Did I read the tweet right as in: Nintendo made a short list of possible characters, and now Sakurai and his team get to pick the actual characters (depending on the move sets they can think off)? Or did I missread and did Nintendo actually give them a list of 5 characters.
I still think assist trophies have a chance of becoming full on fighters, especially if the DLC is Nintendo only.

Nintendo ends up choosing anyone that makes it in anyway, what's the big deal?

After Piranha Plant I'm afraid they've opened the floodgates to 3 out of 5 DLC characters being just Goombette, bullet bill, and Bob-omb.

Well, Nintendo did create an ad with Microsoft regarding crossplay, and allowed a Nintendo themed pack-in for Minecraft.
So I don't think this clarification by Sakurai eliminates Banjo & Kazooie from consideration, though Steve might get that spot instead.
It doesn't sound like that at all? It sounds like Nintendo told the Smash team which 5 characters they will include.

Doubt it. Nintendo are likely to not want much backlash over such a move lol.

If we're doing predictions again here let me repost mine. Feeling good about them.
Anyway, now that the tournament is over, I made this in the meantime:
DLC 1: Geno + Forest Maze stage
Don't really need to further explain why. They've already got the rights of that one seeing how he has a multiplayer icon in the game (and probably a spirit as well), he's super popular amongst the smash fanbase and Sakurai already expressed how he wanted him to be playable. The one I'm the most confident about.
DLC2: Elma + Mira stage (background showcase the different regions)
Also a popular choice, she's got a lot of potential for a new moveset and there's only one Xenoblade rep despite being a growing franchise now. I could imagine her using the dual swords she has in Xenoblade 2.
DLC3: Jin Kazama + Tekken Dojo
I wanted to find a Bandai Namco rep since they're the likeliest to have a new one, and while a lot of people are thinking about Lloyd I think that a Tekken representative would be a much bigger deal. He'd essentially be the Ryu of this pack.
DLC4: Bandana Dee + a kirby stage i dunno
I just find it so odd that he's absent from DDD's Final Smash, and he's also a very popular character that has the advantage of benefitting from Sakurai's bias. He has enough moveset potential with him being a lancer + his umbrella.
DLC5: Hero (Dragon Quest III) + Dungeon of Slimes
Dragon Quest is the biggest and most iconic JP franchise not currently representated in Smash and he's much more feasible than someone like Sora. I could see him having alts of DQ1 hero as well. Essentially the Cloud of this pass, the one that's going to sell the most.
3 third parties and 2 first parties.
Puh, this is a tough one - most likely it's a decision made on corporate interests instead of passion.
I don't believe we would have gotten Lucas back, would have gotten a character like Mr Game & Watch, had Captain Falcon or literary dozens of other characters.
No idea who searched the vault though and maybe we are in for a good surprise. I could live with a stack of Goombas as a character, but I wouldn't like to have a roster that's tipping more into the direction of Mario Party, Tennis or Kart where we have a rotating Mario foes roster.
Maybe we'll get characters that coincide with coming games, which would be mostly fine - but I somehow doubt we would get more ambitious fan favourites or 3rd parties. Banjos out now for sure.

Why is everyone saying this increases the chances for a Fire Emblem rep? Not that I don't think we could get one, but are we gonna pretend Sakurai wouldn't have added one himself? lol
damn that would be amazing but seriously, it's not a coincidence that piranha plant is outside of the paid dlc.
Without knowing how big of a shortlist Nintendo gave Sakurai it's impossible to know whether there's any other candidates that he might feel strongly about. Sakurai already thought at first during Smash 4 that Corrin was overkill in terms of FE representation. If Three Houses gets a rep that suggests to me that there weren't many better options.
If Geno's still out of the question, can we at least get the Mii costume back? That way I can just continue to pretend that the star possessed that instead.
My guess is that every Mii Costume from Smash 4 returned. It wouldn't make much sense that Geno's got removed at least, given that his Spirit is in the game.

Seeing how Sakurai added Mii costumes for Xeno lade 2 characters and talks about it. I'm sure it's because that's all there is to it.
Now the question is, what about X...
Interesting that Nintendo is handling the selection this time... Guess it's pretty safe to say we're definitely getting Steve at this point. Ew.

I don't know about that. Kingdom Hearts is a major property with a lot of pull, one with a notable Nintendo history, and I think Nintendo would enjoy the possibility of getting a port of 3 later down the line. Sora is the kind of name that will pull numbers, just like Cloud.
I don't believe Elma has BIG chances but I think Geno is out except if for some reason Nintendo went for the ballot (if geno is high in it).
I see them try to attract new people instead of only some Smash fans (or X fans if Elma is out).

Nintendo can talk to other companies as well. On the contrary I'd say Sora is more likely if Nintendo choses.
When you see how DQ XI was announced on NX I can see discussions with companies quite early 2 years ago.
I think the consensus around the time was that a lot of people didn't vote for geno :(

Frankly, this might be the most vague information on newcomers we've ever gotten from an official source. Nintendo could want anything, from fan favorites, to stars - new or established - of upcoming games, to just huge mass appeal. Or any mix of the above.

This is pretty cool, I geuss a part of it is representation/ royalties.
Can't blame Nintendo for that.
Gotta make up that narrative in your mind so you can complain in advance and blame someone later.
Such pull would have to offset however much royalty money Disney wants. Personally, given the histories of Nintendo and Disney, I think the chances of them coming to an agreement on who gets what percentage of sales from such a thing is a 'when pigs fly' kinda situation.
If anything this boosts a character from Bethesda. They've been so friendly and I can easily see Doom Guy getting in now.
