What the hell?!

Square Enix is such a baffling comoany.
Yeah. I don't see how this happens this soon after they just opened a whole subsidiary for the guy.

"As Luminous Productions works on new projects, I felt that it was time for me to hand over the torch"
The hell Tabta? If he chose to leave in order to start his own thing how does one leave that quickly when Luminous Production started like barely a year ago with him literally running the company?

I wonder if this means anything for the company as a whole.

I've largely brushed off worries about the VII remake as people being pessimistic but know even I'm loosing confidence.

I just don't understand why? Wasn't the game, in the end, financially successful? Or was it such a mess that 8M(? maybe more? or maybe less? not even sure) + season passes + dlc's couldn't turn it over (financially)?
Very successful, it brought the series back in a big way. They were doing great. This is just, weird.

I'm guessing they're talking about FFXVI or something. They probably canceled it to concentrate on the next major FF numbered title.

Honestly while a lot can be blamed on SE, I think this is firmly on Tabata's shoulders. Doesn't sound like SE had anything to do with it.

Did Tabata leave because of the losses? Was the game too expensive so they cancelled it and thus the major losses generated from the studio? What's going to happen to said studio? So many dam questions!

mainline FF directors in the last decade or so.

Ito - MIA
Matsuno - Got sick, booted, doing freelance stuff.
Toriyama - a mobile game then MIA
Tanaka - Pushed out basically.
Tabata - Quits

Yoshida is still around.

seems like career suicide to be FF director.

Guess this is our Final Fantasy

User Warned: Inflammatory driveby.
Good riddance. This game needs to be forgotten and I'm happy tabata won't be able to attach his garbage to the FF brand name again.

He saved nothing by creating the lowest rated mainline game and an incomplete mess at launch, it just damaged the IP reputation even more also Final Fantasy IP is strong enough to sell these numbers, check the older games.

How many copies sold doesn't mean it's quality game.

While i agree with this, its mean to say....tabata deserves credit for getting the project out, even if it was a shitshow result IMO. Atleast now we can let that shambling zombie of a game die

It is very confusing. Final Fantasy XV was a great game, one of the best selling games in the series, and basically did the impossible.

I guess Tabata wanted to retire early or something.. so weird. Sad day as a fan.

It sold. And it sold a lot. lol. Nothing got damaged by this game it was successful for all it's issues and there are plenty of people that do enjoy the game. It didn't damage the IP. People will turn out for an FF16 if they ever make it.

The game sold and reviewed well get over it already.

You act like it reviewed in the freaking 50's, it's got a meta score of 81.

Many of us were waiting on the complete version when they would eventually finish. This is all up in the air now.

That seems to be part of the problem. S-E needs a good chunk of players to purchase the DLCs as they come out. If everyone is just waiting, then all they see is a lack of interest and this is the end result.

This game should have never gotten so much DLC to begin with .
They should have move on after the first set .

Square Enix was this close to force Tabata to shave his hair and then apologize while crying

The announcement is one thing, but I think the most baffling thing is *how* they announced this.

Who does a live stream for a cancellation!?

This is peak Square Enix indeed, as some already said. God damn, this doesn't make a lick of sense, especially the part about cancelling the future DLC's.

FF's reputation hasn't been worth anything since 12. FF12 launched in 2006. I don't think 15 did anything to the brand that didn't already exist.

It's, uhh, pretty hard to speculate who is to blame for Tabata leaving when we've had zero reports about Tabata's game.

Like, it obviously went badly, but we don't know why and who is to blame.

And then after that, we have the shambling vapor ware that is FF7R. I've lost faith in this company.

THey put it on hold cause Nomura was busy with KH3. Seems pretty clear cut to me although they probably should not have announced it in 2015. This is the sort of thing Guerilla was doing in private for 4 or 5 years for Horizon, except in typical SE fashion they announced the project when they were not ready to start full development thus screwing the fanbase over and over again.

This seems pretty clear he was being fired and SE instead let him announce his departure guess things were going really rough. I'm surprised they pulled the plug this early though as his game wasnt even releasing until next gen
