't make them nightmares.
also: of course they can still lower the price. the ps4 revision model screams for that. they just still don't need to.
PS3 was overengineered disaster when came to hardware and was sold for loss for most of its life. Same is not true for PS4.
I think Sony Philosophy has also changed a bit. They want to earn profit from the get go just like Nintendo. So otherwise i think they can easily drop regular PS4 price but they don't seem to be interested.
Well the thing is they have not needed price cuts as PS4 has continued to sell really well even with highish price point. PS3 needed frequent price cuts to keep it competitive. Looking at their gaming division profits ( breaking all records by big margin) they could easily afford price cuts and still make boatloads of money but there has been no need for that.
I think they will cut price of PS4 the year of PS5 launch(2020? or 2019?) or if there is a big slow down of PS4 sales in 2019 or 2020...
i would have betted for a price drop to welcome RDR2. In fact I expect a price cut for over a year already. I will keep on expecting. Next stop holiday 2018. One day I might be right.
The fact that they have been able to stay at 299 for so long is an under-appreciated part of the sales success of the PS4, it shows that if Xbox was doing better they could have been more aggressive with price earlier to counteract it and keep momentum and mind share on PlayStation, that could be valuable information next generation.
Not dropping it massively when PS5 releases would kill PS4 sells. No one is going to buy a PS4 if PS5 is only $100 more than the slim.

This feels like the end of the gen for me. When you have so many big games that sell all crazy ( Spiderman, Fifa, Odyssey, Horizon, BLOPS 4, etc ) and hardware are not selling that well ; that means we're in decline. At least for the PS4 and the Xbox One ; the Switch is another story, I'll get to it in a minute... Now, NOBODY can convince me the Next Gen is not coming in 2019... It's coming ! Microsoft will confirm that at X0 and Sony by February 2019, in my humble opinion.
For the Switch, it's just poor momentum management by Nintendo. The Switch was red hot last year and - as always - software was driving sales. But software output has been a disappointment on Switch so far in 2018. Not that Switch owners ( and I'm one of them ) haven't any games to play ; but there is NOT a single game released in 2018 that sells console. That's unacceptable ! Especially when you're trying to sell 20 million console a year... Something the PS4 has barely done each year despite an incredible software support. I don't buy anymore Smash and Pokemon can get the job done. Too late. Smash should have come in April/May this year.
Switch isn't surprising. I love the system but in terms of big games not much these past couple months. I've only been using to it to play mk8 and rocket league. Can't wait for smash though!
