The theme for the past week on Reddit was Background ponies week but there were maybe 7 or so posts for it the whole week and none of them were very good so I won't bother to post any here.

Thanksgiving is good for turkey and autumn backgrounds in art. So that Treehugger art was found on a Five Guys board? That milkshake and pony Dash art is cute. Human Dash is alright.

Alright, no more Mono fics? No more Mono fics. (Well there is that alternate account she has for some reason, but I'll hold off on that). These are all the short stories I had bookmarked, and after this, I have longer ones I need to get through. And thanks to the chat, half of those longer ones are Sunset based. I'll probably space those out.

A Familiar Feeling by Poptard - Big Mac brings Sugar Belle to the Apple Farm, but

is

about her similarities to Pear Butter. Found via ED post. Rating: Alright.

There's an unexpectedly large focus on baking, including an extended scene with Mrs. Cake. The stuff with Sugar doing stuff exactly like Pear did, by pure coincidence, was kind of forced. I liked the part where Sugar misreads Applejack's animosity as her having a crush on her. It was kind of weird that the resolution involved Sugar telling the story of how she got to Starlight's Village, to remind Applejack how different she is from her mother, when, you know, Applejack was there when they saved her. It also played up Sugar's similarity in appearance to Pear too much at the end. It's one thing to get, well, a familiar feeling, but I doubt Sugar would think a black and white picture of Pear was a picture of herself. And even if the narration acknowledges this, it is still kind of creepy to have Big Mac talk about their similarities.

Sugar was presented well enough, given how little we've really seen of her, and though I haven't rewatched "Hard to Say Anything" yet, she matches up with my memories of that episode. There were nice moments, but the story pushed Sugar and Pear's similarities a bit too much, especially in the bonus chapter, where Big Mac talks about it.

I Have Many Forms, but This One is Mine by Raugos - Starlight talks to Pharynx after the events of "To Change a Changeling". Found via ED post. Rating: Liked.

This is a pretty simple story that captures Pharynx's personality well. It's a shame that with the show's format, we can't just have characters sit around and talk without it advancing a story of some kind. I would have liked something like this in the actual episode. There is some very light shipping between Pharynx and Starlight, but it works well enough just as them being friendly if you don't like that.

As Horns and Halos Surround You by Norm de Plume - Rarity's shoulder devil is injured, and while she recovers, the shoulder devils of her friends fill in. Inspired by that scene in "The Saddle Row Review" where Pinkie has Rarity's shoulder angel and devil. Found via ED post. Rating: Liked, but weird.

The premise on its own is weird, but it's weirder when it semi-seriously presents this world where shoulder angels and devils are known physical quantities that can be taken to the hospital, have unique relationships with their ponies, and even be killed. It gives special terms for them, YA novel style: they are collectively called observers, the angel is the conscience, and the devil is the temptation. That said, it was pretty sweet seeing how Rarity cared so much for her observers, I liked the scene of her talking with Twilight in the hospital (though Twilight's mention that she got her old temptation killed when she was young, and then it got replaced, raises all sorts of questions), and Rarity getting better insight into her friends through their temptations was nice.

Overall, I do think I enjoyed it, but there are a lot of, "wait, what?" moments.

I decided to write out my thoughts in the chat on the idea of Twilight turning out to have gone on dates before the events of episode 1 of the show, based on what I posted previously in response to a fanfic. The example dialogue I gave follows the same format as previous chat convos, but it's a bit more of a serious idea. Just a bit.

You know, after that post I made yesterday, I do think it would be interesting if the show revealed that Twilight actually did date before the events of the show. And it would cause a fandom freak out. Something like this (a rare non-joke emote conversation)

Well darling, I'm sure you wouldn't understand, since you've never dated.

What? I've dated before!

Yes, but it's not--

Wait, WHAT?! Twilight, explain!

I'd completely forgotten about that. I definitely remember the idea floating around that the MLP fandom might be able fund its own episodes if the show were to end prematurely. Ah, those were the days...

