It has been a year since Guerrilla Games released the expansion to their hit, Horizon Zero Dawn. Releasing in November 7th 2017, The Frozen Wilds added another adventure to Aloy's story.

JJNP6N7.png

The Frozen Wilds is a DLC which takes place before the ending of the game, where events occur in the Banuk land of the Cut, otherwise known as Yellowstone. Within this DLC, Aloy faces new threats and challenges like none before, where she has to aid Werak Chieftain, Aratak, in dealing with the new AI threat Hephaestus that plagues the machines of these lands.

Within the DLC, improvements and additions had been made:
  • New weapons like the Stormslinger and Banuk Powershot Bow.
  • Improved snow deformation technology*
  • Improved facial animations within cutscenes
  • Additional soundtrack and glorious ambient music.
  • New outfits, such as the Banuk Werak Runner.

Seeing as I couldn't find the thread via the search bar, I felt like making the thread myself. I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts and experiences with the expansion. :)

Excellent DLC. I loved the setting and new weapons. I didn't play through until last month and I am still in love with the game and really want that sequel.

Still didnt play it sadly, but I heard it improved every single aspect of the main game, especially sidequests, so I am looking forward to playing it.

Although I much preferred the story of the base game TFW was a great DLC. Was nice to see the technical improvements they made over the space of around half a year. Roll on Horizon 2.

Awesome expansion. Man it some of the best robots in the game. Side missions improved too.

I loved most of what I have played so far. Nearing the end but not finished yet. Horizon is setting itself up to be a major franchise.

You don't miss much, tbh

Just pretty snow

Well the DLC actually does improve aspects of the main games. All the patching and the new mount skills are pretty cool. I'd say the new enemies and what not are actually a pretty decent DLC. Not sure what you were expecting out of the DLC. I haven't really played it much, but I already like the new skills.

It is a must play DLC imo. It really improves on a lot of things and a great story behind it too. I haven't played any of the Witcher 3 expansions, but I heard TFW is comparable to one of those expansions.

Indeed, from improving animations and water to a lot of little things. Best in class UI as well. I really loved all the improvements they made. They even went and redid that horrible cliffside suicide sequence to make it animate better.

The new weapons were cool, especially the ice one. I'll give it that

I remember beating a thunderjaw in the mountain facility area thingy when I last played several months ago but I put it down because it was boring mostly. Cool snowy area but it was just more of the same gameplay really and that was not really exciting considering I was done with HZD many months earlier.

I feel like this: Base game old ones story > DLC old ones story.
DLC tribe story > base game tribe's stories.

That said, Rost is awesome and so is his story.

Played it for the first time just last month and absolutely loved it.

The improvement to the dialogue and cut scenes was very impressive. It looked like what I'd expect from a sequel, but, they went that far ahead just in the DLC.

It's a pretty good addition to the base game. Don't think it's absolutely necessary but it's quality.

Playing it right now, but maybe I'll finish new game+ + ultra hard first then continue the frozen wild content

Wow - what's sad is I bought this DLC at launch and still have not played it, despite loving the original game.

Maybe today's the day!

It was brilliant.. Played it this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. but then HZD is my fave game ever so i suppose they didn't need to do much to convince me.

It was a great addition to the game. I really enjoyed its story, the little improvements over the main game, and most of all its absolutely beautiful winderwonderland. It is imo still the most beautiful and atmospheric open world region I've seen in a video game yet. Yes, that includes RDR2. ;)

I will just advise you that if you want to get all the trophies in The Frozen Wilds, I would not recommend NG+ Ultra Hard since one of the optional trials is just ridiculous (time-constraints). Aside from that, it's still very good on NG+ Ultra Hard. :)

It's so fucking good. But I need to go back and do a NG+ that isn't on Ultra Hard and replay it. Those new machines on Ultra Hard are ridiculous.

I quit the vanilla game about halfway through as the world and progression did little for me. I have been meaning to jump back in and give it another chance though as the combat was solid. Just got tedious fighting the same pockets of monsters over and over every inch of new territory you move through. Heard this DLC turned out well too.

Will need to find time to play it.

Yeah, it was a fantastic addition to an already awesome game. Bring on Horizon 2!

One of the best DLCs on PlayStation, together with The Old Hunters. Man I love The Frozen Wilds. Put another ~30 hours into it to find & get everything. It's beautiful and the sound effects are fantastic!

Too bad it's the only DLC for this amazing game. I hope Sony goes the "Dark Souls" route with its singleplayer 1st party games. Make at least 2 great (big) DLCs/Expansions like Dark Souls does. I want more of these great games :)

Is it worth it for someone who was left cold by the original game? I accidentally platinumed HZD and then after it was over I just shrugged and went on with my life.

If you want more of the main game, but it being even a bit better? Than yes :) It's a great DLC.

I loved the main game and bought this day 1. Still need to play it....don't judge! Will try to sneak this into the lineup during this winter.

Started my first play through of the game last week. 13 hours in after 4 days (a lot for me). Love this game so much right now. The combat is interesting and actually fun to experiment with.

I would actually say anyone who likes the 2 most recent assassins creed games would like this game for a number of reasons. Good combat, awesome graphics and world, an actual coherent and easy to follow story with awesome lore. Just a great game.

Nah, it's good but it won't change your opinion on Horizon, it doesn't really change the game in any meaningful way.

I loved the story of that DLC, which i played very late, since i only got a PS4 for Pops' of War.
I was really surprised in fact that it was a DLC, i discovered that later, because it felt very well integrated with the base game.

Your thread makes me want to play the game once more... if there's a NG+ i may indulge this winter while i wait for Judge Eyes :)

Those improved facial animations were very welcome.

The new weapons... eh. The weapons selection was already needlessly bloated. The new ones felt like more just for the sake of more.

New enemies were a mixed bag. Some had so much HP that killing them felt like killing a brick with sandpaper.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm eager to see it and what HDR looks like on it now that I finally figured out I had to plug my HDMI into a specific port to take advantage of HDR lol. Once I'm done with Red Dead I'll get on this.
