I wonder how everybody is going to react when the final Direct happens, Sakurai announces that the final characters are going to be shown off, and we get a trailer featuring Monita and Chun Li.

There's probably some librarian ghost character in some Nintendo game I haven't heard of.

I bet the insiders have a real version of the banner and just lounge around all day rubbing printouts of it on their nipples while us peasants continue to analyze a well-made fake. :-/

Yay! That's 26 and 27!

I recognized Liar right away since I'm familiar with the Tingle games, but this last one was brutal! I was pretty convinced it was a Luigi's Mansion character at first, but then you said they weren't from there... that really threw me for a loop! I never would have gotten it without the gravity hint.

RE: the background having small changes vs its E3 version, I wouldn't say that necessarily needs explanation. All of the E3 art has received small edits since then, remember? The character portraits, tiny tweaks to lighting, to hair, to contours. Clearly the art from E3 wasn't "final." So the background receiving tweaks between the E3/in-progress version and this final/full-roster version isn't all that shocking.

I feel like if IGN thinks it's real, and they're an actual legitimate publication, then surely they have more access to legitimate sources than random internet "insiders". That's just my take though.

One more tiny thing to consider - I am unsure if this has been discussed before

Considering #TeamFake, how do we justify the discrepancy on this cloud - which appears to extend too far? (watch the comparison gif again)

There is absolutely no reason for the leaker to get it wrong - as it has never been obscured.

Just artifacting?
Luigi would cover up that extrusion. On one of the posters there's a tiny gap between him and that cloud but when filling the gap from Luigi it could have been created by a clone stamp. and it doesn't seem like an artifact.

Whatever the result ends up being, it seems that the leak is providing more discussion for Ultimate that Sakurai or the blog themselves. They definitely messed up the timing of the reveals.

The problem isn't that that the banner is changed. The problem is that the changes tend to be where the characters were usually at and have often taken away details.

So it leads a narrative that the leaker upon not finding a clear banner online took it on his own to redraw the banner with the characters removed and that's why it has been changed.

Not to dunk on IGN, but they had a serial plagiarist as editorial head of their Nintendo arm without even realizing it. They can make mistakes without being aware.

To add on to why IGN is probably the big publication who's take we should not put too much consideration towards is that alot of former IGN employees ended up working at Nintendo and maybe prying for leaks would damage their relationship with Nintendo. Someone already did a good job explaining why IGN would be the most likely to be in the dark

Peer is probably as well connected as anybody with regards to Nintendo stuff. With that said, he might not actively digging for info that is not supposed to be known yet. Some former IGN members now work at Nintendo so there's already a potential conflict of interest and trust there. Plus I don't think IGN is in the business of ruining important contact and relationships with developers and publishers.

I think a site like IGN has more to lose if they themselves leak important information. They are a traditional videogame website. Their primary goal is to put out reviews, previews, and report the basic videogame news. They're not going to have their staff try to dig up the entire Smash roster or sneakly question Nintendo staff to find out the story details of Metroid Prime 4. That would hurt relationships with Nintendo. Plus given their prominence, it might be easier to track down a leaker if they are speaking to IGN.

I wouldn't put too much stock into what they said on the podcast. I'm sure they have heard rumors and heresay but to them it may just be that. Nothing to 100% believe in or dismiss.

While they are a major gaming publication it's more likely they're in the dark in the same way alot of us are. All it says to the leak is that it's really convincing to the layman when you look at the story on it's own.

It's weird to read that knowing that you are number 1 DasVergeben defender.
I don't know where you got that impression. I defend his leaks on Smash as reliable so far -- because they are, and a lot of people are frankly ridiculous about wanting him to be wrong for whatever reason and downplay the fact that he absolutely has been right. I've never been on the train that he can never be wrong about anything though. And at this point I am more on the side of believing this leak than anyone ardently defending Incineroar. Though given that every insider seems to be ardently defending Incineroar, I guess we'll see.

Imran works at Game Informer. Is that not a legitimate publication now?
It definitely is. But IGN would also have very legitimate people they can talk to. It's another case of conflicting information, sure, but this is a big official source standing by it being real. That seems like a big deal, even if there's someone from another one saying it's wrong/incomplete like all the "pure-internet" insiders.

I don't see what that has to do with any sources they may or may not have.

I feel like there's no point putting any actual thought and effort into this 'leak'.

Just wait for the next announcement and it'll either prove it real or fake.

It's possible they're completely in the dark, but based on how people in the industry talk I feel like it's less likely for them to be in the dark than various posters on online message boards who have gained notoriety for leaking things. If anything, the fact that so many former IGN employees go to Nintendo just creates a stronger link. What, you think they just stop talking to their friends and pretend they don't exist? The person who ran this podcast until a few months ago literally just went to Nintendo.

I'm not saying that as a bad thing. It just seems that everytime DasVergeben brought up then you would just pop up and defend him pretty frequently and the fact I haven't really seen anyone defends him as much as you did.

It usually only happens when someone starts down the path of saying every character he has leaked has been some lucky guess and/or was totally predictable. Or when someone tries to bring up the fact that Isabelle is not in fact an echo, even though most people would think she is based on a few seconds of footage and it's a super easy mistake to make that doesn't invalidate how right he has otherwise been.

