Actually the ways things has worked, Trumps C team right now is worse than the original cabinet.
He was essentially fired. Had he refused he would have been fired
I think reports have said he has a backup to a backup in case Trump tries to cancel the investigation. They do have plans for this outcome.

Fatass can flail all he wants. We have the House, we have subpoena power, and Mueller is accustomed to dealing with people who try to literally kill investigations when they're cornered.

You are right of course. This would be a setback but a very minor one.
Due to FOIA, it would be very improper and illegal to destroy documents.
He'll also likely release things favorable to the administration to muddy the waters for the public around the investigation.
You cannot destroy the knowledge of those documents, or of the people who did the work - so lets say Trump destoys it all, In january Dems hire all those people back, the next investigation wouldn't take very long, they know all the answers and where to find them (and I'm pretty sure they won't actually destroy all the copies of everything..a binder or two or 40 probably have gone to safe places.

It's worth remembering that the Mueller investigation started in May 2017 and has likely found most of what there is to find. So much of what the Trump campaign was doing was shady, mendacious and greedy as all hell but if the US senate doesn't care about anything but their own continued power and control of the WH than that's that.
It's also unlikely that this investigation was going to be the silver bullet Tump haters were hoping for when the Russian collusion investigation started.

Probably enough time to get rid of any evidence that was gathered against him and his family. Hope Mueller has a plan for this.
The Independent Counsel existed because of a law that was passed after Watergate. The law was allowed to expire in 1999. The Special Counsel is a position that can only be appointed by the AG.