When the actual show is at 169 episodes and shows no sign of stopping, the idea of going to the effort to make unofficial episodes too is suddenly way less appealing.

Hello person who may or may not have posted in the GAF threads but I don't recognize!

Good point on how there's no question about the show lasting, like there was back in the day, which explains why there isn't a fervent desire for fan-made episodes anymore. During season 2 and especially 3 there was a very real possibility of the show ending there. I wonder if that means we will start getting fan-made episodes again once the show is announced to end. That said, we do already get lengthy fan series like Pinkie Tales, but they tend to follow more a slideshow format.

News and art dump (yeah, I basically wait until I'm not double posting and then post everything that has piled up).

Forgot to mention before, but that last Legends of Magic cover?It's from fan artist dSana! Always nice to see fan artists turn pro.

Next in ED's fanfic writer interview series is Justice3442 on how to write a "random" story, and how that doesn't give you license to just write meaningless drivel. He makes some interesting points with how the randomness has to have one foot firmly planted in what's expected of the characters, and how it's good to have one character that acts exactly how they do in the show.

The EQG short "School of Rock" is officially on YouTube. Only a few more months until we get something new.
The song leaked last week, "Equestria Girls Forever" by Angelic, has an official music video now. It's super Disney Channel, with random EQG clips and cutie marks.

That sure is a set of episodes. But it has been a long time since I watched "Games Ponies Play"; most recent show rewatch (still ongoing), I skipped seasons 3 and 4, since I started from season 3 the rewatch before (after season 5 ended). So I have this to look forward to.

This Bleeding Cool News article about a comic store mentions that one of the main reasons it can stay open is actually because of sales of the MLP comics. No matter what forces are driving readers away from Marvel, people are still keeping MLP on their physical comic pull list.

Realized that after going "oh wow this SciSet Diary blog has good art and actually updates near-daily" I should probably actually read it. Here's the chronological sort. The art uses a variety of styles, and generally is pretty nice. It starts out as just random doodles, but it does start having a story. And it's been over a year yet it still updates frequently, which is almost unheard of. It touches on some interesting things, such as how weird it is to be in a relationship where you're constantly jumping through a portal that changes your species, and the two partners are from different sides; and the idea that while SciTwi is very romantically attracted to Sunset, she has zero interest in sex with her, which is something that concerns SciTwi enough that she wonders if there's something wrong with her, and she gets assured by Sunset and others that it's fine. But in the end, this is mainly an art blog with cute/dumb jokes, so those aren't delved into quite as much as I would like. Also, one side ship weird as hell: Principal Cadance and Big Mac?! And their daughter makes frequent appearances so it's right in your face!

New Target commercial with Pinkie. Hmm, they were able to get Tabitha for Rarity last year, but that's definitely not Andrea playing Pinkie. Also, I guess millennial pink is a thing.

We already know Garble and presumably most dragons think less of him simply for hanging out with ponies. I don't believe any dragon has been made aware of Spike's interest in Rarity; I imagine they would have to be weirded out by it. As for me, Spike hadn't even seen any other dragons until "Dragon Quest", so I don't find it weird at all.

Plus, I have a headcanon that the magic Twilight used to hatch Spike actually did make him biologically part pony.

It would shut down pony society. Though I imagine a big issue is that changelings aren't attracted to ponies in that way.

So today, SigmasonicX and I (with a little help from Lupin) decided to create our own MLP story, roleplaying characters as they visit Ponyville's WidgetCon, and thinks start to take a turn for the spooky. Just figured I'd throw out my 2 cents. RPing is something that I would be interested in but the kind of stuff that I've seen so far is a bit more focused on being funny rather then then being a serious attempt at RPing, which is the kind of stuff that I would be more interested in. There's nothing wrong with the stuff you guys like to do but it's not something I would really want to participate in, even if I do find it funny to read.