If he's not completely right then he's not completely right. But it is clear that he has had some pretty damn solid info so far.

Basically I'm just anti-people being obtuse to try to paint this guy a certain way.

10 weeks into the Dojo already. When it was going, it felt like an eternity between each update.
This week I lose it over the nonsense that is zero suit samus

Week 9

July 16

Star Fox: Space Armada

"Though I always chuckle when I hear it because it sounds like my colleague's name, Mr. Amada. "

Probably should've been including the actual songs from the start so these had a companion piece. The clip on the site was 48 seconds long. It's okay. And, apparently, this song was remixed for Corneria last time. How novel, could you imagine remixing the same song again and again like that? Could you just.

Imagine.

July 17

Deoxys

mball03_070717b.jpg

"Hyper Beam is truly awe-inspiring. I'd avoid it at all costs, if I were you. "

If you look at it on the blog this one's a pretty short post with little commentary. Of Brawl's new Pokemon this is pretty solid. To the point, powerful, looks cool. I am so used to Attack Forme Deoxys, the one shown here, that seeing the Normal forme is just weird. He specifies Deoxys' popularity, which is interesting. If Brawl had come out just a little earlier, I wonder if Deoxys might have been the Pokemon pick over someone like Blaziken.

July 18

Samus: Final Smash

samus_070718b.jpg

"Don't fire! Do NOT fire that laser! Why? ...Well, because it really hurts!"

Zero Laser looks so cool and I'm glad it's never been swapped out for anything else. I love how much it's played up as her big trump card, her last resort. Seems antithetical to the concept of a Final Smash and it's not much stronger than other ones and then there's how Zero Suit Samus is presented.

samus_070718e.jpg

"It looks like you can throw the pieces of her suit that end up on the ground.

Hey. Stop that... QUIT IT! I mean it!"

July 19

Zero Suit Samus

zerosuit_samus.jpg

"When Samus destroys her Power Suit, she's left with the Zero Suit. What she's lost in power and weaponry, she makes up for in speed! "

If Final Smashes weren't in the game, do you think Zero Suit Samus would have made it in...? Anyway the concept of ZSS is bizarre to me in the context of Smash. You can only access her in one of three ways: use a Final Smash, input a REALLY right timing smash taunt, or hold C only when selecting a character. All of these cause space suit parts to spawn and she is clearly designed as like...a punsihment? Somehow? The Final Smash is presented as a last resort, her trump card, and now she'll have to deal with being an "underpowered" character. Other transformation characters are (IN THEORY) compliments to each other but not these two.

And the kicker to all this is she's better than Samus could ever dream. On the latest Brawl tier list she's rank 9, Samus is 32. Rest in power suit pieces

July 20

This World…

modea01_070720k.jpg

"When someone...or something...breaks those rules, the world will pay a terrible price... "

SSE's big out of nowhere teaser. To my recollection, there was no thought about a big single player campaign or anything and then BAM. An ominous black post (only one like it on the site!), with screens of weird enemies and dark clouds and the halberd and oh man it was exciting!

Week 10

July 23

Rumble Falls

stage07_070723a.jpg

"You're climbing up, but the water keeps flowing down, down, down. "

Anyway here's the worst stage in the game. The big move towards stage with big changes is pretty obvious here and it's bad. I hate that this was holding all the good music hostage. Also based on Jungle Beat, in theory. Since this & Jungle Hijinx aren't in the game, that means all the DK stages are either the arcade game or Donkey Kong Country.

"Oh, and don't forget to pummel your opponents on the way."

July 24

Yoshi

yoshi.jpg

"Yoshi's back and bursting with personality! "

I've always liked how Yoshi plays in all the games, he's got a great set of moves that feel good to hit with. I had it pointed out to me once that Yoshi has, starting with Brawl, always been the last of the Original 8 to be shown. Last one in Brawl, Last one in Smash 4 to the point people thought he was cut (somehow), last character shown period in the Everyone is Here trailer and currently the last Smash 64 character not on the blog. What's your deal…?

July 25

Skyworld

stage08_070725a.jpg

"From a distance you can see the temple and its surroundings. "

This stage owns. The caves can be annoying but sometimes you just want a bunch of caves and stuff that you can just break apart. It feels great, love spiking people through the clouds, the aesthetics are good. Good stuff!

"Not having a floor does increase the danger factor, though. Why? Because it's a long way down, that's why! "

July 26

Footstool Jump

technique03_070726c.jpg

"And then you jummmmmmmmp! "

This is fun to pull out on accident and see people fall to their deaths, but I'm not sure I've ever done it on purpose. I think competitive types do use it purposely though, so I guess it'll always have its place.

"Using your enemy's spine like a spring to launch you into the air is pretty fun. "

July 27

Knuckle Joe

assist04_070727a.jpg

"When talking about the guaranteed hard hitter of Kirby's world, you've got to say something about his fists! "

I hadn't brought it up until now but was transparency effects not a "thing" in 2007? All the character renders have a baked in background to match the blog post gradient and all the Assist Trophies, Pokemon and Items have a white background. And smash wiki never bothered to just make transparent versions of these renders either. It's weird.

Oh right Knuckle Joe is like cool I guess. Something something sakurai bias.

"He's... He's strong. He's been doing some extreme training, I think. "
