*shrug*

Dunno know how it could offend you unless being a gamer is tied to your identity as closely as your skin color or race. "Gamers were a mistake" is a meme.

Erm, never heard about that meme. For me, a gamer is someone who loves games. I consider myself a gamer, and I'm also a game developer. In my country, a lot of people still consider games as something for children. And there are strong conservative forces that are against things like gaming.

For me, it's a symbol of a whole culture. So yes, since I don't give a fuck about skin color and don't identify by skin or race - being a gamer is more tied to my identity than being "white". Ok? Ok.

Now, not sure if gamer somehow became a derogatory term. So, how do you people who like and play games and enjoy the industry and. culture of games?

Apparently a guy can post a dozen videos where he murders a feminist, edits it and plays up the title and thumbnail of his video to appeal to the worst of the gamergate crowd and it's fine because it's not real misogyny and doesn't promote violence and YouTube shouldn't have actioned his account.

But we can't say 'fuck gamers' because words hurt and it's not kind to generalize.

huh.

In these games you can kill who you want. You have been able to since the first gta.

The end game of the people who are getting worked up about this shit is to limit your choices in these games, limit what you can show to others and for rockstar to sanitise the humour in their games so that certain groups aren't targetted

Saying this as a psychologist (and non native english speaker, sorry):

If you think it is funny: killing a minority; Making Jokes Based on Stereotypes; and joke about their fight for basic human rights

you have a problem

Well I firstly disagree that it's wrong. I secondly still feel like you haven't answered my question. If you're aware that there are multiple possibilities, why do you latch onto just the one?

Gaming subculture has had a long history of sexism, among other forms of bigotry and general toxicity. I don't see an issue with people venting about recurring examples of it.

Humans have a long history of sexism and bigotry. Humans do fucked up things and yes, always stand against that. But not against humanity. Never understood that idea that "gamer" is somehow something bad. Vent against sexists all you like - by all means. As I said, sexists are shit. But gamers come in all kinds, shapes and sizes.

Is this some zeitgeist thing now? Judging entire groups of people? Like, what - because there are slimy rats among gamers we need to vent against every person enjoying games?

I remeber being kind of horrifoed when i was young and just becoming politically involved. But I eventually learned to "laugh them off" like everyone else. That was a mistake. Now, its obviously way out of hand. I've been thinking the last few days about what a popular movement against this coroprate-state-media would look like.
I'm particularly concerned for my best friend. I've seen a massive change in him ever since he started surrounding himself with those talk show hosts. He seems to isolate himself from reality and inundates himself with conspiracy theories.

Not America
ITT: Concern trolling by floating conspiracy theories to defend corporate practices that are in dire need of updating and using it as a marker for "fairness".

Bravo, just bravo. This is the same line of thought process that devalues dignity in favour of maximizing revenue potential and fervently defends status quo as "norm" or "culture" or "market".

These "gamers" by their very actions are "conservatives" and by that virtue are mega trash.

That's cool. Without spoiling anything specific I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the game when it comes to its handling of social issues. I have been and I know others have been as well. This isn't GTA.

Thanks. I never got around to playing GTA V and I will definitely keep my senses open for subtext in RDR2.

I already said this once: "Gamer" has a negative connotation because of long-standing norms within its subculture.

If you don't like it, help make gaming a less shitty subculture for people who want to be part of it.

Humans as a whole are fucking shitty too

I am a human, and I've been gaming since at least 1991. None of this makes me offended when someone says this shit. Why does it bother you so much?

Don't get hung up on it. The meme you responded to comes from "anime was a mistake". I understand that generalizations bother you, but absolutely no one thinks of you as one of those asshats when gamers get criticized. Of course there's plenty of good people in gaming and we want to make gaming welcoming to even more people, we want to gaming to grow. That said, there's plenty of problems too as evident by the subject of this thread. When people are venting and frustrated, they don't always remember/bother to add "some" or "many" in front of the word "gamers". So don't overthink it. You know who you are and you know people aren't attacking you.

This is why I wished people just moved on from your first post. We agree about the thing in the OP, it's stupid and it's disgusting. Yet here we are arguing among ourselves.

How do I enjoy the industry and the culture of games? I don't, nothing makes me less enthusiastic about video games than the industry and the culture around it.

Ok. Not forcing you to enjoy anything. But, honestly, what are you doing on a gaming forum then?

I mean.... wtf? Gaming culture is - like - huge. It's art, and stories, and code, and conventions, and cosplay, and friendships.... I am not blind, there's a ton of garbage out there, but that garbage is everywhere. It's on the streets, it's in politics, it's in holywood, it's in sports.... racism, sexism, nationalism - it's everywhere. So, we're going to let them have gaming, now?

But ok, let's drop it. I'm sure we agree sexism is something really bad. I just don't equal that to gaming.

The gaming industry has belonged to "them" since at least the point where "they" decided to market the NES to boys.

This culture is at a point where it's finally growing beyond this framing. We are in the process of taking it from "them".

It's not the other way around

I honestly don't get it.
No we don't let them have it, we stay and we keep making gaming more welcoming to more people.

enlighten me sokrates
Liking something in a video game is not the same as liking something in real life. It's pretty basic. I will spend hundreds of hours farming in Stardew Valley. Doesn't mean I have a predisposition towards farming in real life. I will shoot characters in games for fun. Doesn't mean I have a predisposition towards shooting people in real life. I could spend a day killing prostitutes in GTA and that doesn't mean in real life I'm secretly a misogynist. I'll hack people's limbs off in games that let me but in real life wouldn't hurt a fly, in fact I'm squeemish at the lightest of injuries.