We went with a freeform format where anyone could jump in and voice any character, but I noticed there was a lot of stepping over each other's lines. Next time, I think we should go a bit more structured, with particular characters assigned to certain people. To handle people jumping in, we'll reassign characters every 30 minutes or so.

Then later, we can figure out if we maybe want to switch from just using the main characters to using original characters.

I think we could be more serious later, but I wanted to make it similar to the existing chats at first. Honestly, I think sticking to the Mane Six and chat emotes is what keeps it comedic. Some day, we could do a no-emote chat or something, maybe using OCs instead of the Mane Six.

Today's stream was more active than last week. "Lesson Zero" was even better than I remembered, but everyone was experiencing big ads issues. I hadn't seen "Games Ponies Play" in a long time and had forgotten a lot of it, including Chickadee having claustrophobia, and the sequence of her running around destroying everything. The cheerleading sequence (see above GIF) and Rainbow crashing into the window are highlights, but everything else wasn't that great, especially when it connects to the super forced conflict and the resolution.

The story of "Magical Mystery Cure" doesn't make much sense, but I'll be damned if the songs aren't great and it isn't emotional. "Top Bolt" was still good, with some nice Twilight moments, and of course, shy pegasus mares remain OP (in terms of cuteness). I still like "Once Upon a Zeppelin" a lot.

Toward the middle of this page, there's an announcement that an older MLP fanfic, The Steadfast Sky, has been converted into a "proper" novel, stripping out the pony stuff.

My old 6-star fic (like, 2011~2012 old) The Steadfast Sky has finally made it into print!

The Steadfast Sky was a tale about Luna, Celestia, and Discord's adventures in their youth. It described how they originally obtained the Elements of Harmony and saved Equestria from the corrupted Shadow Stallion. This book is an expanded retelling of the first arc, where the trio are trapped in a city ruled by the Stallion, and must escape after stealing the Element of Kindness. This book has been rewritten from the ground up into a similar, but separate adventure. I avoided any overt connection to MLP, but anyone familiar with the original work will notice the similarities.

The book follows the lives of four teens as they struggle to live in the enclosed city of Canterbury (now known as Helleborus). Celestia and Luna (now known as Melody and Violet) live in poverty, but after Celestia takes a job as a family spy, they are caught up in the currents of political and social schemes. Discord (now known as Brynth) and an OC, Crusher, live in the underground castle, as part of an elite hunting force called Chimeras (formerly Draconiquis). These Chimeras kidnap people from the streets at night and offer the corpses to the God of Kindness.

Things can only get worse for these teens, as the Chimera's hunts are turning up less and less, and food is slowly becoming harder and harder to come by. A decision is made among the elders; if the situation continues, they will begin culling & selling the meat of their own children. All of Chimera kind is whipped into frenzy from this decision, and many hunters are prepared to do drastic things to stop this from happening.

With the God of Kindness having fallen silent, there is no higher authority available to help these struggling teens. They all have to figure out and conquer these impossible situations on their own.

My main issues are less the emotes and using actual characters and more the general tone of ridiculousness. I'm fine with a bit of silliness, but having it be the general end goal is a bit much for me.

The jokes themselves are hit-or-miss, but aside from Shining's portrayal, I liked all of the characters in this episode. It's especially nice after Fame and Misfortune where all of the randos act like complete jerks for them to be generally well-mannered but not understanding Twilight's feelings since she wasn't explaining them. The moral was handled very well too.

Lena Hall isn't the biggest star they've ever had. Maybe there's a chance, although I honestly don't know where they would really go with her character from here. She's already more or less completed her arc and they already have Sapphire Shores if they need a popular music pony for a plotline. It's my same general feeling about people wanting Moondancer back. She's already completed her arc so I don't know where they would go with her from here, especially since her character is basically just Season 1 Twilight at this point and we already have both actual Twilight and another character that already fills a similar role to Season 1 Twilight in the cast.

