Holy shit... certainly didn't see that coming. This can't be how he wanted to go out, surely.

I wanted to see what they were gonna do with Luna too. Poor girl can't catch a damn break lol.

Ok I'm gonna be second hand pissed if tabata got flak for FFXV internally but Nomura didn't. Tabata actually delivered a working game. Tabata was robbed.

Damn. Respected the guy for pulling off FFXV but if I'm honest I did not want him directing the next mainline FF. Good luck out there.

Betting there is no new IP from Luminous Productions. They're gonna make a Final Fantasy.

Timeline and this development just makes sense. They literally set up a new company this year. They announced all these plans about completing Final Fantasy XV DLC and then finally moving on to their new IP. Tabata mentioned in some of his interviews that he was keen on developing his own IP and didn't seem like he was keen on making another Final Fantasy game. I believe he even mentions FFXVI in one interview and says someone else will be making it.

Now suddenly they've done a huge about turn. They've cancelled the DLC and are changing direction entirely. Their reason being that they want to divert all resource to their new project in order to get it out even a day sooner. Now it's unlikely the DLC was costing $33 million so they obviously cancelled whatever other stuff they were doing too. That would explain that loss.

I'm betting LP is going to make Final Fantasy. No new IP or anything.

I really doubt he will. The royal edition + all the season pass 1 is a complete package. everything they were doing now was definitely extras. Sucks it isn't happening anymore though.

At this point with this and the FFXV PC support ending, i would not be surprised if all those Switch Final Fantasy ports get canned too. Something really bad went down behind the scenes that's for sure.

Why would those get canceled? Those are safe investments. Those ports are likely relatively low cost compared to the XV DLC episodes and would make them money they apparently need right now.

Sales wise sure can't decide yet but I mean by damged is it's quality, again the sales doesn't mean everyone loves it, there are many many FF fans who were not ok with this game and feel betrayed, it's been going downhill since the release of XIII, if they continue like this next game will get even worse scores, not to mention the absolutely disgusting dlcs practice that they have been doing with this game, I still can't believe many are ok with it.

I like some tabata games but this wasn't a good example of his work, crisis core where he actually shined.
You are wrong, there are always fans that have a favourite and will shit on others but it doesn't mean the series is failing or going downhill. The series is fine and will continue to do well in the future.

... how this is the fault of SE if Tabata resigned from the company? It would be a thing it they fired him but that wasn't what happened.
Huh? I never blamed S-E since we have no idea whether he was fired or he resigned, since we'll likely never know, I was just agreeing that this was crazy news and then pretty much agreed with what you are saying when I pointed out that S-E just gave Tabata a huge position so either S-E wouldn't have done this without reason or Tabata resigned. And you missed my edit where I also mentioned how crazy it is if it was indeed Tabata that chose to leave this soon after being given such a huge position. Either way, definitely crazy news.

I was looking forward to all of those DLC episodes, because they all sounded interesting and would've added a lot to the overall story, I'm sure. Really shocked to hear those announcements, also Tabata leaving. Wishing him all the best. Despite its problems, I enjoyed FF15 a lot. Shame that it ends this way. What a baffling announcement stream.

This seems pretty clear he was being fired and SE instead let him announce his departure guess things were going really rough. I'm surprised they pulled the plug this early though as his game wasnt even releasing until next gen

I bet this is the case. When a fired person said "I'm moving on to do my own thing" more often than not he doesn't really have any plan yet.

This was so shitty, why put out a notice for a "special announcement". That wasn't special that was shitty. I would be fine without Episode Noctis and Luna but I really wanted to see Aranea and Ardyn and give them some backstory. SE really has mismanaged this game so much it's so frustrating as a fan.

For the next game, i hope they make a story that they dont attempt to sell piecemeal cause the base game was pretty incomprehensible. And make a movie before the game comes out just as incomprehensible because they didnt know how to fit the plot threads together. If they take anything from FF15, i hope its that.

Seriously. When these games can run for 100 hours or more, there is no good reason they can't tell a complete, well-written story in the base game. They managed it on older consoles any number of times.

OT: ....what the hell is going on at this goddamn company, man?

They need all the budget to make The Quiet Man 2. Tabata knew, so he sacrificed himself and resigned. The Quiet Man 2 is finally in development.

People are talking about losses, what losses? Did i miss something

His brand new team just had to get a total restructure that cost SE 33 million dollars. That basically sounds like a straight up project cancelation or an entire reboot on whatever progress they made

Tabata stepping down at the exact same time isnt coincidence

Sounds about right. They want to refocus on FF7R and maybe XVI and his new IP got the axe as a result.

WTF. The Kotaku post-mortem on this shit show will be a fascinating read.

Good luck for Kotaku to reach japanese companies.

Jeff Sessions "resigned" today too.

Resigning is often a political move. With the way this is being handled, he was forced to resign.

Sure. Still, if it's what is in theory and it's related to the losses of Luminous, then it makes sense why he had to resign.

So there was announcements and it wasn't just a live stream for the resign. Got it, people were just talking out of their ass.

Fuck this dumbass company and their stupid decisions.

Done with their bullshit. Episode Ardyn will be the last SE game I buy in a LONG time.

It'll take some sort of miraculous force of nature to make the Final Fantasy 7 remake ever come out.

Presumably Episode Ardyn was already far enough along that it's worth more to finish it then cancel it like the rest of the DLC. Tabata resigning is pretty shocking but I have to imagine it's related to the massive loss SE posted.

Director of a mainline Final Fantasy just might be the most cursed job in the industry, lol.

That said, best of luck on whatever he's going to do next. For someone like him building (another) new studio entirely is probably a realistic option.

Lol. What is with this nonsense.

What? Nomura/SE hyped the heck out of versus 13, then ditched the whole project after years when it first got announced. Tabata was given a merely unfinished concept and asked to make a main FF title. He did what he could, the game turned out somewhat decent, not necessarily best ofc. I blame Nomura for the criticism and heat FFXV got

edilt: check reply
How the hell did Nomura ruining anything ?
If anything it's SE that always putting to much on him while also fucking up with staff.