You just cannot argue that liking to do something in a game means you like (or want) to do it in real life. There HAS to be a distinction between fantasy and reality.

Old place was the only place that didn't bend over and get taken over by GG right away

They've had gaming for a while gamergate was tolerated, catered to and continues to be so.

I feel you. My mother has gotten really into that. If it was just politics... That conversation could be avoided as the old saying goes. Simply avoid religion and politics. The problem is, this sort of indoctrination goes beyond politics. As you pointed out, it leads to isolation, paranoia, Etc.

Yes?

He tweeted to keemstar, this article had nothing to do with that?

YouTube apparently had already planned on reinstating him, this had nothing to do with that,

What you're essentially arguing is never write about misogynists because other misogynists will support him..

How do we have the conversation without talking about specific incidents.

Again writing about a shit heel being a shit heel is not giving him a platform.

Its perfectly fine to write about misogyny . I think helping to accelerating the growth of a misogynists social media presence is unwise.

Personally, it really annoyed me how he uploaded incomplete tracks or simple loops. There's a superior channel for Soulsborne soundtracks here.

Friendship ended with Shirrako

UnreleasedGameMusic is new best friend

Actually, now that I look closer, it seems like UGM removed the original soundtrack playlists for the Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne OSTs and only has the extended (i.e. looped) soundtrack playlists for those games, while Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III have both varieties available (I really recommend his DS3 Full [non-extended] Soundtrack, he did a great job combining the music from the official release with the gamerip since the CD soundtrack is so lacking). Not sure why he decided to do that or if you even care, but at least for Bloodborne, this channel would probably be a better bet.

So you acknowledge that your posts alleging that articles were a major source of signal boosting were bullshit. Got it. kthx.

Major source? I said no such thing.
Source? Undeniably.

I watched it. I think mysogyny is just as dangerous and sickening as i did before I saw it. The only thing that changed... He got a click from me.

Ugh, the tweets and support that dude is getting are seriously disgusting...

So many people offended bc "muh free speech !!" and completely ignoring the point of the initial problem.

I don't even understand the thought process behind "killing a femnist is fun !" Mysoginy at it's finest I guess.

If you're worried about signal boosting you should instead take issue with YT's bullshit algorithm that makes the video pop up if you even so much as watch a trailer or tips video.

you're creating a strawman.

I said: "there's no reason on why you would be interested in content around violence against feminists ('read: women) unless you were predisposed to committing violence against women"

Just like nobody would be interested in playing Red Dead Redemption unless they wanted to emulate being an outlaw cowboy. Because you are dense to context, please understand that a reasonable person would not presume sociopathic tendencies from wanting to play as an 19th century outlaw.

And per your example, you would in fact be pretty fucked up in the head if you spend all day in any of the GTA's killing exclusively prostitutes for no damn reason. Just as if you went around killing exclusively black pedestrians for no damn reason. That's not fucking normal.

If you're on youtube and you are interested in gratifying yourself with content around exclusively harming feminists or women or black people or jewish people or gay people, you're fucked up in the head. You probably have sociopathic tendencies. And you're probably predisposed to violence tendencies against whatever group that you are subjecting yourself for viewing pleasure.

Nobody gives a damn if you shoot the woman in the game during that mission, nobody cares that Rockstar gives you the option to do so. But if you create multiple videos where you go out of your way to kill this NPC in game for no damn reason other than "hey look at me killing this FEMINIST", you are fucked up in the head. If you find yourself browsing YouTube and are interested in consuming content about the aforementioned, you are fucked up in the head.

Fucking hell. At this point, besides a carefully curated selection of content creators I am subscribed to who I can comfortably believe are not scumbags, I'm simply going to have to presume any video games related channel on YouTube I come across could well be manned by some misogynistic, bigoted fuckwit who is either in deep with the alt-right philosophy and/or are happy enough to cater to their crowd anyway for the sake of views and monetisation. And this shit goes beyond video games. There were a few semi-decent videos about space and terraforming planets I looked at from some Irish guy with a cartoon avatar. I didn't immediately catch on to anything wrong until I glanced down at the comments in his Venus colony video and saw an ocean of comments on the lines "we should ship all the SJWs there. They don't react well to pressure, hur hur!" with four-digit upvotes. Turns out this person behind that channel's an alt-right, conspiracy theorist nutjob who believes in the great replacement "theory".

I've been fortunate enough not to have come across this dipshit's channel so far, though I suspect it will be a matter of time. YouTube's algorithms are fucking maddening that I wager they contributed more than anything to the first feminist killing video getting the number of views it has. Of fucking course the tech libertarians in charge would buckle and have him reinstated, as if their TOSs mean one iota anymore, if it ever did mean anything in the first place. Of fucking course the GG crowd will have yet another field day with this, knowing their open, gleeful and unchecked misogyny can continue absolutely unabated and rewarded.

I haven't had much of a chance to properly go through this thread, though I imagine we must have enjoyed a plethora of galaxy brain level posts equating the KKK with suffragettes whose crimes were simply opening their mouths in public places to demand the right to vote.