EQD is doing a new poll about what people want done with Starlight. Since I figured it's interesting enough here's my thoughts on all of the choices they have for the poll:

Adventure arc Across Equestria with Trixie and Maud Pie
This one is winning but unless it's a one-off episode I don't really want this. I've said it before but I feel like Starlight needs to do more to integrate with the rest of the core cast, and although Season 7 definitely helped in that regard I feel like more still needs to be done, and the idea of sectioning her off from the rest of the cast to help develop a relationship that is already extremely well-established feels wasteful. I'd definitely like to see Trixie and Maud play off of each other but not as a major story arc.

Alicorn
As much as people troll about this, I doubt anyone really wants this to happen. Having her end game just end up being the exact same thing as Twilight would be disappointing by making Twilight's role less special and also end up making the characters feel too similar to each other. Maybe as a show finale or something, but honestly I'd rather that she ended up getting offered the position and then turn it down. It would be a neat shakeup at least.

Become a New Friendship Teach graduated from Twilight
Again I feel like there needs to be more of a differentiation from Twilight so having her end game be the same thing is a bit boring. Additionally even after 2 seasons Starlight is still nowhere close to being a good teacher for this kind of thing and it feels unfitting as she's still trying to figure everything out.

New Castle Archmage (Taking Star Swirl's Place)
This was a path I had actually suggested for her. Now that Starswirl is in the mix he could potentially take her on as a student. I'm hoping for something like this because it would be a good way to have magic play a more significant role in the series, which is something that would be cool by me.

Secretly Still Evil All Along and Gets Revenge!
This would be a fun idea as a one-off episode where Starlight plays a practical joke on the rest of the Mane 6. It'd be a cool way to show off her villain side again while still having her stay good.

As for a serious arc, obviously no.

I've talked about it before but I feel like it's actually a sensible character arc for her and now that the pillars are in modern times and Stygian has always wanted to become one, I feel like there might be an arc where he becomes a pillar, creating a seventh element that Starlight ends up getting. Plus giving Starlight her own element would really cement her as a core member of the main cast rather then some other character that is usurping them[/u]

An alicorn wouldn't be fair to Twilight. While this will be her third season as a good pony, she hasn't had nearly as much screentime as Twilight. Maybe she should complete her apprenticeship and finds a new calling in life somewhere in Ponyville.

Forgot to talk about this before. I'm not necessarily looking for an episode all about her, but something like Sapphire Shore's appearances in the past, like in "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils"... which was in season 4. Probably not the best example, then. She can also appear in a more Applejack-related capacity, for a story not about family or farming.

I've had an idea for a while about a story where Sweetie Belle's voice changes, and she finds she has trouble singing. So she goes on a musical journey where she sings with the various singers they met throughout the show, including Coloratura and Cheese Sandwich, until she regains her confidence in her voice.

As for Moondancer, she can be a side character in a story. I had the idea before of Twilight introducing Sunburst to Moondancer and Starlight getting super jelly, but that more or less already happened in "Uncommon Bond".

I agree that doing anything to make Starlight's development match Twilight's would be a mistake. However, I feel like giving her an Element of Harmony at this point would be the same; what actually is accomplished character-wise by doing that? I prefer her as this side thing to the Elements of Harmony; if you've watched Person of Interest, then it's like that part of the show where Root was working as the Machine's human interface, but not directly with Reese and Finch.

Honestly, I have no idea what to do with Starlight in the future. Affiliating her with Starswirl sounds like the best option out of those presented. Shame for Twilight, but it seems like Starlight has more potential for fun interactions with him than her, since Starlight wouldn't be obligated to be nice.

We saw from season 8 promotional art that there's a house with Starlight's color scheme. It seems like she'll be kicked out of the castle, at least.

Nick Confalone Confirmed for Writing a Few Episodes of Season 8 - He wrote some great episodes, including "Rock Solid Friendship" and "Saddle Row Review", so it's great to hear he's writing more than one.

