Aside from marketshare, the sheer mindshare of PS4 is insane.

For a system that IMO has the weakest controller and middling to straight up bad consumer policy (the crossplay debacle and communication surrounding it, that ERA member whose account kept getting stolen, not being able to change usernames until recently, charging $100 for a mini console instead of supporting their existing PlayStation Classics software), people just cannot get enough. The lead is incredible.

PlayStation is synonymous with gaming for just about everyone now.

Really interesting to see if keeps selling well like PS2 did. I'm with a 2020 launch.

The is no need to bring PS5 next year. They still can sell 14-15 million PS4s next year and bring PS5 in 2020.

I think the console will reach 115-120 million range but problably 115mi

All depends on Xbox. Sony won't give Microsoft a year head start again. If the X elongates this generation for Xbox, which I think it will, then there is no need to rush. If Microsoft wants to "win" another generation and does release its next console next year, then Sony shouldn't wait.

For the most part, I agree with this. But. The mistakes made by Microsoft at the start of the gen are commonly cited for the Xbox's slow start and lesser market share.

So either somebody is paying attention somewhere, or those mistakes were even worse than everyone has already said.

Incredible numbers. Here's to 100 million and beyond!

It's great to see Switch selling so well and Xbox One getting huge boosts from the X and Game Pass.

It's a great time to be into games!

I think your ignoring the fact it's a less powerful system that also cost 25% more at launch. People buy what their friends get and the hardcore launch people knew the PS4 was a better value at launch.

Pretty mad how it has outsold the 360 and PS3 already, thought there would be a few headlines or something about that today but seen nothing.

Transcript is out and confirmation of the reduction of promotions for holidays. Not surprising as they have "only" need to sell between 7.5 and 8 million on this quarter to reach their target. I'm expecting promotions close to last year with $199 PS4 on Black Friday and $249 on 1 or 2 weeks in December.

They expect ~ 10.4M sales in the next two quarters, which would put them at ~ 96.5M. I'm expecting the PS5 in H2 2020 with an announcement in H1 2020. ~ 110M around the announcement wouldn't be far-fetched and since all PS home consoles sell for over ten years, the PS4 should be available for at least three additional years after that point. It would need to drop even harder than the PS3 after the PS4 launch to not sell ~ 10M in three years.

I'm not saying it won't happen, I said it myself I expect 120 million lifetime. However, to call it a lock, that's a long shot. Many things can happen in 3 years. If anything last gen showed us how sales of current gen consoles can DRASTICALLY drop when Next Gen is around.

I'm in the team "Next Gen is coming in 2019", so I expect PS4 sales to drop sharply in 2020 and beyond. So reaching 120 million will be even harder. Look how the 3DS is struggling to reach 80 million ( something that looked like "a lock" a while back ).

Not ignoring. I actually straight up forgot about the price difference. Due to mandatory Kinect, right?

So yeah. My bad.

Was it a slow start for Microsoft or just more in line with what we should expect? 360 was a perfect storm releasing 12-18 months earlier, $100+ cheaper, comparable power, many 1st/3rd party exclusives. Even so PS3 still ultimately ended with higher total sales.

I've seen very little to suggest Microsoft are gearing up for another 80m+ generation. The focus seems to be their services and streaming devices. I could well see them releasing another $499+ console for the hardcore. But this will always be a tiny fraction of the overall market.

I agree, lock might have been a bit overexaggerated, but in my opinion it is still hard to see it missing that milestone.

Not a good sources and 99 millions PS4...

I think that report is giving us how many GPUs were purchased by Sony and MS. Sony could be at a total purchased of 99 million GPUs until the end of 2018. That would make sense to me. And then if MS only purchased 36M, they could not be at a higher sold number if they have no GPUs purchased to do so.

It depends on how accurate the estimates are, but I feel it's rather telling.

Why do people keep saying Sony needs to make the PS5 a hybrid console when the PS4 outsells the Switch quarterly despite being older and more expensive
There are a lot of people on Era who love their Switch and that sometimes warps their reality a bit. Switch is great, but Sony's results show they are doing what they should be doing.

That is incredibly impressive considering PS3 never sold that much during its heyday. Kudos to Sony and hopefully this leads to less arrogance on their part when next gen rolls around.

Why does everybody assume the Pro won't stay? I think it makes perfect sense to have a line-up with three consoles. It's the way Apple has done it with the iPhone a long time: keep the 2-year old phone as a 'budget' option, the newest as the high-end option and one in between. Especially with big titles like TLOU pt2 still coming.

You list some super nitpicky issues for most I think.. I mean, listing one user's issues?
Even the bc issue, and the Xplay you list, have largely been non issues for the casual players out there.
The #1 issues listed for PSN usage (name change, external hard drive) have been adressed, and even the Xplay one is being delt with.
Sony might be slow, but they have shown they are listening (and let's not forget they actually were the ones championning Xplay with pc, and still to this day champion actually free F2P with no sub needed).
As far as I'm concerned, the PS network is more reliable than it's ever been in the past, the DS4 is a massive improvement over the DS3 and its features even make it a PC user's choice in many cases, PSVR is great and affordable on what is essentially a $199 machine, and most importantly the games, both 3rd party and exclusives, have been incredible and coming at a steady pace.
5 years in, and I'm playing things like HZD and RDR2 at 1080p30 and loving it.

I honestly think the PS4 is -the- current gaming machine, powerful (for its price), affordable and with a vast and deep library, so the market's choice seems natural to me.
Sony's international support and presence also of course backs those advantages.

Surprising amount of success for a 7.5/10 console with no games.

https://www.polygon.com/a/ps4-review

I guess enough people took their advice to heart: "If you're like, a 1080p person and care about minimal differences no one can really notice, get the PS4 version."

Oh c'mon, they were talking about launch. =P

They even said, "But the PlayStation 4's focus on gaming — and only gaming — is undermined by a distinct lack of compelling software. That failing is sure to improve — better games and more of them will appear on the PlayStation 4 — but right now, this is a game console without a game to recommend it."

On an interesting note, boy, has the PS4's library improved quite a bit from what many gamers were thinking in 2014.

Their level of negativity about the PS4 at launch was similar to the level of negativity about Obama on Fox News at the same time.

Just wait for the PS4 Super Slim- no optcail drive, no Ethernet, etc reducing build cost as much as possible to get it down to like $150. Would be a great digital streaming/indy game box- even after the PS5 launch. Going x86 this gen really helped set them up for long tail support, especially because most smaller AA/Indy games will be cross gen.

This is just crazy. PS4 doing so well that they can reduce their promotion costs.

Seeing all this focus on PS Plus makes me sad. There is no way this online paywall racket is ever going away. Gamers have failed.

Well if this is all there is to complain about then I guess it's no wonder they're so successful.
