I don't. But as long as his actions as a president ensure that all kinds of people have their rights guaranteed, I really do not care what he does with his personal life.
... Why do you think the guy talking that his own country's dictatorship didn't go far enough in killing people is gonna respect people's rights???

Because one time he gave his word he wouldn't based on vague premises

Clearly he will do this and not any of the other things he said!

The idea that a President will do everything that goes against their personal beliefs for the good of the country is noble....but completely absurd from any logical and historical sense.

Oh he said he wouldn't install a dictatorship even though his only problem with the last dictatorship was it didn't kill enough people?

Oh he's cool.

the fact that some version of this can be copy/pasted as the reason for so many of these elections the past couple years is both terrifying and also kind of insane. It's really beyond me how, as a species, we continue to diagnose the problems around us as being needed to be solved by the worst possible person presented to us as a leader.
The rise of fascism around world seems to indicate that many people are too fucking dumb and bigoted to control their own destinies. People shouldn't be allowed to vote if the result is the subjugation of minorities and the rolling back of progress by tyrranical leaders.

Sadly, denying people the right to vote would fast track us to the same problem by a different route.

I never voted for PT and wouldn't in any other situation. Still, this was the easiest choice I've ever made. Bolsonaro just vomits hate whenever he opens his mouth. Truly disgusting that this thing got elected. I am truly afraid of our future now, especially being the target of his hate speech.

The further I go defending the fact that I think people are overreacting to this news, the further it will look like I'm defending Bolsonaro. In the end: PT still supports some of the worst dictatorship governments in the world (Venezuela, Congo, Nicaragua..), and I never thought that voting Haddad would turn Brazil in a new Venezuela. In the same way, I don't think that Bolsonaro as a president will be much different. Two equally shitty options.

This is so scary.

This wave going through the world right now is going to fuck us up.

Brazil seemingly had no good choices, but course the worst possible here.

Stay strong Brazil.

I should've noticed something after John Oliver's coverage of the Brazilian election got downvote bombed.

I honestly think we will see World War III within our lifetimes.
Might not even be particularly far away. Well, maybe not one war that is directly connected, but various "smaller" wars and civil wars around the same time feels more and more likely.
Certainly the way things are heading at least.

How long does Brazil turns into military dictatorship?? I give 6 months.

As soon as Bolsonaro no longer becomes useful to the military, I'd guess, but I'm only looking at this from an outside perspective. I have Brazilian friends who sadly tell me how much their parents yearn for a return to the junta because they saw it as more "stable" than the ugliness that democracy can be at its worst.

First thing he does to get some international support will be the privatisation of what's left of public Petrobras, which will get him support of the west. No one will care when he does land reform and de facto reinstitution of indentured servitude then.

Also only 5000 shootings by the police will seem like the good old peaceful days.

They were not equally shitty options, and you and everyone else who wants to assuage minorities that the lynchings and beatings already happening against Bolsonaro opponents knows that. Like, y'all know it.
Try to visit a poor area (as in, sertão do nordeste, not some poor area in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro) that's been 14 years under PT control and tell me that that's not equally as tragic. Try to visit a public Hospital where you have dozens of people being treated on the floor because you are way over capacity (I work in a few) and tell me this isn't aequally as tragic. Dont try to tell me that PT is all for human rights when I saw the shit they've done for all this time. In this election we could choose between the hypothetical idea that Bolsonaro would be against minorities (even though the government plans tell another story) or the certainty that the atrocities committed by the PT would continue to take place. It's easy to defend PT when you probably live in a way richer area than me,.

https://www.behindthebastards.com/podcasts/the-non-nazi-bastards-who-helped-hitler-rise-to-power.htm

This is a good podcast that discusses Hitler's rise to power that relies heavily on this book

While he doesn't explicitly say it, the conditions that lead to Hitler's rise to power are disturbingly similar how Trump and other authoritarians have gained power in Democratic nations.

I don't know the Brazilian situation all that well, but for those hoping that Bolosonaro willl be a good little boy and conform to democratic norms and institutions, well, that only works if the person cares about the institution. Bolsonoro does not care.

Please note that I am not comparing Bolsonoro to Hitler. What I am doing is comparing their rises to power through a democratic government and the possible consequences for Brazil.

I'm absolutely devastated by this. It's not unexpected at all but I'm incredibly disappointed and scared right now.

Even writing this post is hard. I'm speechless.

I'm currently on the phone with a black man from Bahria who is fucking terrified of what is to become of him and his quality of life right now because people elected a guy who minorities fear are going to give the already-corrupt police more power to execute without impunity. You want to talk to him about why he's overreacting? PM me your Discord and I'll hook you two up.

Democracy can be such a double edged sword sometimes, especially if the system isn't strong enough to protect shit like this from happening.

Getting real scared for the immediate and distant future of this planet. Seems like we're heading to another massive global conflict like WW3 in the next several decades unless something turns around real quick. Not to mention the impact all this bullshit is gonna have on the environment and climate change. Looks like all those dystopian sci-fi films were right after all.

USA Midterms are on the way and chances are looking better and better for Democrats.

Vote, tell your friends to vote, and keep voting to make things better.