Next in ED's fanfic writer interview series is Crystal Wishes on the subject of romance, and stories focused on original characters. I hadn't heard of her or her stories, and honestly the fact that they're all about OCs makes me less interested, but I do see a lot of praise of her in the comments.

Remember that Spike in season 7 just means "Triple Threat", and he was by far the worst part of that episode.

Honestly, surprised that with Guitarity and Punkity, Rarity is only in fourth place, and not that far above Rainbow. (Speaking of which, that's two slots for the season 8 character guide) Though I suppose a big part of this is Fluttershy's memorable showings in "Discordant Harmony" and "A Health of Information".

I think he's a neat character idea but he's never really had strong characterization and as I said before, his character varies wildly based on what the episode needs him to act like for the sake of a punchline/the plot. He's been much better from season 6 and beyond but as Sigma said, the only episode he had this season he acted pretty badly in.

I fee like there's a LOT of overlap between people that like Starlight and people that like Rarity and you can only pick one for this poll. Starlight is generally very popular on the EQD polls but it's still surprising that she won by that big a margin. It's not even a case of Season 6 where I would say that most of the Mane 6 had no real standout moments for the season because there were a lot of good appearances by all of the Mane 6 with the exception of Applejack. That being said I imagine that most people that like Starlight in general voted for her here regardless of her performance in the season. And Rock Solid Friendship and Secrets and Pies both didn't make it into the second round for their favorite episode of the season poll so their opinions are a little bit objectively bad.

Whew, that ending message is something else. It shows such a bewildering misunderstanding of Starlight's character and the show's themes as a whole that I don't even know what to start with in terms of addressing it.

The actual animation is alright. The basic premise is that "Starlight's a psycopath" and I didn't find it THAT funny. Other people might though.

Long time lurker on the old site, figured I would finally make an account to join in on communities here I found interesting.

Been following the series since a bit before season 2 started. Got really into it for a time but that sorta tapered off. It is still on my mind a lot but I have a bunch of episodes to catch up with now and a lot of episodes do not do much for me. As a big Applejack fan I feel like the writers sometimes go out of their way to make her look kind of lame or uninteresting next to the rest of the cast and it honestly is really starting to get to me.

I did really enjoy the movie though. Kinda shocked how much screen time Pinkie had but otherwise it felt like the first season again with some extra rad animation!

That was kind of a depressing introduction so to counterbalance that:

Kind of makes sense. I like spike but yeah I he feels like a character that feels... I dunno....troped in? Like they felt like they needed a little brother character, but everyone else here is like... an independent adult it seems, so in most situations all these characters would be living with out siblings. So went with an orphan angle, but then again there's no reason why isn't just living with celestia? Who would make a much better mother figure is actively immortal.

Its weird because they make him a dog in equestria girls, and that's like the one setting where he works as little bro. But fuck you, he's a dog I guess.

I like spike but i'll be one of the first ones to admit he's one of a few characters that I feel like got " troped" in because someone felt like those characters were necessary to this type of show, but in reality the show kinda evolved past it

Being an AJ fan would be pretty rough since I feel like she's rarely given things to do. For what it's worth there's a certain episode in Season 7 that I would HIGHLY recommend checking out, episode 13.

The show in general has evolved into a different kind of thing then it used to be, especially if you're comparing it to season 1. I personally have enjoyed Season 5 and Season 7 the most out of all of them so far but they have a different feel to many of the episodes that were made under Lauren. I've enjoyed them moving on to more complex stories and don't really care for the slapstick that was frequent in the earlier episodes but I understand the appeal. I fell out of the show and the fandom for a couple years after I got burnt out of it, but I returned about a year ago and I've been having a lot of fun with the show again.

Pinkie and Rainbow are the two most popular characters from the show, so I suspect that they had a stronger presence in the movie since they knew kids would like them. The animation was definitely the strongest part of the movie for me. From what we've heard from Hasbro about the movie they've been fairly happy with its performance and are already talking about a second movie, so there's that to look forward to.
