Gonna be real, the collector booster seems like a complete rip off. Verses normal boosters, it's only offering 2 foils against 20 commons. I'd rather buy 3 normal packs.

I draft like twice a week. Commons are like kindling to me. I would trade 20 worthless commons from a recent set for any random uncommon from the same set. Guilds of Ravnica doesn't even have any "chase" commons like an Opt or anything to make the common slots worth anything.

Really, that one extra dollar factors much more into my calculations than any number of commons.

20 commons or 2 foil probably commons. I'm floating away on both of these, which is why I don't care for the thing that comes with less actual product. It costs them a barely more than a normal booster to make, why would I want to pay such a huge premium?

I mean, you're basically asking why one piece of cardboard costs more than another piece of cardboard, in which case you should probably already understand the answer if you've been playing this game for any length of time.

One random foil common is worth a ton more than one random common. I mean at least there may be demand for the first.

Ah, but the rub here is that WotC can't pretend like one is more expensive than the other and they know they can't.

No, but they can pretend that 15 of one set of cards is more expensive than 15 of another set of cards. As long as they aren't selling singles, they've proven they can do whatever the heck they want. They change $10 for a pack of a Masters set and then they give away Welcome Decks for free.

Legally, I'm under the impression that they can do whatever they want *as long as theres a game to be played with them* which is why masters are so heavily touted as draftable sets when they're obviously just reprint cash ins. There really isn't a 'game to be played' with collector boosters.

I don't think this is true at all, but even if it is, there's still precedent with stuff like the FTV or Signature Spellbook series.

Some people are getting these in the mail. More information is supposed to come on Monday.

So there are some pictures going around of people getting new and unique frameless reprints because of the Hasbro Toy Shop issues with the GRN Mythic Edition. They're coming in some kind of pack that says "Ultimate Box Topper".

The collector numbers are implying that there are 40 cards in the set. The set symbol looks like an infinity symbol and the abbreviation is "UMA". WoTC posted on Reddit that we're going to get more info about this on Twitch on Monday at 8am Pacific.

My guess is that these are new masterpieces, possibly as individual promos. The collector numbers are too small to be a masters set.

Edit: Beaten.

Seems to me, based on the "Ultimate Box Topper" name, that these are going to be upcoming Buy-a-Box promos. Maybe for a Masters set?

This is EXACTLY what they should have done instead of creating unique promo cards. It incentives you to buy as many boxes as you can afford, it doesn't restrict access to standard legal cards, it allows them to reprint needed cards.
Make a 40 card set, and distirbute them through the year.

Would they really have 40 different BaB promos though? That seems excessively random to the point that you wouldn't want to risk buying a box for them out of fear you'd get one that's not worth much. Could they just be special foils kind of like Expeditions or Inventions? Those had unique numbering. I suppose if they did that, they could also add a random one as a BaB promo to guarantee you get something?

Can we assume this ultimate set is called Ultimate Masters?

This seems likely. Basically a guaranteed Expedition/Invention in each box of a masters set, plus whatever you open in your packs.

If anything, as BaB promos these are almost too good. The average value on these are going to be high, at least as high as stuff like Firesong and Sunspeaker or Impervious Greatwurm. Each card would be in limited quantities and are going to be one of the most expensive versions of their respective cards because of the extended art.

The crazy promos taking EV out of Masters is a very good thing for card prices in a way that helps the game lower older format prices, as opposed to the negative effect it had in Standard.

Agreed. If these sets are meant to be a form of price control, and I believe they are, then have random promos like this is actually fantastic. I really hope they do fetch lands again, as those are still outrageous despite the recent reprint, but that seems unlikely.

The most likely theory right now is that there's a surprise Masters set in December. It's cutting it close for stores to get it, but if it releases end of December, it's entirely possible.

I love these but will not be shelling out cash for them.

Also why with Lavaclaw Reaches, what a joke

Scryfall is updating with them. https://scryfall.com/sets/puma?order=spoiled
Some notable ones:
Ancient Tomb (New Art)
Lili of the Veil
Snapcaster Mage
Demonic Tutor (New Art)
Cavern of Souls
Reanimate (new art)
Engineered Explosives
Life From the Loam
Leovold
Dark Depths

I really hope this is a masters set or buy a box promos, these would be fantastic reprints

So just to be clear, people got these because they tried to order that Mythic Edition of Guilds of Ravnica but they were sold out or something and people got these as a promo? And that these promos will be more widely available in a future product of some sort?

We don't know for sure where they will be available. We will find out Monday morning. But it seems highly likely to be a product. Some had theorized before this that a secret Masters set would launch in December. This seems like soft confirmation of that.

The fact they chose to do the full cycle of worldwake manlands when masterpieces can usually get away with doing one or two cards of a cycle makes me think this is a masters set teaser.

Yeah, I think I'm subscribing to the theory that these are the BaB promos for the next Masters set. All these cards are in the Masters set as regular ole' cards at the Rare or Mythic level and then they decided to put (mostly) the best reprints in this new type of printing and you'll get one of these special Box Toppers randomly when you buy a box. I don't think any of the new artwork is unique to these printings, it's just the only way you can get the extended artwork is through the promo packs.

This would be awfully generous of them, so I suspect this whole thing is a we're sorry for how badly Iconic Masters and Masters 25 were received. They probably won't go back to "Modern" Masters anytime soon but instead aim to hit somewhere in the neighborhood between Eternal Masters and the Modern Masters sets. Oh and the prices aren't changing, still sticking with $10 boosters.

Yeah my guess is they saw an opportunity to hype a set release and say sorry for how shitty the Hasbro site is. Seems to have worked well too as it has been fun seeing the spoilers get posted throughout the day.

Tbh the $10 price point is shitty but if they have quality reprints I doubt there will be much uproar. Hell if the mm17 money cards + anything else was reprinted for like the next 2 masters sets I doubt there'd be much complaining.

Perfect time to reprint fetch lands, those need to be reprinted AMAP.

Fuck it, they should make every rare in the set a land.

Terrain Masters

Honestly I don't expect them to reprint the enemy fetches soon. They're hitting the ally creature lands now because of how much Celestial Colonnade crept up, and I suspect next they're going to hit the ally fastlands next because of Blackcleave Cliffs.
