Out of fucking nowhere.

Had very mixed feelings on Tabata, essentially a positive guy in a very difficult situation. Is a good to great manager, but lacks artistic/director talent. Should have been a FF Series Producer (like Hashimoto) instead of director. FFXV would have been a damn fine game with a Nomura-Tabata joint direction.

Hope he lands somewhere less stressful, and i hope Luminous Studio will not close, clean this mess and deliver on their IP.
Agreed
I think S-E should overcome their loss aversion and just get rid of Luminous engine and concentrate on engines such as UE (see KH3). The whole Luminous thing look like a mess.

Finally! Glad to see Tabata out. And the news of DLCs being cancelled, of course. It's time to stop wasting resources on FFXV & give future FFs back to people with a real artistic vision. Will probably take SE some time to recuperate from all the losses and, I imagine, inevitable reorganisations and reshuffling of resources & ppl, but hopefully there'll be a bit more of the focus in how they handle their big games going forward.

Also, pretty much this.

Its a curse to work on SE created engines for the past 13 years. UE3/4 should have been everything they committed their time to and put all their effort into games. That's what i always thought, no matter how impressive i thought 2012's agni demo was

You know, 33m is a massive loss, i understand ... but i really have to ask how much money Nomura burnt on that whole Versus XIII / XV development and the also long-going KH3 development.

After Tabata stepping in and finally bringing up a game what Nomura seemingly wasn't able to do, i'd say it's a bit ... strange.

Oh well, good luck to him where ever he's going to land.

A damn shame. XV was a mess, but it was a mess I enjoyed.

Though I guess this means I can work on my replay of the game sooner rather than later.

Still, it'll probably be best that we move on from XV. SE have kept very coy about XVI and after the rocky development of the past games I can see why. And Tabata will bounce back. XV was a notable improvement over the clusterfucks that were Type-0 and (from what I've read) The 3rd Birthday, so he might just be better with a new company and IP altogether.

Oh damn this is unexpected.

I hope for the best for Tabata, guy was dealt an unfinished hand and still made the game profitable.

Can't say I saw that coming.
No more FFXV DLC doesn't affect me, since it would take "The combat is finally good" patch at the very least to get me interested in playing it.
However, losing someone that actually gets shit down is a huge deal.

He didn't burn much money with KH3, other than that they had to switch engines after a year.
Everything else is just part of the development of the game.

Its not strange when you realize that Nomura has his hand in pretty much almost every major FF game of the past 25 years and shipped far more games than Tabata has, Versus didn't have nearly as much money invested into it as you'd think prior to it being retooled as FF15, and the Versus/15 situation is not something so simple and black and white or tribal a case of Nomura being incompetent and Tabata being competent.

KH3 for all intents in purposes has had the smoothest development of any major console game SE has had in many years, and they had to switch entire engines partway through on top of that.

This is kinda off topic. So since rest of the dlcs are canceled what would I be missing if bought the ff15 royal edition package that they released earlier this year? I was waiting to get the game when it was fully completed which seems like is the case now

I was actually worried that something amazing would be announced at the event, making it a game I could no longer avoid. That would have been a good thing, but I just don't like the combat system, story, traveling in a car concept.

I don't know if this has been talked about, but I thought that the eurogamer report added some intresting detail.
Eurogamer understands that Tabata was presented with the option to have Luminous Productions turn into one of Square Enix's regular business divisions, a course it now seems set on, or spin it off as his own company with Square Enix investment, though he chose to leave altogether. The departure was confirmed internally towards the end of this summer.

The upcoming dlc isn't important in the grand scheme of things. The entirety of the "story" is the royal edition. The upcoming dlc is a prequel if you like the game enough you could get it if not pass.

Yeah that's cool, but I'm in no rush and I prefer pulling the trigger when everything is in one package

So how much of SE's survival is hinging on Kingdom Hearts now?

Their western teams have been doing pretty decently, so they dont really have much to fear, even if they have to stagger Japanese releases. That's been the case for a long time. SE picking up a western branch is possibly one of the smartest things they ever did.

I mean this Pass comes after a survey they did and people choosing what they wanted next, so people indeed asked for it.

I agree though the management is shit, they were half a year behind schedule, they probably started to waste too much money for SE.
Yes most people wanted to see the story, but as separate DLC? Most people expected it as a free update. I can't imagine many would have actually bought a whole second season pass.

It really feels like FF is beyond saving. I can't see a turn-around for the series. They need to get their shit together. It was my favorite JRPG series :(

Let's hope Kingdom Hearts turns out good and they can keep the quality of the Dragon Quest games high. And more smaller projects like WoFF, Bravel Default and Octopath can't hurt either.

That is upsetting as I was looking forward to that additional episodes and was curious how they were going to handle it. This is a shame how this played out.

Wait, so they were just going to fold it back in again? lol.

So basically they had a livestream to say everything is fucking cancelled? WHAT IS THIS FUCKING MESS? I'm so disappointed guys. They had all the promises for us and now we are only getting Ardyn and the rest are cut. Luna will never be redeemed and we wont get the true ending they were planning. Oh my god, I am done with this fucking game. I had a hell of a time with it but all it is.... is really just a half shell of a masterpiece that was supposed to be complete. You are fucking kidding me that this is the last dlc. All these shitty arse collabs nobody cares about was all they could come up with? God damn.

And yes, I'm mad... before you ask. Thanks for making the game playable at least, Tabata, but your resignation and cancellation of the most desired resolution to the problems of XV is a fucking slap in the face to the fans that followed you.

We've noticed some confusion on the mod note. To clarify, it was referring to trolling, one-liners, and inflammatory drive-bys, which we had been seeing a lot of. Per the FAQ: "No drive-by posting: Do not come into a thread, write something purposefully provocative, and bail out." Actual discussion is still allowed. The mod note in the OP has been updated. Thanks!

To be fair, Tabata leaving as a result of SE cancelling or heavily scaling back his dream project doesn't sound too unlikely. This would have been his first chance to work on a game 100% based on his own ideas and concepts after all, and he seemed quite passionate about it.

Regardless, he seems like a nice guy so i wish him the best.

This really sucks. I really liked Tabata's knack for tragic ends, but especially loved Type-0 and was always hoping for the elusive Type-Next... Not getting Episode Aranea is tragic as well. Urgh. This is going to hang over me and sour my mood for a while. I hope Square knows what they are doing, and also hope that Tabata can land an influential role elsewhere because I really would like to see his style continue.

Sad, but not surprised that we needed a mod edit in the OP to tell people how to behave in this thread. FF's older fans prove themselves to be trashy and bitter even in a topic like this, despite the subject matter. Sheesh.

They really hyped a livestream to finally say "Welp, it's dead" ?! That's a level I never knew someone would reach some day and I'm happy to see it happen :D

Yeah you're right, Tabata probably woke up one morning, got out of bed and decided "fuck it, cancel everything fuck the fans"

Come on, this is hardly the outcome he wanted.

Man.. I really enjoyed XV, even if it had its flaws. It got me excited for the franchise again so I was excited to see what Tabata would do next. Still am. Wish him the best!
